There is no universally best base location in Fallout 76: the right C.A.M.P. site depends on where you explore and which destinations you want nearby. For convenience, compare a candidate’s map position with free fast-travel destinations and the places you visit often; for exploration, choose a region you want to learn. Then test the spot in-game before committing to a build. Bethesda does not publish a ranked list of coordinates or site-by-site travel savings, so exact “best spot” claims need current in-game verification.
How to choose a base location
Judge possible sites by the job you want your C.A.M.P. to do, rather than treating one coordinate as best for every player. Bethesda identifies six regions in Appalachia: the Forest, Toxic Valley, Ash Heap, Savage Divide, The Mire, and Cranberry Bog. A base near the region you explore most can be more useful than one that is centrally placed but far from your usual destinations. Bethesda’s newcomer guide also explains that discovered locations can be reached by fast travel for Caps, while several destinations are free.
- Reduce paid travel: Compare the candidate with free destinations and with the discovered locations you visit regularly. Treat this as a route-planning choice, not a guaranteed Caps saving.
- Explore a particular region: Pick a region based on the places and activities you want to reach. A base can make that area a convenient starting point, but no region is officially designated the best.
- Build for the setting: Scenery, roleplay, terrain, and the layout you want can matter as much as map position. Check whether the actual spot accepts your C.A.M.P. before planning around it.
Fast-travel convenience: what is free
Bethesda lists travel to your C.A.M.P., teammates, Vault 76, Foundation, The Crater, Fort Atlas, and public events as free. Travel to discovered locations can cost Caps, and the Travel Agent Charisma Perk Card, available at level 26, discounts fast travel. These rules make the best location for minimizing paid hops personal: it depends on which destinations you use and the routes you take. The official guide does not provide a formula for how many Caps a particular C.A.M.P. saves.
Use the map to compare a candidate’s position with your regular stops. A site close to a destination you already reach for free may not improve your travel as much as one that helps you reach a cluster of discovered locations you visit often. Do not assume a central-looking site will always be cheaper; check the route and cost in your own game.

Use exploration tools to find your own shortlist
Train-station maps and lookout towers reveal nearby points of interest, but visiting a location in person is still necessary to fully discover it. That distinction matters: a map marker you have not discovered is not necessarily a dependable fast-travel stop. Use these tools to identify an area, then explore it and check which destinations become available on your map. Bethesda’s guide to getting started describes this discovery process.
For new players
Start with the region you are already exploring rather than choosing coordinates based on an unverified ranking. Discover nearby points of interest as you go, then decide whether your base should be closer to those stops or positioned to help you branch into another area.

For current exploration activities
Bethesda’s June 2, 2026 Infestations release notes say that infestations must be discovered while exploring. The paper map indicates a general area, and the activity can appear in all six Appalachia regions. There is no officially identified best C.A.M.P. location for finding them; choose an area to investigate and follow the map’s general indication.
Check that the site works for your build
Placement rules have changed since many older location guides were written. Bethesda’s September 2, 2025 C.A.M.P. Revamp announcement says Relaxed Build Rules became available in Adventure Mode, reducing restrictions on what players can place. That update does not establish that every surface or coordinate is buildable, so verify the specific location in-game instead of relying on old placement advice.

When you are ready to move, Bethesda’s newcomer guide describes the basic process as opening the Pip-Boy, selecting “Move C.A.M.P.,” placing the apparatus at a suitable location, and building there. If the spot does not accept placement, choose another candidate; do not assume that the broader rule change guarantees access to that exact terrain.
A practical way to choose and test a site
- Pick your priority. Decide whether the main goal is fewer paid travel hops, convenient access to a region or activity, or a particular building setting.
- Choose a region and nearby landmarks. Use your map, train-station maps, and lookout towers to identify areas worth checking. Keep in mind that full discovery requires visiting locations in person.
- Compare travel destinations. Note which nearby stops you have discovered, which free destinations you use, and where you expect to travel often. Check actual route costs in-game rather than estimating Caps saved from a site’s apparent position.
- Test placement before investing in a layout. Use the Pip-Boy’s “Move C.A.M.P.” action and see whether the proposed spot accepts the apparatus. If it does, build with the actual terrain and placement limits in view.
- Reassess as your play changes. If your regular activities shift to another region, a site that once suited your routes may no longer be the most convenient. Bethesda describes C.A.M.P. movement as an in-game option, so your first choice need not be permanent.
Why this guide does not name a single winning coordinate
The official sources establish fast-travel rules, exploration tools, region names, and the 2025 placement-rule change, but they do not compare individual C.A.M.P. coordinates. A claim that a named spot is currently buildable, resource-rich, popular, or saves a specific number of Caps requires site-level evidence that those sources do not provide. Use named locations from other players as leads to test—not as an official ranking or a guarantee that a spot still works for your build.
