For most Steam Deck users, the best starting point is EmuDeck’s defaults—not a universal set of emulator tweaks. If games stutter or audio sounds poor, first check SteamOS Game Mode’s frame-rate limit and refresh rate: EmuDeck recommends turning the limit off and setting refresh rate to 60 Hz. Then make any game-specific changes with a per-game profile, and troubleshoot the emulator, controls, updates, and game files before trying speculative settings.
Start with EmuDeck’s defaults, then tune individual games
EmuDeck installs and configures a collection of emulators and tools, and says it does its best to optimize each emulator for the device. That is a baseline, not a guarantee that every game will run at full speed: performance and compatibility depend on the game, emulator, and configuration. During setup, Easy Mode applies defaults while letting you choose ROM/BIOS storage and integration options. Custom Mode exposes more choices, including emulator selection, system aspect ratios, shaders, and controller layout. If you are troubleshooting an existing setup, avoid changing several options at once; you will have a clearer idea which change mattered.
Check SteamOS frame pacing first
For poor performance or audio quality, EmuDeck’s first SteamOS check is to turn off the frame-rate limit and set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. This is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a promise of a particular FPS gain; EmuDeck publishes no benchmark or measured improvement for the change. Menu behavior can vary by Steam Deck model and SteamOS release, so use the current labels shown on your device if they differ.

- Open the emulated game in Game Mode if it is not already running.
- Press the … Quick Access Menu (QAM) button.
- Choose Battery, then open Advanced View.
- Set Framerate Limit to Off.
- Set Refresh Rate to 60.
These directions come from EmuDeck’s SteamOS performance troubleshooting guide. They address a system-level display/frame-pacing check; they do not identify a best setting for each emulator or game.
Keep a change to one game
If you want the adjustment to apply only to the game currently open, enable Use per-game profile in the QAM. This avoids changing the behavior of other games without a reason. Use the global setting only if you intend the adjustment to affect games more broadly.

Separate speed troubleshooting from image and convenience choices
EmuDeck Quick Settings include options such as RetroArch autosave, controller layout behavior, CloudSync, bezels, system aspect ratios, and LCD or CRT shaders. These primarily change convenience or presentation: bezels can fill vertical black bars, aspect ratio choices affect proportions, and shaders alter the image’s appearance. - Aspect ratio: choose the system’s preferred proportions or a personal alternative.
- Bezels: use them if you want artwork around games that otherwise show black bars.
- LCD/CRT shaders: select these for the intended visual effect, not as a general fix for stuttering.
- Autosave, CloudSync, and controller layout: choose based on workflow and control needs rather than presumed speed gains.
If a game still stutters, check its setup before adding tweaks
Confirm the emulator or core
Some systems can use more than one emulator or RetroArch core, and their settings are not interchangeable. EmuDeck’s FAQ uses PlayStation as an example: available choices include standalone DuckStation, SwanStation, and Beetle PSX. Steam ROM Manager parsers let you choose which entry to enable. Verify the Steam Input profile
EmuDeck supplies Steam Input profiles for selected emulators. If an emulator has no supplied profile, its FAQ recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. Profiles can enable emulator functions such as screen switching, so broken or unexpected controls may be a profile issue rather than a performance problem. In Game Mode, check the selected profile for the game before changing emulator performance settings.
Update the emulator and, if needed, reset its configuration
EmuDeck recommends keeping emulators current. On SteamOS, update Flatpak emulators through Discover; update AppImages or binaries through the emulator’s updater or EmuDeck; and update Windows executables through EmuDeck. In Manage Emulators, you can update emulators and tools, apply available EmuDeck settings updates, and update or reset an individual emulator’s configuration. If a configuration was changed accidentally or appears corrupted, resetting that emulator to EmuDeck’s configuration is a documented recovery option.
Check the game files and launch mode
EmuDeck generally recommends playing ROMs in Game Mode. In Desktop Mode, hold Start for three seconds to switch the controller configuration to gamepad mode. If a game will not launch, EmuDeck flags bad, incomplete, or incorrectly transferred ROM/BIOS files as possible causes. It also says Proton compatibility settings are not needed for emulated games added through Steam ROM Manager; do not set Proton compatibility for those entries. EmuDeck SteamOS troubleshooting

Choose changes by scope and purpose
Use the type of setting that matches the symptom. The tradeoffs below describe the options in EmuDeck’s documentation, not results from comparative performance tests.

What a “smooth emulation” setting can and cannot promise
EmuDeck’s published guidance supports a practical troubleshooting sequence, not a universal settings recipe. Its documentation does not provide a benchmark comparing EmuDeck settings or quantify an FPS gain from turning off the frame-rate limit and setting refresh to 60 Hz. Results depend on the specific game and emulator, so avoid treating any single tweak as a guarantee of smooth performance.
