Best FFmpeg Preset for Encoding a Large YouTube Playlist on a CPU

Start with FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder and -preset faster, then time a representative clip from your own playlist. It is a throughput-oriented starting point, not a universal optimum: the right setting depends on your CPU, footage, output target and deadline. YouTube does not require a particular x264 preset.

Choose a preset by testing your actual workload

x264 presets trade encoding speed against compression efficiency. Faster presets generally finish sooner; slower presets may produce smaller files at the same CRF, but take longer. The preset does not guarantee a particular visual quality or file size.

The x264 preset sequence is ultrafast, superfast, veryfast, faster, fast, medium, slow, slower and veryslow. medium is the default. placebo is not a practical queue-speed recommendation: it spends extreme processing time for diminishing practical value.

A practical starting point

Try faster first if you need a reasonable balance with an emphasis on throughput. If the deadline is tight, compare it with veryfast or fast. If time is available and file size matters, compare medium or slow. These are starting points to evaluate, not official YouTube or FFmpeg recommendations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Estimate the queue from a sample

  1. Choose a representative clip, including demanding material such as fast motion, fine detail or visible grain.
  2. Encode it with the settings you intend to use, and record elapsed time and output size.
  3. Repeat with another preset while keeping the source, FFmpeg build, codec, CRF, frame rate and other settings unchanged.
  4. Compare the results visually on difficult scenes as well as by time and file size. Select the fastest option that meets your quality and storage goals.

Use the sample’s duration and content mix to estimate the queue. No single duration estimate applies to every playlist: results vary with processor, FFmpeg and x264 build, resolution, source complexity and concurrent workload.

Example CPU encoding command

For a progressive SDR source when you want to use constant-quality encoding, this is an illustrative starting command:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset faster -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

The example’s -crf 20 is not a YouTube requirement or a prescribed value. Adjust CRF to find your preferred visual-quality and file-size balance. If you need a target bitrate or output size, use a bitrate-based workflow instead. Inspect the encoded file before uploading, and preserve the source frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to change it.

Preset and CRF do different jobs

  • -preset selects encoder settings that affect speed and compression efficiency.
  • -crf selects constant-quality rate control. It is not a target bitrate.

FFmpeg describes the preset option as “Set the encoding preset (cf. x264 –fullhelp).” The FFmpeg documentation identifies medium as the default preset.

Match the upload to YouTube’s published guidance

YouTube Help recommends an upload format and encoding characteristics, not a specific x264 preset. Its recommendations include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP with a GOP of half the frame rate, CABAC, variable bitrate and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. It also says to upload at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. See YouTube Help’s recommended upload encoding settings.

The same YouTube Help page gives these recommended bitrates for SDR uploads. They are reference recommendations, not required ceilings or guaranteed quality outcomes:

SDR upload format YouTube Help recommendation (accessed 2026)
1080p at 24, 25 or 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 48, 50 or 60 fps 12 Mbps
2160p/4K at standard frame rate 35–45 Mbps
2160p/4K at high frame rate 53–68 Mbps

The page distinguishes SDR from HDR, so do not apply these SDR figures to HDR footage. YouTube says there is no required bitrate limit. Choose guidance for the video’s resolution and frame-rate band; do not treat a recommendation as a mandatory encoding target.

Common problems and adjustments

  • The queue is not finishing by the deadline: test faster or veryfast on representative material and compare elapsed time. Do not assume one preset or a hardware upgrade will solve it without measuring your own workload.
  • The output files are larger than you want: compare a slower preset at the same CRF for compression efficiency, or adjust CRF if you can accept a different quality/file-size balance. Recheck difficult scenes.
  • Quality or file size changes unexpectedly between samples: verify that the input type, resolution, frame rate, CRF, codec and other encoding options were held constant. Different footage can also produce different results.
  • The upload does not match the source’s motion cadence: check that the output frame rate preserves the recorded frame rate, as YouTube recommends.
  • You are choosing a bitrate from YouTube’s chart: confirm whether the source is SDR or HDR and select the row for its resolution and frame-rate category. The figures above are SDR recommendations.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live around the clock, encoding a playlist is only one part of the job. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running on your home computer or connection. Upload, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
