There is no single best controller preset for competitive play across every game. Start with the game’s own default aim, response-curve, and deadzone settings, then change one controller setting at a time and test it in that game. Use the lowest deadzone that avoids unwanted movement, and save separate profiles for titles that need different setups.
Start with a baseline before tuning
Record your current in-game look sensitivity, aim response curve, and deadzone, along with the controller profile in use. Games and controllers may both apply curves or deadzones; changing both at once makes it difficult to identify which adjustment helped. Keep the first changes reversible by saving a baseline profile.
Choose a right-stick curve for the problem you notice
DualSense Edge
In PlayStation Accessories for Windows, the Edge offers six named stick sensitivity curves. Sony describes Default as proportional to stick movement; Quick accelerates registered input as the stick tilts; Precise registers minimum input for more controlled movement; Steady limits response at larger tilt; Dynamic limits response near the endpoints while accelerating in the middle; and Digital approaches maximum input from a slight tilt. These labels describe response shapes, not a guarantee that a curve will improve aim. Compare them in the controller test and in the game itself. See Sony’s Edge settings guide.
Xbox Elite Series 2
Use the Xbox Accessories app’s stick-curve controls as a one-change-at-a-time experiment. Xbox’s launch advice suggests observing whether you “overshoot or stop short when aiming?” and gives Instant as an example for faster movement. That is dated guidance from 2019, not a universal competitive preset; preserve your original profile so you can compare and undo the change. The Xbox launch advice and Elite Series 2 product page describe the available controls.

Set the deadzone as low as stability allows
A stick deadzone is the movement threshold below which input is not registered. Lower it gradually until the game begins to show unwanted movement, then raise it just enough to restore stability. No universal deadzone percentage is established here: stick condition and game behavior matter, so test the setting in the title you play.
If an Elite Series 2 responds inconsistently, Xbox announced thumbstick calibration tools in November 2024. Xbox also cautions that calibration may not fix drift caused by normal wear. Calibration is not a substitute for addressing worn hardware; see the November 2024 Xbox update.

- Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
- Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
Tune trigger travel for the game
For a game where a quick, near-digital fire input is useful, a shorter physical trigger stop can reduce travel. On the DualSense Edge, the medium and short stops disable trigger effects, according to Sony’s PC settings guide. Keep longer travel if trigger effects matter to you or if the game rewards graduated pressure.
The Edge also lets you configure trigger input ranges. Xbox Elite Series 2 has physical hair-trigger locks and trigger controls in the Accessories app. Xbox’s 2019 launch guidance offers a 1–2 trigger-deadzone setting as an example for certain competitive shooters, while noting that games requiring gradual trigger pressure may work better with defaults. Treat that number as a dated, game-specific example—not a setting to copy blindly.

Remap actions only when the new layout feels natural
Rear buttons on the Edge and paddles on the Elite Series 2 can move frequently used actions off the face buttons, reducing the need to lift a thumb from a stick. Choose mappings that your game supports and that you can use comfortably under pressure. Neither manufacturer establishes a universal best mapping. The DualSense Edge product page describes remappable rear buttons; Xbox lists four assignable paddles on the Elite Series 2 product page.
Save game-specific profiles
A curve, deadzone, or trigger setup that suits one game may feel wrong in another. Save a distinct profile for each game or meaningful playstyle rather than trying to make one preset serve every title.
- DualSense Edge: Sony’s Windows guide says the controller can store up to four profiles including the default. Profiles can include stick sensitivity and deadzone, button assignments, and trigger settings. PlayStation Accessories for Windows supports settings and firmware updates. See Sony’s PC guide and PlayStation controller support.
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2: Xbox lists up to three custom profiles plus the default. Its Accessories app supports mapping and profiles on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. See the Xbox product page.

A game-specific example is not a universal preset
PlayStation Blog reported Bungie’s Marathon recommendations on April 28, 2026: Precise on the Edge’s right stick and Quick on the left, along with a medium or short R2 stop and an L2 range of 0–70 for Marathon’s ADS behavior. Those are recommendations for that game, not evidence that the same combination is best for other shooters. Read Bungie’s Marathon recommendations alongside the game’s own controls.
