Best Encoding Software for Live Streaming: OBS, Streamlabs, vMix and Wirecast

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people starting desktop live streaming, OBS Studio is the best place to begin: it is free, open-source, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and gives you control over scenes, audio and stream settings. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want a more integrated creator toolkit. For a multi-camera show, compare production-focused options such as vMix and Wirecast against your exact inputs, operating system and budget before committing.

There is no universal winner: the right encoder depends on what you want to capture, how much production control you need and what your computer can handle. This guide focuses on software encoders; a separate cloud service can keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube around the clock.

What encoding software does

An encoder converts video into a digital format that can be sent as a live stream. Software encoders run on a computer; standalone hardware encoders are another option. YouTube describes encoder workflows as useful for gameplay and screen sharing, external audio and video equipment, and productions with several cameras and microphones. To send an encoder stream to YouTube, connect the encoder to the stream URL and key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.

The encoder is only one part of a working setup. Your cameras, microphone, capture hardware, network connection and computer all matter. A software package cannot make an incompatible input work or guarantee that a computer can encode a demanding scene at a chosen resolution and frame rate.

Best encoding software by use case

OBS Studio: best general-purpose starting point

OBS Studio is free and open source, with versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. It lets you combine sources into scenes, switch scenes with transitions, apply audio filters, preview a production in Studio Mode, view multiple scenes in Multiview and extend the software through plugins and scripts. That breadth makes it a strong starting point if you are comfortable configuring a flexible interface rather than relying on a more guided creator package. See OBS Studio’s official overview.

OBS is not automatically the best choice for every operator or computer. The work required depends on factors such as the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS notes that a computer meeting its compatibility requirements is not necessarily powerful enough for every streaming workload. Consult the OBS system requirements for the release you plan to use.

Streamlabs Desktop: consider an integrated creator workflow

YouTube’s encoder directory describes Streamlabs as built on OBS, with creator-oriented features such as alerts, shortcuts, tipping, face masks and overlays. It may suit a creator who values bundled tools and an integrated interface. Check Streamlabs’ current plan details to confirm which features are included, and consult its system requirements before installing. Streamlabs cautions that demanding content, other programs running on the computer, and advanced overlays or plugins can affect what hardware is adequate.

vMix and Wirecast: investigate for involved productions

If your show needs a structured multi-camera workflow, put vMix and Wirecast on your shortlist and evaluate them against the actual production. YouTube includes Wirecast in its encoder directory and describes encoder workflows as suitable for advanced productions. Before choosing either product, verify its current operating-system support, input and destination support, device limits and price directly with the vendor: the available product information does not establish a detailed, like-for-like comparison.

How to choose the right encoder

1. Confirm your computer and operating system

Check current requirements for the specific software release and your operating system. Then consider the work you intend to do, not just whether the application launches: encoding demands vary with resolution, frame rate, encoder choice and scene complexity. Leave capacity for the game, browser sources, other running software and any overlays or effects. Neither compatibility nor a minimum requirement is a promise of smooth performance for every stream.

2. Inventory your inputs

List every source you need to produce the show: game footage, a screen capture, one or more cameras, microphones, mixer audio and any remote contributors. A simple gameplay broadcast and a multi-camera production have different requirements. If you need to bring an HDMI camera or console into your computer, a capture card may be necessary; match it to the source and the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. A capture card is optional for setups that do not need it, and it does not replace encoder software.

YouTube gives a webcam, external microphone and headphones as examples of typical gaming or casual-streaming equipment. More involved productions may use multiple cameras and microphones, mixers or a hardware encoder. Choose equipment to solve a specific input or audio need rather than assuming every stream requires a professional rig.

3. Check the destination and connection method

Confirm that the platform you plan to use supports your encoder’s connection method and output requirements. For YouTube, the documented encoder workflow uses the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Follow YouTube’s current setup instructions for your account and stream rather than relying on an old saved configuration.

4. Balance control with convenience

Decide whether you need hands-on control of scenes, transitions, audio processing, previews, plugins and stream configuration, or whether bundled creator tools and a more integrated workflow are more useful. OBS documents extensive production controls; YouTube’s Streamlabs listing describes bundled overlays and alerts. Compare the actual workflows you will use, not just feature counts.

5. Work out total cost

Check current software license or subscription terms, then include the cost of any capture hardware, cameras or microphones your setup needs. No current, verified cross-vendor price comparison is available here, so check each vendor’s current terms rather than assuming a particular package is free or that a listed feature is included in every plan.

Set up a YouTube encoder stream

The exact controls vary by encoder and can change between releases. YouTube’s general workflow is to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room, then connect the encoder with the stream URL and key. Use the current YouTube and software documentation for product-specific button names and settings.

  1. Prepare the production. Connect the camera, microphone, game or screen source, and any capture hardware you need. In your encoder, add the sources and arrange them into the scenes you intend to use.
  2. Create the YouTube stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Select the encoder workflow and locate the stream URL and key shown for that stream.
  3. Connect the encoder. In the encoder’s stream settings, choose YouTube or the applicable custom-server option, then enter the URL and key as instructed by the software and YouTube. Do not share the key publicly.
  4. Check the output before going live. Confirm that the intended camera or screen, audio sources and scene are active. Check the encoder’s status and YouTube’s preview for problems before starting the broadcast.
  5. Start the stream deliberately. Start output from the encoder and follow the Live Control Room prompts to begin the broadcast. When finished, end the stream in the appropriate interface and confirm it has stopped.

Troubleshooting common encoder problems

The stream will not connect

  • Check that you copied the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube stream and entered them in the intended fields.
  • Confirm that the stream is set up in Live Control Room and that your account can use the encoder workflow.
  • If the key may have been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder rather than continuing to use a compromised key.

The video or audio is missing

  • Verify that the correct source is enabled in the active scene and that the camera or capture device is connected and selected.
  • Check the microphone or mixer input selected in the encoder, its mute state and its audio meter. Confirm that headphones or monitoring are not masking a routing problem.
  • For a console or HDMI camera, check the capture device’s compatibility with the source and intended output format.

The computer struggles during a stream

  • Reduce the workload by simplifying scenes or overlays, closing unnecessary programs, or choosing a less demanding resolution or frame rate.
  • Check the current system guidance for your encoder and account for the demands of the game or other content running at the same time.
  • Change one setting at a time and check the result; a compatible computer may still lack capacity for a particular combination of encoding settings and production elements.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Before streaming gameplay, music, recordings or other material, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the content and music you use. An encoder only transmits the material; choosing software does not grant rights to it. YouTube’s live-stream setup and platform rules apply regardless of which encoder you choose. For uploaded-video loops, review the copyright safety checklist and YouTube’s current guidance before scheduling a stream. Do not assume that permission to upload a recording automatically clears every use of it in a live broadcast.
