1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou usually do not need to convert a MOV file just to use it in OBS: OBS lists MOV as a supported Media Source format. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which requires VLC to be installed—and 64-bit VLC if you use 64-bit OBS. If the MOV does not play correctly in that setup, convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a compatibility-minded starting point. There is no single best bitrate or quality setting for every MOV, so preserve the source’s resolution and frame rate and test a short representative clip.
Choose the OBS source before converting
Media Source for an individual file
OBS lists MOV among the video types supported by Media Source, alongside MP4, MKV, AVI, and WebM. That does not guarantee every MOV will play: MOV is a container, and its video and audio codecs still need to work with the playback stack on your system. Check the actual file in your intended OBS setup before transcoding.
VLC Video for a playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source provides playlist controls, including looping and shuffling. VLC must be installed for this source to be available; pair 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. The source also exposes settings for visibility behavior, network caching, audio-track selection, and subtitles.
These source settings control how a playlist operates; they do not determine a video bitrate or an encoding quality value. If you use a playlist, test your clips in VLC Video rather than assuming a file that works in a different player will behave identically there.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to keep MOV, copy its streams, or transcode
- Keep the MOV: If it plays properly in the OBS source you plan to use, conversion is unnecessary.
- Try stream copy: If the streams already suit the destination container and playback environment, remux them without re-encoding. Copying avoids another lossy generation, but it does not change a codec merely because the output filename ends in .mp4.
- Transcode: If the existing codecs or stream properties do not work in the target setup, encode to a more widely supported combination. OBS’s format guide lists H.264 video and AAC audio in both MP4 and MOV; H.264/AAC in MP4 is a sensible compatibility-focused target, not a guarantee for every computer or file.
The .mov extension alone does not tell you whether the video is H.264, HEVC, ProRes, or another codec, or whether its audio can be copied into MP4. Inspect the streams before choosing. OBS and VLC versions, operating system, hardware decoding, and the file’s characteristics can affect playback.
Inspect the input, then choose a command
Check what the file contains
Use FFmpeg or another media inspector to identify the video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, audio-stream count, and any subtitles or additional tracks you need. The commands below explicitly select the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. If your file has multiple tracks or subtitles, choose the streams you actually need rather than relying on those defaults.

Try stream copy when the existing streams fit
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mp4
-map selects streams; -map 0:a:0? makes the first audio stream optional, so the command can proceed when there is no audio. -c copy copies streams without re-encoding. This is a remux, not a conversion of the underlying codecs. If the container cannot hold a stream or OBS/VLC cannot play it, use a transcode instead.
Transcode to H.264 video and AAC audio
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
This encodes the selected video as H.264 with FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder and the selected audio as AAC. -preset medium, -crf 20, and -b:a 192k are practical starting examples, not OBS-approved or universally optimal settings. FFmpeg documents the preset and CRF controls; test the output and adjust for your quality, file-size, and conversion-time needs. Output options belong before the output filename, as shown.

How to tune quality, size, and playback
CRF: quality against file size
CRF is a quality-based control for libx264. A lower CRF generally targets higher quality and produces a larger file; a higher value generally reduces file size at the cost of more visible compression. Encode a representative short clip and compare it in the intended playlist before processing a whole library. Source complexity affects the result, so one number cannot promise identical quality across different videos.
Preset: encoding time against compression efficiency
The preset controls encoding speed and compression efficiency. A faster preset can finish sooner; a slower preset can improve compression efficiency but takes longer. The right choice depends on how much conversion time you can spend and how small the output needs to be.

Resolution and frame rate
Keep the source dimensions and frame rate unless you have a concrete reason to change them, such as a playback-performance issue or a defined output requirement. The cited OBS and FFmpeg guidance does not establish a single best resolution or frame rate for MOV playlist files. Avoid reducing either by habit; test any change against the viewing result you need.
Audio, extra tracks, and subtitles
AAC is a suitable audio choice for the compatibility-oriented MP4 transcode. If the existing audio is compatible and you want to avoid another lossy encode, you can copy audio while encoding video, but verify that the chosen container and playback setup support it. For files with multiple audio streams, subtitles, or other tracks, specify the desired streams with -map and confirm the selected audio or subtitle track in VLC Video’s source settings.

Common problems and fixes
- The MOV will not appear as a playlist source: Use VLC Video for the playlist and install VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The file works elsewhere but not in OBS: The extension does not establish codec compatibility. Test the file in the actual OBS source; if it still fails, inspect its streams and transcode to H.264/AAC in MP4.
- The copy command fails or the output will not play: Stream copy does not convert incompatible streams. Check the codecs and container compatibility, then use the transcode command.
- The output has no audio: The sample command maps only the first audio stream, and audio is optional. Check whether the input contains audio and whether the intended track is the first one; map the correct stream if it is not.
- The wrong audio or subtitle track plays: Select the intended streams explicitly with
-map, then check the VLC Video source’s track controls. - The converted file is too large or takes too long to encode: Test a different CRF for the quality-size balance and a different preset for speed versus compression efficiency. Judge the result on a representative clip before batch-converting.
Copyright and playlist responsibility
Changing a file container or encoding does not grant permission to use its contents. Use media you own or are licensed to use, and check the applicable rights before including a clip in a public stream or video. OBS playlist and FFmpeg settings address playback and encoding, not the copyright status of the material.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an OBS playlist converter: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud keeps the stream running, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
