Do you need a special controller for Phantom Liberty?
No. CD PROJEKT RED’s supported-peripherals list names the DualSense for PS5 and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers for Xbox Series X|S. The expansion does not require a pro controller. Premium models mainly add comfort options and customization; they do not unlock special Cyberpunk features.
The game’s PlayStation Store accessibility listing describes basic remapping and stick-sensitivity options, and says the game can be played without rapid or simultaneous presses, motion or touch controls, vibration, or adaptive-trigger effects. Best controllers for PS5
DualSense Edge: best premium PS5 controller
Choose the DualSense Edge if you specifically want rear buttons and deeper control adjustments while keeping a native PlayStation layout. PlayStation lists remappable buttons, quick-switch profiles, adjustable stick sensitivity and dead zones, adjustable trigger dead zones, interchangeable stick caps, and configurable vibration intensity. It also retains DualSense features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion controls, and a built-in microphone.
Rear buttons can put frequently used existing inputs—such as crouch, dodge, jump, or scanner—within easier reach while your thumbs stay on the sticks. That can help in combat or stealth, but it is a preference, not a guaranteed gameplay advantage. The game’s own remapping is described as basic, so do not assume you can assign every in-game command freely. Edge’s profiles and hardware settings matter most if you expect to tune controls or use different layouts; they are hard to justify if all you need is a replacement pad.

DualSense: best value and default choice
The standard DualSense is the straightforward choice for most PS5 players. CD PROJEKT RED lists it as supported on PS5, and it avoids paying for rear buttons and advanced adjustments you may never use. If your current DualSense is comfortable and working, there is no Cyberpunk-specific reason to upgrade.

Razer Wolverine V3 Pro: best feature-rich Xbox pick

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2: best Xbox-native premium choice

- Rear buttons: Useful if you want to dodge, crouch, jump, or use another frequent input without lifting your right thumb from the camera stick. They usually map existing controller inputs; they do not create new game commands.
- Stick sensitivity and dead zones: Adjustments can help tailor camera movement and aiming to your preference. No controller is universally best for aiming; stick height, tension, sensitivity curve, hand size, and practice all affect feel.
- Hall Effect sticks: An appealing design feature, not an anti-drift guarantee. Do not treat the label as proof of a controller’s overall reliability.
- Trigger locks: Short travel may suit quick weapon inputs. Full travel can be preferable for driving or any action where gradual analog control matters. A mode you can change is more flexible.
- Profiles: Handy if you want separate combat, driving, or stealth layouts. If one layout works for you, profile switching may add little.
- Comfort and reach: For a long RPG, grip, weight, stick placement, button reach, and hand size can matter more than competitive-controller specifications. Where possible, try the shape before spending on a premium model.
- Wireless and setup: First-party controllers offer the simplest console path. Some third-party models use a USB dongle or require an app for firmware, remapping, or sensitivity changes. Check whether setup requires a PC and whether the connection method suits your living-room arrangement.
Control-layout ideas to try
There is no universal best layout, and available assignments depend on the game and controller software. Start with one change at a time, then keep it only if it reduces awkward reaches without creating new problems.
- Combat: Try putting dodge or another frequent action on a rear button so you can maintain camera control.
- Stealth: If crouching often interrupts camera movement, test a rear-button assignment for that existing input.
- Driving: Restore full trigger travel if a trigger lock makes throttle or braking feel too abrupt.
- Accessibility: Move difficult-to-reach inputs to more comfortable buttons where the game or controller allows it. Check the game’s remapping limits before relying on a particular assignment.
Xbox and PlayStation: compatibility matters
Do not assume a controller works across console brands just because it connects to PC or has a similar name. The official Cyberpunk support list covers first-party PlayStation and Xbox controllers on their respective consoles; CD PROJEKT RED says unsupported controllers may require third-party software. That warning is not a guarantee that an adapter will work well. Console compatibility, wireless operation, headset audio, firmware, and remapping can all vary.
On PS5, the DualSense Edge’s native PlayStation shape and features are its main advantage. On Xbox, the Elite’s Xbox Accessories integration is a strong reason to prefer it, while the Wolverine’s USB transmitter and feature set suit a different buyer. For third-party controllers, confirm the precise console version and which functions are supported; licensed status alone does not mean every feature behaves like a first-party pad.
