Intel N100

Best Energy-Efficient Mini PCs for a Low-Cost 24/7 YouTube Stream

An N100 mini PC can be a starting point for a modest 24/7 OBS stream, but measure the whole system and test the actual workload before relying on it unattended.

For a modest, locally produced YouTube stream, an Intel N100 mini PC is a sensible low-power starting point—not a proven 24/7 winner. ASUS lists an N100 configuration for its NUC 14 Essential, and Intel gives the N100 a 6 W processor TDP. Neither fact tells you how much the complete PC will draw at the wall or proves it can run your OBS scene continuously. If you only need to loop uploaded videos, a cloud service such as StreamNeo may avoid leaving a PC on at all.

First decide what your 24/7 stream needs to do

Use a mini PC for live production

A local computer running OBS makes sense when your stream depends on a live camera, gameplay, a capture device, screen sharing, overlays, filters, or a composed live scene. The computer must remain on, connected, and able to encode and send the program to YouTube.

Use a cloud loop for prerecorded video

If the channel can show uploaded recordings or a playlist rather than a live camera or gameplay feed, a cloud looping service may be a better fit than buying a computer to stay on around the clock. StreamNeo’s workflow is to upload a video or build a playlist, connect a YouTube stream key, and start the cloud broadcast. It is for prerecorded video streamed to YouTube, not live camera production.

Mini PC candidate: an N100 configuration

ASUS NUC 14 Essential with Intel N100

ASUS lists the Intel N100 among the configurations for the NUC 14 Essential. Intel specifies the N100 as a four-core, four-thread processor with a 6 W TDP, 4K-at-60-Hz output support, and Quick Sync Video. These are component and product specifications, not measurements of the entire mini PC under OBS. Intel also notes that capabilities can vary by complete system configuration and that performance varies with use and configuration. Intel N100 specifications; ASUS NUC 14 Essential specifications.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An N100 system is a reasonable candidate for a modest OBS workload, especially if the installed operating system, drivers, and OBS version expose a compatible hardware encoder. Do not assume OBS will offer the encoder you want just because the processor family includes Quick Sync. Confirm the exact SKU, included memory and storage, operating system, warranty, seller, and local availability before buying.

There is not enough comparable, model-specific evidence to declare the NUC 14 Essential—or another named mini PC—the best 24/7 choice by power use, noise, thermal behavior, reliability, or price. Treat it as a configuration to investigate and test against your actual scenes, not as a tested winner.

Choose for the stream, not just the processor name

OBS says its requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. Its system requirements documentation recommends the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Before comparing mini PCs, define the workload you will actually leave running.

  • Sources and scenes: Count cameras, capture inputs, browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and any other applications running alongside OBS.
  • Output: Decide on resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and whether you need a hardware encoder in your chosen operating system.
  • Connectivity: Check that the exact machine has a suitable wired network connection for your setup and that your internet connection can sustain the stream.
  • Extended operation: Consider cooling, fan noise, restart behavior, and whether the machine reconnects after a network interruption. A spec sheet cannot establish how it will behave unattended.
  • Whole-system power: Compare wall-power measurements under the intended stream, not processor TDP figures from different models.

Set OBS and YouTube to compatible ingest settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings and select a codec and settings that your system and OBS actually support.

As one concrete reference, YouTube’s guidance lists 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps; for H.264 at 1080p30 it lists 14 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees of stream health or evidence that a particular mini PC can encode that workload. The recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

  1. Open OBS and run the Auto Configuration Wizard. Use its result as a starting point, then verify the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against your intended broadcast.
  2. Check the available encoder. In OBS output settings, confirm whether the intended hardware encoder appears and works with your installed OS and drivers. If it does not, reassess the workload before relying on software encoding continuously.
  3. Set the stream key in OBS. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the broadcast and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
  4. Test your upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test. Make sure available upload capacity is sufficient for the selected stream settings, with room for normal variation and other network traffic.
  5. Test representative content before relying on it. Include audio and motion similar to the real broadcast, including overlays and concurrent applications. Start a test broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS.

Estimate the electricity cost from a real measurement

Processor TDP is not the complete computer’s wall draw. To estimate the cost of leaving a mini PC on, measure average whole-system watts during a representative stream, then use:

Annual electricity cost = average system watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 365 × your electricity price per kWh.

For example, insert the machine’s measured average wattage and your local tariff into the formula. A brief idle reading is not a substitute for measuring the stream workload, and the N100’s 6 W TDP is a processor specification—not a measurement of the PC’s consumption.

Buying and validation checklist

  1. Decide whether your channel needs a live local OBS production or can loop uploaded video.
  2. Write down the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio setup, and scene sources.
  3. Check the exact mini PC SKU and confirm that OBS can use the intended encoder with its operating system and drivers.
  4. Run a representative test with motion, audio, overlays, and other applications open; watch OBS load and YouTube stream health.
  5. Measure wall power during that test and estimate energy cost using your local electricity rate.
  6. Run an extended test and verify restart and network-interruption recovery before depending on the system unattended.

Common problems and what to check

OBS does not show the expected hardware encoder

Quick Sync on the processor does not by itself guarantee the encoder is available to OBS. Check the installed OS, graphics or chipset drivers, OBS version, and actual encoder choices. Test the available option before committing to the configuration.

YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers

Check whether the upload connection is stable and has capacity for the selected bitrate. Confirm the codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance, then test again with representative motion and audio. Use YouTube’s stream-health indicator rather than assuming a successful OBS connection means the ingest is healthy.

The PC runs hot, becomes noisy, or stops during a long session

A processor specification does not establish sustained behavior in a particular mini PC. Check airflow, the machine’s placement, cooling, and system logs; then repeat an extended test under the real scene. Do not treat a short successful stream as evidence of round-the-clock reliability.

The stream does not resume after a restart or network drop

Test recovery deliberately before leaving the stream unattended. Verify that OBS starts as expected, the machine reconnects to the network, and the broadcast resumes correctly after a restart or interruption. Recovery behavior depends on the complete setup; it is not established by the N100 specification.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your channel can use prerecorded uploads or a playlist rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps the YouTube broadcast running from the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for current details, or start your free day.
