For smooth RTX 2080 Ti gaming, start with your driver’s defaults, configure settings in the individual game profile, and choose a frame cap the game can hold steadily. There is no universal CPU clock, NVIDIA preset, or FPS cap that suits every system. The right setup depends on the game, processor, resolution, monitor refresh rate, and whether the GPU is the limit.
Start with a reliable baseline
- Confirm the game uses the RTX 2080 Ti. Check the game’s graphics settings or your system’s GPU-selection controls. Also verify that the monitor is connected to the graphics card and configured for its intended refresh rate. NVIDIA’s card guide lists three DisplayPort outputs and HDMI; G-SYNC requires a G-SYNC-ready display. NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 Ti guide.
- Begin with driver defaults. Use NVIDIA Control Panel’s global defaults, then make changes in the game’s application-specific profile rather than applying performance tweaks everywhere. NVIDIA supports both global and per-application profiles. NVIDIA Control Panel guide.
- Set an in-game frame cap the game can sustain. Choose a rate that remains consistent during demanding scenes, not merely one the game reaches in an empty area. If you use a variable refresh rate (VRR) display, use a cap just below its maximum refresh rate as a starting point to stay within the VRR range.
- Change one setting at a time. Play the same demanding section and compare frame-time consistency, latency, image quality, and noise. Revert a change if it makes the experience worse.
For ordinary play, leave power management driver-controlled. NVIDIA describes Prefer maximum performance as keeping the GPU at maximum performance in most 3D applications; that can be worth testing for a latency-focused case, but it is not a guaranteed FPS or smoothness boost. NVIDIA Control Panel reference.
Choose settings for your goal
| Goal | Starting point | Trade-off or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced, normal play | Keep default, driver-controlled power behavior and adjust only relevant options in the game profile. | Fewer global overrides; diagnose a specific symptom before adding performance toggles. NVIDIA Control Panel reference. |
| Lower latency in a GPU-bound game with consistent FPS | Test Prefer maximum performance, cap slightly below the game’s average FPS, and try Low Latency Mode set to Ultra. | This is NVIDIA’s conditional guidance for GPU-bound cases, not a universal smoothness fix. Check results in the specific game. NVIDIA low-latency guidance. |
| VRR/G-SYNC smoothness | Cap slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate. NVIDIA’s documented tear-free setup also uses V-Sync and Ultra Low Latency. | Try the combination rather than treating it as mandatory: results depend on the display, game, driver, and refresh configuration. G-SYNC requires a compatible display. NVIDIA G-SYNC guidance; RTX 2080 Ti guide. |
| Stutter mostly on the first run after a driver update | Give the game time to rebuild shader caches, then see whether later runs improve. | Shader compilation can cause gameplay stutter, and NVIDIA notes that installing a new driver deletes the shader cache. NVIDIA shader compilation explanation. |
| Low FPS while the GPU is not fully loaded | Record the processor, game, resolution, CPU and GPU utilization, and frame-time pattern before changing CPU settings. | Those symptoms alone do not identify a universal CPU fix; diagnosis depends on the specific system and game. |
When to use NVIDIA Low Latency Mode
NVIDIA describes the feature this way: “Low Latency Mode reduces latency by limiting the number of frames the CPU can prepare before the frames are processed by the GPU.” NVIDIA Control Panel reference. Reducing queued frames can help a latency-focused setup, but it is not the same as improving frame-time consistency or increasing FPS.
Use a per-game setting and treat Ultra as a test for a GPU-bound game with reasonably consistent FPS—not a default for every title. NVIDIA’s historical feature guidance focused on GPU-bound DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 games. In DirectX 12 and Vulkan, the game controls when frames are queued, so a driver override may not provide the same behavior. If the game has its own latency control or an override causes problems, leave the driver setting off or application-controlled. NVIDIA low-latency guidance.

Set a cap for the game or the display
If latency is the priority
For a GPU-bound game with consistent performance, NVIDIA’s guidance is to cap slightly below the game’s average FPS, use Prefer maximum performance, and try Ultra Low Latency. This depends on the game actually sustaining the target: a cap set above what demanding scenes can hold will not make those scenes consistent.
If VRR/G-SYNC is the priority
Use the monitor’s configured maximum refresh rate as the reference and start with a cap just below it. NVIDIA recommends this approach to remain within the VRR range and describes a tear-free setup that also enables V-Sync and Ultra Low Latency. Confirm that the monitor supports G-SYNC and that the intended connection and refresh mode are active; exact behavior can vary by hardware, game, and driver. NVIDIA G-SYNC guidance.

When neither target is stable
There is no single FPS number to copy across RTX 2080 Ti systems. Use the game’s own cap or another available frame limiter to find a rate it sustains through demanding play, then judge frame-time behavior as well as the displayed FPS. A cap can reduce CPU or GPU work in some situations, but it cannot be assumed to fix a CPU or game-engine bottleneck.
Diagnose stutter before lowering every setting
Stutter has more than one possible cause. Shader compilation is a documented example: NVIDIA says compiling shaders can interrupt gameplay, and its shader cache stores compiled shaders for reuse. NVIDIA also notes that installing a new driver deletes that cache, so a game may hitch while shaders are rebuilt after an update. If the problem is concentrated in early runs after updating and later runs improve, reducing every graphics setting may not address it. NVIDIA shader compilation explanation.

- Low FPS without high GPU utilization: Gather CPU, game, resolution, utilization, and frame-time information before selecting a CPU adjustment.
Does your CPU bottleneck an RTX 2080 Ti?
Not from the GPU model alone. A CPU bottleneck depends on the processor, game, resolution, settings, and observed utilization and frame times. Low GPU utilization alongside low FPS can be a reason to investigate CPU or game-engine limits, but it does not establish which limit applies or what clock, voltage, core count, or upgrade would solve it.
There is no evidence-backed universal CPU frequency or core configuration for smooth RTX 2080 Ti gaming. Avoid disabling cores or changing voltage on the basis of a generic recommendation; any CPU tuning decision needs the exact processor, motherboard, cooling, memory, game, and measurements. A frame cap may reduce system work in some cases, but it is not a guaranteed remedy for a CPU bottleneck.

Check the card and display connection
If performance or display behavior seems unexpectedly poor, verify the physical setup before tuning. NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 Ti installation guide specifies PCI Express 3.0 x16, a double-wide card, and two 8-pin PCIe power plugs; it recommends the primary PCI Express x16 slot. Check the exact board-partner model for dimensions and power requirements, since designs can differ, and disconnect system power before handling the card. NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti guide.
The reference guide lists three DisplayPort connectors and HDMI. For VRR, verify the monitor is G-SYNC-ready and confirm its connection, refresh rate, and variable-refresh setting; owning an RTX 2080 Ti by itself does not establish that the display is operating in a compatible VRR mode.
