For a church’s 24/7 YouTube worship stream, start with H.264 at 1080p30, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, CBR, and a keyframe every two seconds over RTMPS. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube Help’s current guidance (checked 2026) gives 14 Mbps as its recommended video bitrate; use that if the actual upload connection can sustain it with headroom. If it cannot, consider 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, or test a lower bitrate within the published range. There is no separate India-only encoder profile in YouTube’s guidance: measure the connection at the church where the stream will run.

Recommended settings at a glance

This is a practical starting profile for a fixed-camera church stream with ordinary worship movement. Use progressive video, square pixels, 8-bit Rec. 709 SDR, and preserve the camera feed’s aspect ratio rather than stretching it. Match the output resolution and frame rate to both the source and the upload link.

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Ingest RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingestion. Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from the channel’s Live Control Room.
Video codec H.264 / AVC A broadly supported encoder choice listed by YouTube.
Resolution and frame rate 1920×1080 at 30 fps A practical balance for a fixed worship camera; reduce resolution if the connection cannot sustain the required bitrate.
Rate control CBR; 14 Mbps for YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 recommended bitrate YouTube’s current H.264 table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30. A 10 Mbps target is a possible bandwidth-sensitive compromise within that range, but it is not YouTube’s H.264 recommendation.
Keyframes / GOP Every 2 seconds; at 30 fps use a 60-frame GOP YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC-LC, stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz These match YouTube’s listed stereo guidance. Feed a clean mix from the church sound board and check it during quiet sections.
Picture format Progressive, square pixels, 8-bit Rec. 709 SDR YouTube’s advanced SDR guidance; retain the source aspect ratio.
Upload capacity Stable outbound bandwidth with at least 20% headroom YouTube recommends a 20% margin and says to account for the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams as well as other network use.

YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1, but use those only when the installed FFmpeg build supports the encoder and the channel’s ingest accepts it. For a straightforward workflow, H.264 is the sensible default.

Choose the profile your church connection can sustain

1080p30 H.264

YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. Use 14 Mbps when a measured, sustained connection can carry the stream plus the recommended headroom and other network traffic. A 10 Mbps video target is an editorial compromise within YouTube’s published range—not its recommended H.264 figure—and may be useful when bandwidth is more constrained.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

720p30 H.264

For a limited or shared connection, 720p30 is often a more dependable choice than attempting 1080p that regularly buffers or drops. YouTube’s current guidance lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 720p30. Choose a bitrate the connection can hold consistently; a stable lower-resolution stream is more useful than a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly fails.

Calculate upload headroom

YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth margin. For example, a 14 Mbps video stream requires more than 14 Mbps of available sustained upload once audio, protocol overhead, other stream traffic, and the margin are considered. Measure at the actual streaming location and during the times the church network is in normal use. A speed test at another location or during a quiet period does not establish what the encoder can sustain during a service.

FFmpeg command for a looping worship video

The following illustrative command loops a local file and sends its first video and audio streams to YouTube. Replace the filename, ingest URL, and key with the correct values from YouTube Studio. The example assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264 and RTMPS support, and source material suited to 1080p30. It is a template, not a tested guarantee for every FFmpeg build or media file.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i worship.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

The command uses a 10 Mbps video target as a bandwidth-sensitive compromise. To match YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, change all three video-rate values—-b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize—from 10M, 10M, and 20M to 14M, 14M, and 28M, respectively, and confirm that the connection has sufficient upload headroom. The buffer is set to twice the target rate in this example.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

For 720p30, YouTube lists 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate. Set -b:v and -maxrate to a suitable value within YouTube’s 3–8 Mbps range, and size the buffer proportionately. The exact behavior of encoder options can vary by FFmpeg version and build; check ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264 and the local FFmpeg documentation.

What the important options do

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re reads it at its native playback rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 selects the first video and first audio streams. If the file has no audio stream, or the desired mix is on a different track, adjust the mapping rather than assuming the first audio stream is correct.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding; -pix_fmt yuv420p is a common 8-bit format for this workflow.
  • -r 30 sets the output frame rate; use it only when 30 fps is appropriate for the source and intended stream.
  • -g 60 -keyint_min 60 sets a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, equivalent to two seconds. -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframes so the interval remains fixed.
  • -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate caps it, and -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. These are video values; audio is configured separately.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 encodes stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP-family ingest workflow. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection.

Set up the YouTube stream and test before going public

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days among its live-stream prerequisites. Review the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide.
  2. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, copy the current ingest URL and stream key and configure the stream options you need. YouTube’s instructions are at Manage live stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script, or expose it in logs.
  3. Measure the real outbound connection. Check sustained upload capacity where the encoder will run, with normal church network use. Keep the 20% margin YouTube recommends; include any backup stream in the total.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test. Use worship footage with movement and the actual audio mix. Verify the preview, audio continuity, aspect ratio, stream health, and that the selected bitrate remains stable. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event.
  5. Plan for failures and archives. Monitor the stream and decide who will respond to encoder, power, or internet problems. Keep a local recording if retaining a complete archive matters; do not assume an indefinitely long live stream will be fully archived by the platform.

YouTube’s encoder settings page contains its current codec and bitrate guidance: YouTube Live encoder settings. Its network guidance warns that the total bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and that connectivity disruptions can break a stream: YouTube Live streaming tips.

Copyright and continuous worship programming

Before looping a recording or playlist, confirm the church has the rights needed for the music, lyrics, recordings, and any other material in it. A worship context does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted works. Use material the church owns, has licensed for the intended use, or is otherwise authorized to stream, and check the license’s scope for YouTube livestreaming and continuous replay. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules can affect a stream even when the encoder is configured correctly; review the current account and content requirements before scheduling a 24/7 broadcast.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • Stream buffers, drops, or reports poor health: the upload link may not sustain the selected total bitrate, or other users may be consuming capacity. Measure at the encoder location, restore the 20% margin, reduce bitrate, or switch from 1080p30 to 720p30.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the current ingest URL and stream key were copied correctly, the key has not been changed, and the FFmpeg build supports the required RTMPS workflow. Never paste the key into a public support post.
  • No sound or the wrong audio: confirm the file contains the intended track and that -map 0:a:0 selects it. Check the board feed in both quiet and loud sections, and confirm the preview before going public.
  • Image is stretched or has bars: preserve the source aspect ratio and inspect the input dimensions. Do not force a 16:9 output by stretching a differently shaped camera or video source.
  • Keyframe interval is wrong: at 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. Confirm the actual output frame rate and encoder options; changing frame rate without adjusting the GOP changes the interval in seconds.
  • The stream stops after a network or power interruption: encoder settings alone cannot ensure indefinite operation. Monitor the stream and have a recovery procedure for the encoder, power, and internet connection; YouTube notes that a network disruption can break a stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church does not want a computer and home or office connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card (one free day per account). The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. For Indian churches, UPI and cards are supported. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
