Best FFmpeg Bitrate and Resolution for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a conventional H.264 SDR YouTube stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps video if your internet connection can sustain that upload rate reliably. If it cannot, use 720p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps. YouTube lists 5 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively, as the H.264 minimums—but a minimum is not a guarantee of a stable 24/7 stream.

For continuous file playback, FFmpeg can loop a video and send it to YouTube over RTMP. The bitrate and resolution are only part of the setup: codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, connection stability, and recovery behavior all matter.

Choose a bitrate for your output resolution and frame rate

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, not its separate upload-video recommendations. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 input rates in Mbps. Match the row to the resolution and frame rate FFmpeg actually sends.

Output H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are platform recommendations for live ingest, not promises about playback quality or uninterrupted operation. YouTube transcodes live input into playback formats, so viewers may receive a version different from the encoder’s input.

Codec changes the applicable rates. YouTube publishes separate columns for H.265/HEVC and AV1; for example, it recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 35 Mbps at 2160p60 for those codecs, compared with 14 Mbps and 50 Mbps for H.264. Check the relevant codec column rather than applying H.264 values to another encoder.

Which resolution should you use for a continuous stream?

1080p30: a practical default

Use 1920×1080 at 30 fps when the source benefits from the detail and your upload connection can reliably carry YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation, plus audio and transport overhead. It is a sensible starting point for many feeds with ordinary motion, not a universal best setting.

720p30: prioritize consistency on a tighter connection

Use 1280×720 at 30 fps when upload capacity, encoder load, or the need for a dependable connection makes 1080p impractical. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps H.264 for this output. Its 3 Mbps minimum is a floor, not the preferred target where the connection allows more.

60 fps: spend bandwidth for smoother motion

Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters and both the computer and network can sustain the applicable rate: 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 or 8 Mbps for 720p60. Higher frame rates increase processing demands; test with representative gameplay or other fast-moving footage rather than judging from a static screen.

1440p and 4K: only when the source warrants it

Higher resolutions require substantially more upload capacity and encoding resources. For H.264, YouTube recommends 21 Mbps at 1440p30, 34 Mbps at 1440p60, 42 Mbps at 4K30, and 50 Mbps at 4K60. Use them when the source and intended viewing experience benefit from the extra detail. YouTube notes that 4K/2160 live streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option.

A static or low-motion feed may need less encoding work than gameplay, but YouTube’s published table still gives the recommended rate by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat an unlisted lower rate as an official recommendation.

Set FFmpeg’s output to match YouTube’s live requirements

YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For standard SDR, its guidance includes progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP.

This example loops a local file and sends 1080p30 H.264 output at 14 Mbps. Replace the output dimensions if you select another resolution; ensure the input and output frame rates match your intended stream. The command is an implementation pattern, not a YouTube-prescribed command.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"

Here, -r 30 sets the output frame rate and -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, representing a two-second interval at 30 fps. A 60 fps stream would need a 120-frame GOP for the same interval. Verify the actual keyframe cadence and encoder behavior with your installed FFmpeg build. The -b:v and -maxrate values set the video target and ceiling; -bufsize 28M is an example rate-control buffer choice, not a value mandated by YouTube. The -re option reads the file in real time, while -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite file looping.

Set YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL and STREAM_KEY from your YouTube Live Control Room configuration. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public command example, shared script, or exposed logs. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes real-time file input with FLV output to an RTMP destination.

Configure and test the YouTube stream

  1. Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure the stream. Use the server URL and stream key shown there; do not publish the key.
  2. Choose the encoder output. Set the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube can detect settings automatically; manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key.
  3. Set the matching bitrate and keyframes. Use the applicable codec row in YouTube’s live table, choose CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds.
  4. Check sustained upload capacity. Compare reliable upload capacity—not just a brief peak—to video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably deliver.
  5. Run a representative test. Send footage with the movement and audio expected in the real stream. Check the Live Control Room’s stream health, messages, detected resolution, and frame rate before relying on the setup.

What FFmpeg looping and recovery can—and cannot—do

-stream_loop -1 keeps FFmpeg reading the input file repeatedly, but looping alone does not ensure the process, computer, network, or YouTube event remains available indefinitely. Power loss, ISP or local-network failures, thermals, source-file problems, and YouTube event behavior are distinct risks.

FFmpeg documents FIFO output options that can keep processing at real-time rate during temporary failures and attempt recovery. See the FFmpeg all-options documentation. Treat FIFO recovery as a mitigation to test in the actual deployment, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve one live event or that outages will not occur. Monitor FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube’s stream-health display.

Troubleshoot bitrate and 24/7 stream problems

  • YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: Check sustained upload capacity against the chosen video rate plus audio and overhead. If the connection cannot reliably carry the target, lower the resolution or frame rate and select the matching bitrate row.
  • The stream looks soft or blocky: Confirm FFmpeg is sending the intended resolution and frame rate, then compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommended rate for that H.264 output. Remember that YouTube transcodes the ingest for playback.
  • Motion stutters or the encoder struggles: Check CPU or hardware-encoder load and test representative movement. Consider 30 fps instead of 60 fps or a lower resolution if the system cannot sustain the selected output.
  • YouTube detects the wrong resolution or frame rate: Verify the actual FFmpeg output and inspect Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects settings automatically; manual resolution selection is available through a custom stream key.
  • The stream stops when the file ends: Confirm -stream_loop -1 is present and that FFmpeg remains running. This option repeats the file; it does not restart a terminated process or repair a failed connection by itself.
  • Output errors occur during a temporary connection failure: Review FFmpeg logs and test whether your chosen FIFO recovery configuration behaves as intended. Also check local network, ISP, and power; recovery options do not guarantee platform availability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining an FFmpeg process on your own computer is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
