The figures describe the processors, not complete MAME systems. Memory configuration, firmware, operating-system drivers, cooling, renderer, resolution and the emulated machine can change the result.
Which CPU is better for MAME?
Pick the R1505G for demanding or CPU-limited emulation
MAME often depends heavily on fast individual CPU cores when emulating more complex arcade hardware. The R1505G’s stronger published single-thread result is therefore the most useful directional signal for difficult machines. Its higher multi-thread score also gives more headroom for the operating system, front-end software and background tasks.
This is a platform-level recommendation, not a measured MAME frame-rate ranking. The available evidence does not establish how many frames per second either processor delivers in a specific game or renderer.

Pick the J5005 for a low-power, quiet build
The J5005 has four physical cores and a 10 W TDP. That makes it attractive for compact systems designed around low heat, simple cooling and modest electricity use. Its lower CPU performance can become the limiting factor in demanding emulation, but it remains a sensible choice when acoustics and efficiency outrank maximum headroom.
Does MAME need more CPU or GPU?
For many demanding machines, CPU performance—especially single-thread speed—is the first constraint. The emulator still needs a capable graphics path for the chosen renderer, resolution and display, so the answer is not CPU-only.

- CPU-limited case: Favor the R1505G’s stronger single-thread performance when emulation speed drops even with a reasonable renderer and resolution.
- GPU-limited case: Check the actual graphics hardware in the mini PC. A J5005 system may use only its modest UHD 605, while another may include a discrete GPU.
- Display-output case: AMD’s R1000 family supports up to three DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0b displays, but verify that the specific R1505G system exposes those outputs.
A December 2023 AnandTech forum discussion described a J5005 paired with a Radeon E9173 discrete GPU and said the configuration “totally changes things.” That is an anecdotal observation about one system, not a controlled comparison of J5005 and R1505G MAME performance. It does illustrate why comparing complete systems is more meaningful than comparing CPU names alone.
Is the R1505G worth its extra power?
It can be, if you need the additional emulation headroom. The R1505G is configurable from 12 W to 25 W, whereas the J5005 is specified at 10 W. PassMark’s comparison reports approximately 40% higher power use for the R1505G alongside its roughly 21% higher multi-threaded score. Sustained performance consequently depends on the mini PC’s heatsink, fan profile, firmware power limits and case ventilation.

What to check before buying a mini PC
- Identify the exact graphics hardware. Confirm whether the listing uses UHD 605, integrated Vega graphics or a discrete GPU.
- Verify memory. Check capacity, channel configuration and whether RAM is replaceable; the listing’s memory design can affect integrated-graphics performance.
- Check display connectors. Count the physical HDMI or DisplayPort outputs rather than assuming the R1000-family maximum applies to every board.
- Inspect cooling and power settings. Look for a heatsink and ventilation suitable for sustained load, especially on a 12–25 W R1505G system.
- Confirm software support. Check operating-system, graphics-driver and controller compatibility for the MAME version you intend to run.
- Evaluate platform age. Both chips are older embedded parts; the J5005 is discontinued. Seller warranty, system condition and return terms may matter more than launch specifications.
- Compare complete configurations. For a meaningful test, keep RAM, storage, operating system, MAME version, resolution, renderer and cooling the same.
Can either chip run modern MAME games?
There is no single “modern MAME” performance level. MAME emulates many different arcade platforms, and the required CPU and GPU resources vary substantially by machine, renderer and resolution. The R1505G is the safer choice when you want more margin for newer or heavier systems because of its stronger published CPU results. The J5005 is the efficiency-oriented option, but demanding titles are more likely to expose its limits. Verify the exact games you care about on the complete system rather than relying on the processor label.
