Recommended Free Tools
For a low-end PC, start with 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, an 8 Mbps video bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. That is a practical starting point based on YouTube’s current ingest guidance—not a guarantee that a particular older computer can encode it smoothly. Test your own stream before going live, then adjust resolution or bitrate if the computer or connection struggles.
Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | A conservative balance for a lower-powered PC; YouTube’s guidance supplies ingest targets, not computer-performance benchmarks. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its guidance does not establish which codec or encoder implementation is fastest on your particular PC. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps | YouTube lists this as the recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 720p30. It lists 3 Mbps as the minimum, not the recommended target. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | These are YouTube’s listed audio settings. |
| Protocol | RTMPS, where supported | YouTube recommends encrypted transmission. |
| Other video parameters | Progressive scan; square pixels; two B-frames; one reference frame; CABAC; Rec. 709 for SDR | These match YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
These are YouTube ingest settings: they describe what your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube transcodes live streams to create multiple formats for viewers, so the encoder’s settings are not necessarily the formats viewers receive. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists the supported protocols and encoding parameters.
Choose a resolution and bitrate that fit your connection
The figures below are YouTube’s current H.264 ingest values, accessed October 3, 2026. “Minimum” and “recommended” are distinct values in YouTube’s table; the recommended figure is not a hard minimum.
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use 8 Mbps as the 720p30 target only if your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Run a speed test, but do not treat its result alone as proof that the stream will remain stable: test the actual encoder and scene too. If 8 Mbps is not sustainable, lower the bitrate and/or resolution and test again. A lower bitrate can mean lower picture quality.

720p30 versus 720p60
YouTube lists the same recommended H.264 ingest bitrate—8 Mbps—for 720p30 and 720p60. That does not mean both settings will be equally easy for every low-end PC. At 60 fps the encoder must produce twice as many frames per second as at 30 fps; that is a general technical consideration, not a YouTube-published benchmark for your hardware. Start at 30 fps if encoding stability is the priority, and try 60 fps only if your own test remains smooth.
When to consider 1080p
YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These figures are platform ingest recommendations, not an endorsement of those settings for an unspecified low-end computer. Move to 1080p only after testing shows that both the PC and connection can sustain it.

Test before the stream matters
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test on the same connection you plan to use. Confirm that the available upload bandwidth can support the total streaming bitrate; leave practical headroom rather than planning at the connection’s apparent limit. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend a speed test.
- Configure the encoder. Set 720p30, H.264, CBR, 8 Mbps video, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set the audio and transmission parameters from the table above where your encoder exposes them.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test in your streaming setup. Use movement and audio similar to the real stream—especially if it includes gameplay, scene changes, overlays, or several audio sources. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check stream health and messages. Look for dropped frames, unstable ingest, encoder overload, or audio problems. Review YouTube’s live stream health indicators and messages during the test and event; a successful speed test does not rule out encoder or ingest trouble.
- Change one major setting at a time. If the PC cannot encode smoothly, reduce frame rate or resolution and test again. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, lower bitrate and/or resolution. Repeat the representative test after each meaningful change.
YouTube’s recommendations and test advice are in its encoder settings guide and streaming tips. For the stream’s configuration options in YouTube Studio, see Manage live stream settings.
Troubleshoot common low-end streaming problems
- The stream drops frames or the picture stutters: Determine whether the encoder or network is the constraint by checking encoder and stream-health messages. For an overloaded PC, try 30 fps instead of 60, or lower resolution, then repeat the test. For insufficient upload capacity, lower bitrate and/or resolution.
- The stream is unstable even though a speed test looked good: Test under representative conditions and watch stream health. A speed test is a capacity check, not a substitute for testing the actual stream over the connection you will use.
- Picture quality is poor at a lower bitrate: Lower bitrate may reduce quality. If upload capacity permits, test toward YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate; otherwise, try a lower resolution rather than exceeding the connection’s capacity.
- 1080p or 60 fps does not run reliably: YouTube’s bitrate table does not establish what a particular low-end CPU or GPU can encode. Return to 720p30 and verify stability before trying a more demanding combination.
- Audio is missing or sounds wrong: Check that the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 stereo audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, then test with the same audio sources you will use live.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue: Review the message in YouTube’s live controls, verify the encoder parameters and connection, and repeat a test. YouTube’s live stream settings help covers managing those settings.
Copyright and reused material still matter
Encoder settings affect transmission quality, not whether you have the right to stream the material. Before broadcasting gameplay, music, video, or other third-party content, check that you have the necessary rights and understand YouTube’s applicable policies. A technically healthy stream is not a determination that its content is permitted.
