The best family game depends on how your group will play. For instant party fun, choose Wavelength. For creative long-term play, choose Minecraft. If everyone has a device and enjoys loud teamwork, Spaceteam is the standout. For one shared screen, MONOPOLY: The Board Game is the clearest fit.

This guide uses US App Store prices and availability observed on August 16, 2026. Prices, ratings, age labels, compatibility and features can change by country and over time.

The best family games

Wavelength: best overall party game

Choose Wavelength when you want a game that gets people talking quickly without demanding fast reflexes. Players give clues and work together to place a dial on a hidden spectrum. The App Store listing supports 2–10+ players, both same-room and remote play, and cross-platform play.

It is a strong mixed-age choice because adults and children can contribute different interpretations of the same clue. Reading and social discussion matter more than dexterity. The US listing rates it 9+; younger children may participate with an adult but may not understand every prompt.

Wavelength is free to download, with optional in-app purchases, and the listing says it has no ads. Its main weakness is that it depends on conversation and reading social cues, so it is less suitable for a group that wants action or a completely quiet game. Alternative: Heads Up! for a more physical party format.

Minecraft: best creative game for repeat play

Choose Minecraft if your family wants a world to revisit rather than a game that ends after one round. Creative mode supports collaborative building, while Survival mode adds resource gathering, hostile creatures and more pressure. It supports local-network and online multiplayer, and the listing describes Bedrock cross-platform play.

The iPhone and iPad purchase is listed at $6.99 in the US, with additional purchases for Marketplace content, add-ons and Realms services. The listing says free Xbox Live accounts support online multiplayer for up to four players, while Realms supports a private cross-platform world with up to 10 friends. Families should verify account, network and parental-control requirements before arranging online play.

Minecraft is rated 9+. The game can be excellent for collaborative building, but online communities, communication features and extra purchases require supervision. The listed app size is 1.6 GB, and worlds or downloaded content can require more storage. Alternative: Apple Arcade if you want several different games without buying them individually.

Spaceteam: best high-energy cooperative game

Choose Spaceteam for a group that enjoys shouting, quick decisions and shared panic. Each player operates a separate control panel and must read instructions to teammates while the ship breaks down. The result is genuinely cooperative: nobody can succeed by playing alone.

  • HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.

  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

It supports 2–8 players, and every player needs a mobile device. That makes it a poor choice for a family with one iPad, but a good choice when everyone already has an iPhone or iPad. The listing also identifies Apple TV support.

Spaceteam is free with in-app purchases and rated 9+. It works best in a room where noise is acceptable; it is not the right pick for a quiet journey or a group sensitive to time pressure. Alternative: Wavelength for slower, more conversational teamwork.

MONOPOLY: The Board Game: best for one shared device

Choose MONOPOLY when the family wants a recognisable board game on one iPhone or iPad. Its Pass & Play mode lets players share a single device, while offline AI provides a solo or mixed human-and-computer option. Online play is also supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The US price is $4.99, with in-app purchases; the App Store listing says there are no ads. It is rated 4+, but that label does not mean every preschooler can follow the rules. Reading, counting money, turn-taking and the potentially lengthy competitive structure make it more practical for older children or families willing to help.

MONOPOLY is a particularly useful travel download because its AI mode is listed as offline. Do not interpret that as a promise that online multiplayer works without internet. Alternative: Quilts and Cats of Calico for a quieter, more strategic board-game experience.

Heads Up!: best for a large group

Choose Heads Up! when the group wants fast charades and has one phone to pass around. The active player holds the device against their forehead while everyone else gives clues; tilt controls determine whether an answer is correct or skipped. The listing advertises more than 100 themed decks.

The US App Store price is $1.99, with additional paid content and other in-app purchases. It requires iOS/iPadOS 13 or later and is rated 13+. The listing also notes mature or suggestive themes, alcohol, tobacco and drug references, user-generated content and in-app purchases. It should therefore not be presented as an all-ages children’s game.

Its advantage is accessibility for a large in-person group; its drawback is that the best experience depends on performance, noise and players comfortable with the available content. Alternative: Wavelength for a less physical party game.

Family Style: Co-op Kitchen: best for device-owning families

Choose Family Style for cooperative cooking when two to eight players can each use a device. Players coordinate stations, pass ingredients and complete recipes against a timer. Everyone has a role, so it encourages communication rather than direct competition.

The US listing rates it 4+, but time pressure may overwhelm very young children. It is free with in-app purchases. Most importantly, the current US App Store listing says “Only for iPhone,” so do not assume it runs on iPad. Test the device mix before planning a family session.

  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.

This is a good option for a group with several charged iPhones, but a poor one-device choice. Alternative: Spaceteam for older children and adults who want a louder, more frantic cooperative game.

Quilts and Cats of Calico: best calm strategy game

Choose Quilts and Cats of Calico for a quieter family that enjoys board-game strategy. It offers solo play, AI opponents, online multiplayer, ranked play, a campaign and cross-platform multiplayer. The cat theme makes it approachable, but the underlying strategy is more demanding than its 4+ rating suggests.

The US price is $9.99, and the listing reports a 783 MB app size. It is designed for iPad and also supports iPhone. The App Store rating snapshot was 3.8 from roughly 34 ratings on August 16, 2026, a small sample that should not be compared directly with games carrying hundreds of thousands of reviews.

This is better for older children, teens and adults who are willing to learn rules than for independent preschool play. Alternative: MONOPOLY if familiarity matters more than strategic depth.

Apple Arcade: best catalogue for families

Choose Apple Arcade when the household wants many ad-free games rather than one specific title. Apple describes the service as offering 200-plus premium games without advertising or in-app purchases, with new games and updates added regularly. Apple lists US pricing at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year, and Family Sharing covers the subscriber plus up to five additional people.

The catalogue supports online and offline play at the service level, but multiplayer features vary by game. Offline may apply to solo or local modes; online multiplayer, account checks and some downloads still require an internet connection. Apple’s catalogue and included titles can change.

The trade-off is ownership. Access ends when the subscription is cancelled, although Apple says iCloud-enabled progress may remain available if the user resubscribes. A subscription can be good value for a family that will play several included games; buying one $4.99 or $6.99 game may cost less for a household with a single need.

See Apple Arcade’s current catalogue and pricing.

Best choice by situation

  • One iPhone or iPad passed around: MONOPOLY for board gaming, Heads Up! for a party, or Wavelength for discussion.
  • Four or more players: Wavelength, Heads Up!, Spaceteam or Family Style, depending on whether you have one device or several.
  • Remote relatives: Wavelength is the simplest fit; MONOPOLY and Minecraft also offer online play with more setup.
  • Young children: Start with adult-supervised Family Style or MONOPOLY, but judge reading, arithmetic and time-pressure demands rather than relying on the 4+ label.
  • Teenagers and adults: Wavelength, Spaceteam, Minecraft, Quilts and Cats of Calico or Heads Up!, subject to its 13+ content rating.
  • Quiet play: Wavelength or Quilts and Cats of Calico.
  • Loud teamwork: Spaceteam or Family Style.
  • Free download: Wavelength, Spaceteam or Family Style, remembering that all three list in-app purchases.
  • No ads and no in-app purchases: Apple Arcade’s included games, provided the subscription remains active. MONOPOLY and Wavelength also list no ads, but they are not purchase-free services.
  • Travel: MONOPOLY’s offline AI is the clearest documented option. Download and test everything before leaving, and do not assume online multiplayer works offline.

One device or one device per player?

Check this before downloading. One device means genuine pass-and-play or a shared screen: MONOPOLY, Heads Up! and in-person Wavelength fit here. Everyone needs a device means each participant operates their own screen: Spaceteam and Family Style require this kind of arrangement. Multiplayer with several devices can also require the same Wi-Fi network, separate accounts, compatible app versions and parental approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minecraft is more flexible but also more complicated. Local-network play, online play, accounts, Realms, communication settings and device storage should all be checked before a planned session. Remote play may additionally need voice chat or another way to talk.

Family safety and setup checklist

  1. Read the current App Store age rating and content descriptors for the US storefront or your own country.
  2. Check whether the game lists ads, in-app purchases, paid decks, Marketplace content or recurring services.
  3. Confirm every player’s device, operating-system version and available storage.
  4. For multiplayer, test the connection and accounts before the family event.
  5. Review or disable text and voice chat, user-generated content and online-community features for children.
  6. Use Apple purchase controls such as Ask to Buy or purchase restrictions where appropriate.
  7. Download games and updates before travel; offline support differs between solo, local and online modes.
  8. Do not treat a 4+ rating or Apple’s Family category as proof that a game is easy, quiet, educational or suitable for unsupervised preschool play.

Bottom line

For most families, start with Wavelength. Pick MONOPOLY if one device must serve everyone, Minecraft for an ongoing creative project, Spaceteam for noisy cooperation, and Apple Arcade if you want a broad ad-free catalogue. Confirm the device arrangement, age fit and purchase model before installing—those practical details matter more than a generic “family” label.
