OBS Studio is the strongest-supported free choice for running a recorded study stream on YouTube from your own computer. It can send a prerecorded video or playlist to YouTube Live, but a 24/7 broadcast still depends on your computer, power, media files, and internet connection remaining available. If you would rather not keep a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that loops uploaded video to YouTube.
Which free software should you use?
Use OBS Studio if you want a configurable local encoder and can leave a computer running. OBS Project describes OBS as open-source and free to use for any purpose. The available evidence supports it as a practical free option, not as a proven winner over every other encoder: no controlled comparison establishes that it is universally best.
YouTube Studio is part of the live-broadcast workflow, but it does not replace the encoder that must continuously send your prerecorded video. For a local setup, OBS performs that encoding and transmission while your machine is on.
How to set up a recorded study stream with OBS
- Prepare the content. Choose a video or playlist you have the necessary rights to use. Confirm that the files are available on the computer that will run the stream.
- Configure OBS to play the media. Build an OBS scene with a source for the prerecorded video or playlist, and check that playback and looping behave as you intend. Exact menu labels and setup details can vary by OBS version; the sources cited here do not establish specific menu steps or encoder settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use YouTube’s live workflow to create or schedule the broadcast, then connect the encoder using the stream key or other connection method YouTube presents for that stream. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Check the incoming feed. Before relying on a long-running broadcast, confirm in YouTube’s creator interface that video and audio are arriving as expected, then start the stream. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, hardware minimum, or network-speed figure, so choose settings using the current OBS and YouTube guidance for your particular setup rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all value.
- Plan for interruptions. Keep the computer powered and awake, preserve access to the media files, and maintain the internet connection. Arrange a way to check the broadcast and restart it if needed: free encoding software alone does not ensure uninterrupted uptime or automatic recovery.
What a 24/7 local stream depends on
- Computer operation: OBS must keep running; a shutdown, crash, restart, or sleep state can interrupt the broadcast.
- Power and connectivity: The machine needs power and a working upload connection for as long as it is sending the stream.
- Media availability: The recorded video or playlist must remain accessible to OBS throughout playback.
- Monitoring and recovery: The reviewed setup guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic restart. Decide how you will notice a dropped stream and bring it back.
OBS on your computer or a hosted service?
| Consideration | OBS on your computer | StreamNeo cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On your computer, which must remain on and connected. | In the cloud; your computer does not have to stay on. |
| Cost basis | OBS is free to use, according to OBS Project. Your own hardware, power, and internet costs are separate. | One flat price per slot for any supported quality; plans differ by billing length. A first day is free with no card, one free day per account. |
| Video handling | OBS encodes and sends the configured output; the reviewed evidence does not specify suitable universal settings. | Uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. |
| Recovery | The reviewed OBS setup guidance does not establish automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. |
| Rights responsibility | You need the rights for the material sent to YouTube. | You still need the rights for the material sent to YouTube; using a hosted service does not grant them. |
For an option that runs the uploaded recording or playlist without relying on your home computer, StreamNeo is the cloud choice to consider first: it is always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Copyright and YouTube livestream rules
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights to use live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. An educational or “study” label does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast music, video, or other material.
YouTube also says livestream content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may restrict a creator’s ability to livestream. Neither OBS nor a cloud encoder guarantees that rights-cleared material will avoid automated interruption. Check the current rules and permissions for all material in your stream before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting a local broadcast
- YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check that OBS is running, the broadcast is active in YouTube’s live workflow, and OBS is connected with the stream key for the intended broadcast. If a key was exposed, replace it in YouTube before continuing.
- The video stops or goes black: Check that the media file is still accessible and that the OBS media source has not reached the end or failed to loop. Recheck playback before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream goes offline after a power or network interruption: Restore the computer and connection, then check YouTube’s live interface and restart the encoder or broadcast as needed. The reviewed sources do not establish automatic recovery for OBS.
- YouTube interrupts or restricts the stream: Review the channel’s live status and any notice from YouTube, then resolve the stated policy or rights issue. Do not assume that changing encoders fixes a copyright or Community Guidelines problem.
