For a new PC built mainly for League of Legends, buy the AMD Ryzen 5 9600. Its six Zen 5 cores, 12 threads, AM5 platform, DDR5 support and 65 W default TDP provide ample headroom without paying for a flagship processor. Choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for competitive 240 Hz-plus play or a broader high-end gaming system. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is the premium option, but it is difficult to justify for LoL alone. Owners of a serviceable AM4 or Intel system should measure their frame-time problem before replacing the platform.

These are buying tiers, not a tested FPS ranking. Current, neutral, directly comparable League of Legends benchmarks were not established in the available evidence, so no responsible recommendation can promise a particular frame rate.
How demanding is League of Legends?
Riot’s current Windows support page, checked August 18, 2026, lists an Intel Core i3-530 or AMD A6-3650 as minimum CPUs and an Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 as recommended CPUs. It lists 1920×1080 as the recommended resolution, DirectX 11-level graphics hardware, and no ARM support. See Riot’s current system requirements.
Riot’s older requirements announcement instead named the Core i5-3300 in its recommended row. That difference reflects changing support documentation and dates, not a precise modern performance scale; the older page is Riot’s earlier announcement. Either way, these are compatibility baselines. They do not guarantee 144 Hz, 240 Hz, stable team-fight frame times or smooth multitasking.

What “best” means in LoL
At low settings and 1080p, the game can become CPU-limited because the graphics card has relatively little work to do. Large fights can expose frame-time spikes even when the average FPS counter looks high. At 1440p or 4K with higher settings, the GPU matters more, although LoL remains light compared with modern AAA games.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
- 60–100 Hz: A recent mainstream CPU is enough; a flagship X3D chip is poor value for LoL alone.
- 120–165 Hz: A modern six-core processor is the balanced choice.
- 240 Hz: A faster six-core or eight-core gaming CPU can provide useful CPU-side headroom at 1080p low settings.
- 360 Hz: Frame-time consistency, memory configuration, GPU drivers, settings and the individual game scene all matter. No processor guarantees 360 FPS in every fight.
Best CPU picks
Best overall: Ryzen 5 9600
The Ryzen 5 9600 is the practical default for a new LoL-focused desktop. AMD specifies six Zen 5 cores, 12 threads, a 3.8 GHz base clock, up to 5.2 GHz boost, 32 MB of L3 cache, a 65 W default TDP, AM5, DDR5 and basic Radeon integrated graphics. Its 65 W rating makes quiet, inexpensive cooling straightforward. Confirm final boxed-cooler details on AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600 page.
It is also a useful troubleshooting CPU because the integrated graphics can produce a display before a discrete GPU is installed or while that GPU is being diagnosed. Integrated graphics performance depends on memory configuration and should not be treated as a guaranteed high-refresh solution.

Value alternative: Ryzen 5 9600X
The 9600X occupies the same six-core AM5 segment with a higher advertised boost potential. Buy it only when the processor and any required cooler together cost little more than a 9600 system. If the price gap funds a better graphics card, monitor or dual-channel memory kit, the 9600 is the better LoL allocation.
Best high-refresh gaming choice: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
The 9800X3D has eight cores, 16 threads, up to 5.2 GHz boost, 104 MB total cache, a 120 W TDP, AM5 and DDR5 support. Its large cache and gaming-oriented design make it a strong candidate when you are targeting 240 Hz or also play demanding games. AMD’s official launch announcement gave it a historical $479 suggested e-tail price in November 2024; that is not an August 2026 retail guarantee. Specifications and launch details are in AMD’s announcement.

For LoL alone, compare the complete LGA1851 cost—CPU, board, cooler, memory and power supply—with a six-core Ryzen 5 build. Intel’s older comparison of the Core i5-12400F and Ryzen 7 8700G reported up to 1.2× higher average FPS for the i5-12400F under its own test conditions. That vendor test is dated and uses different graphics configurations, so it is context rather than a current universal ranking; see Intel’s benchmark page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does 3D V-Cache matter?
AMD lists League of Legends among the games in its desktop processor test suite and markets the 9800X3D and 9850X3D as gaming-focused processors on its desktop Ryzen lineup page. Extra cache may help some CPU-limited workloads, but AMD’s material is vendor testing and the available page does not provide a complete LoL-specific FPS table. Treat X3D as a plausible high-refresh advantage, not a guaranteed percentage improvement.
Platform and cooling decisions
- AM5: The Ryzen 5 9600, 9600X, 9800X3D and 9850X3D use AM5 and DDR5. Include the motherboard and memory in the budget and verify BIOS support.
- AM4: A Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 5 5500 or another compatible Ryzen 5000 chip can be a strong low-cost upgrade when you already own DDR4 and a suitable board. Check the exact BIOS and CPU-support list first.
- Cooling: The 9600’s 65 W default TDP is easy to cool. The 9850X3D is a 120 W part and AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance; do not select an undersized cooler.
- Integrated graphics: The 9600 and 9850X3D can provide emergency display output and basic desktop use. A discrete GPU remains preferable for high-refresh targets and other games.
Diagnosing low FPS and stutter before buying
A faster CPU is not automatically the fix. During a repeatable match or practice scenario, monitor GPU utilization, usage on individual CPU cores, temperatures, clock speeds and frame-time graphs. Also check:
- Dual-channel memory operation and adequate capacity.
- Thermal throttling, laptop performance mode and whether the system is plugged in.
- Browser tabs, recording software, overlays, antivirus scans and other background work.
- BIOS, chipset and graphics drivers, frame caps, V-sync, variable-refresh settings and the monitor’s selected refresh rate.
- Whether the problem is the game client rather than in-game rendering.
- Ping, packet loss and server issues, which a CPU upgrade cannot repair.
Desktop and laptop CPU model names are not directly comparable. Laptop results depend on sustained power limits, cooling, memory, graphics hardware and the manufacturer’s performance mode.
When not to upgrade
If a recent Core i5, Ryzen 5 or equivalent already delivers consistent frame times at your monitor’s refresh rate, replacing it for LoL alone is usually a poor return. First isolate the GPU, RAM, thermals and software configuration. Likewise, do not buy an eight-core X3D processor for a 60 Hz system simply because Riot’s requirements appear low or because a benchmark headline calls it fastest.
Quick Recap
Buying advice by reader type
- New budget desktop: Ryzen 5 9600, AM5 motherboard, dual-channel DDR5 and a suitable GPU.
- New mainstream gaming desktop: Ryzen 5 9600X only if its total cost is close to the 9600; otherwise put the difference into the GPU or display.
- 240 Hz competitive player: Ryzen 7 9800X3D when the rest of the system can sustain the target; use the 9850X3D only for a premium build where value is secondary.
- AM4 owner: Check BIOS compatibility for a Ryzen 5 5600-class or faster Ryzen 5000 upgrade before pricing a complete AM5 replacement.
- Intel owner: Upgrade only after measuring CPU-limited frame-time problems; a platform replacement may cost more than the LoL gain.
- Laptop buyer: Choose the whole laptop’s cooling, power mode, memory and GPU configuration, not a desktop-style CPU model comparison.
