There is no single best file system for every always-on YouTube stream. Use ext4 for straightforward media storage on Linux, NTFS on Windows, and consider ZFS when you need pooled storage and dataset-level management and can administer it confidently. None of these choices, by itself, guarantees an uninterrupted stream: backups, reliable hardware, power, network access, and stream-process recovery matter too.
Choose by the system that stores and serves your videos
For a local computer, server, or NAS that reads video files for a stream, start with the host operating system and storage setup. The practical choices below are recommendations based on platform and workload documentation, not a controlled comparison of filesystem performance while feeding a YouTube stream.
| Situation | Practical choice | Why—and what it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Linux machine with one or a few media directories | ext4 | A familiar Linux choice with metadata journaling, large-file support, and persistent preallocation. Those features do not prove it is faster than alternatives for your machine. Linux kernel ext4 documentation |
| Windows machine | NTFS | The natural Windows platform choice; its recovery and capacity characteristics depend on Windows version and cluster size. Microsoft’s NTFS overview |
| Linux storage server or NAS where pooled storage and dataset management are useful | ZFS | Its pool and dataset features can suit a managed media server, but it requires more administration than a simple filesystem choice. OpenZFS recommends a 1 MiB record size for sequential workloads. OpenZFS workload tuning |
| Removable disks or multiple operating systems | Verify the exact host and client requirements first | The cited platform guidance does not establish a universally best cross-platform format. Formatting a disk can erase existing data. |
What matters for video files
Sequential reads, not a YouTube-specific filesystem benchmark
A stream reading a prerecorded video generally consumes a large file sequentially. OpenZFS says to set recordsize=1M on datasets subject to sequential workloads; Jellyfin’s media-server guidance likewise says 1 MiB is likely appropriate for a ZFS dataset holding large media files. These are configuration recommendations, not measured results for YouTube ingest or proof that ZFS is faster.
If the same ZFS system runs a media-library application with a database, keep that workload separate: Jellyfin advises that large media files and its SQLite database should not share the same tuning assumptions. It recommends a smaller 4 KiB or 8 KiB record size for the database dataset. Changing ZFS recordsize does not retroactively change existing stored data; files must be rewritten for the new setting to affect them. Jellyfin storage guidance

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compression and free space on ZFS
OpenZFS recommends LZ4 compression for the sequential-workload case. Do not assume it will meaningfully shrink already-encoded video: savings depend on how compressible the files are. OpenZFS also advises keeping pool free space above 10% to avoid allocator behavior that can reduce IOPS, particularly on mechanical disks. This is ZFS pool-management advice, not a general threshold for ext4 or NTFS.
Crash recovery is not the same as protecting video data
ext4 journals metadata by default
The Linux kernel documentation says ext4’s default data=ordered mode journals metadata to help protect filesystem consistency after a crash. It does not guarantee that file data blocks are consistent after a crash. The alternative data=journal writes data and metadata through the journal and is slower; it is a different recovery/performance tradeoff, not a backup. Linux kernel ext4 journal documentation

NTFS logs filesystem transactions
Microsoft describes NTFS as maintaining a transaction-based log and checkpoint information to help restore filesystem consistency after a system failure. That recovery mechanism is not an independent copy of your videos. Microsoft’s documented NTFS size limits also depend on Windows release and cluster size: its overview lists up to 8 PB for applicable Windows Server 2019-and-later and Windows 10 version 1709-and-later configurations, subject to cluster-size conditions; its 4 KiB default-cluster-size row lists a 16 TB maximum file and volume size. These figures are conditional platform limits, not a recommendation for a stream library, and applications or services may impose smaller limits.
Filesystem, storage reliability, and stream uptime are separate decisions
Filesystem choice cannot prevent a drive failure, host or power loss, network interruption, or a failed streaming process. A journal helps with filesystem recovery; it does not make a backup or guarantee every recent video write. Keep an independent copy of important source videos and plan for the failure modes of the entire chain. The available platform guidance does not show that any particular filesystem alone delivers 24/7 availability.

Capacity also depends on details not specified by the filesystem choice: the library size, video bitrates, number of concurrent readers, and retention period. Estimate from your own files and usage rather than assuming a universal drive size. For hardware, match a disk to the host’s interface, bays, workload, and redundancy plan; no particular capacity or model is established as right for every reader.
