For a straightforward Drunken Master build in Baldur’s Gate 3, stay Monk through Level 12. This single-class route reaches the subclass’s listed Level 11 feature without adding multiclass trade-offs. It is a practical progression recommendation, not a proven damage optimum: available evidence does not establish exact starting ability scores, an act-by-act equipment route, or a reliable damage ranking against other Monk traditions.
What the Drunken Master does in BG3
Way of the Drunken Master is a Monk subclass added in Patch 8, which Larian described as BG3’s final major patch when it announced it. Larian’s Community Update 34 says the subclass is selectable from Level 3. Check any later hotfix notes before relying on balance or bug details, which can change. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement and Community Update 34 provide the official context.

The subclass is best understood as a mobile skirmisher, not a stationary damage build. Its features reward repositioning, using alcohol for limited Ki recovery, and fighting enemies who are actually affected by the Drunk condition. Larian describes the core concept as consuming alcohol from inventory or finding bottles in the world to recover Ki. Larian’s Community Update 30.

Recommended progression: Drunken Master Monk 12
Choose Way of the Drunken Master at Monk Level 3, then continue Monk through Level 12. The important subclass features arrive at Levels 3, 4, 6, 9, and 11; taking Monk to 12 keeps the progression simple while retaining the whole listed package.

| Monk level | Feature | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Drunken Technique | Replaces Flurry of Blows. For a bonus action and Ki, it makes two unarmed attacks and provides extra movement and Disengage. |
| 4 | Intoxicating Strike; Life of the Party | Intoxicating Strike can make a target Drunk. A hit grants Life of the Party, improving Armour Class and attack rolls against Drunk targets. |
| 6 | Redirect Attack | When a melee attack misses you, spend a reaction and one Ki point to make an unarmed attack against the attacker. The level also reduces the movement cost to stand from Prone. |
| 9 | Sobering Realisation | Hit a Drunk target for bonus Psychic damage and sober it. A successful hit also removes Life of the Party. |
| 11 | Drunkard’s Luck | Spend two Ki points to negate Disadvantage on one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. |
| 12 | Monk progression | Continue the single-class route. The available feature summary does not specify a separate Drunken Master feature at this level. |

How to use the build in combat
Use Drunken Technique to reposition
Drunken Technique is not a free extra Flurry of Blows: it replaces Flurry and uses a bonus action and Ki. Its value is the combination of two punches with extra movement and Disengage. Use it when the repositioning helps you reach a priority target, leave a dangerous spot, or avoid provoking opportunity attacks as you move away.

Set up Life of the Party against affected targets
Intoxicating Strike can apply Drunk, and Life of the Party improves your Armour Class and attack rolls against Drunk targets. The payoff depends on the target actually receiving the condition; do not assume every enemy can be made Drunk. The feature reference describes the interaction.
Treat Redirect Attack as a reaction, not a routine attack
Redirect Attack is conditional: an enemy’s melee attack must miss you, and using the response spends both your reaction and one Ki point. It can turn a miss into an opportunity to strike, but it is not a guaranteed additional attack each turn. Keep the reaction available when the chance to retaliate matters more than another reaction option.

Choose when to sober a target
Sobering Realisation is a Level 9 hit against a Drunk target that adds Psychic damage and removes the Drunk condition; a successful hit also removes Life of the Party. Consider whether the immediate damage is worth giving up those Drunk-target benefits for the remainder of the interaction.

Alcohol supports the subclass, but it is limited resource recovery rather than an unlimited combat engine. The BG3 Wiki says Cheeky Tipple restores half of the Monk’s Ki points, rounded down, once per day when the character drinks alcohol. Larian also describes the subclass as able to drink from inventory or bottles found around the Sword Coast to recover Ki. Cheeky Tipple’s feature reference.

The wiki identifies a Drunk equipment set as synergistic and notes that Wine Goblets can induce the Alcohol condition in combat without using a bonus action. These are useful gear leads if they fit your setup, but the available evidence does not establish item locations by act, a complete equipment-slot plan, or a best-in-slot order. The Drunk condition reference.
Should you multiclass?
There is no verified multiclass winner for this build. A split can add another class’s benefits, but it also delays or gives up Monk progression and can change how you spend actions and resources. Compare a proposed split on these points before committing:
- Which Drunken Master features you retain, especially the Level 9 and Level 11 features.
- What the other class contributes in exchange for the Monk levels.
- How the split affects action economy and resource use.
- Whether you want a simple progression or a specialized interaction that you have verified in the current game.
Without a supported comparison, Monk 12 is the clearer default—not a claim that it deals the most damage.
What this guide does not claim
Exact starting ability scores, a feat ranking, an act-by-act item route, and head-to-head damage results against Open Hand or Shadow Monks are not established here. Treat any specific numbers or claims about the highest-damage setup as unverified unless they come with current, reproducible evidence. The feature descriptions also do not establish that every enemy can be affected by Drunk.
