OBS Studio is the best free starting point if you can leave a computer and its internet connection running. Build a scene with a birdsong audio source and a still image or looped visual, then send it to YouTube. If the stream must continue while your computer is off, a cloud service is more suitable—but a finite free allowance is not the same as free 24/7 streaming.

For the best free route, choose OBS if a computer can stay on. For a stream that must continue after that computer is shut down, compare cloud services by their actual continuous-use terms: a free monthly allowance with a fixed number of hours does not provide free nonstop operation.
How to make a birdsong stream with OBS
1. Prepare the recording and visual
Choose a birdsong recording you have permission to use for a YouTube livestream, its saved replay, and any intended archive. Pick a still image or looped visual whose rights also cover that use. If you are streaming a prepared recording, you do not need a microphone. A microphone is relevant only if you want to capture birds live.
2. Create the OBS scene
- Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project for your operating system.
- Open OBS and add a scene for the stream.
- Add the visual as an image or video source and arrange it in the preview.
- Add the prepared birdsong file as an audio source. Play it in OBS and confirm that its meter moves and the sound is audible.
- If using a video file with audio, ensure it is set to loop. For a prepared recording, verify the audio source continues or restarts as intended; do not assume a source will repeat merely because the scene remains active.
3. Configure the YouTube output
Connect OBS to YouTube using the stream setup shown in your YouTube account, and keep the stream key private. YouTube account requirements apply; the available guidance here does not establish a current eligibility waiting period or maximum live-stream/archive duration, so check YouTube’s live controls for your account rather than relying on a generic number.

Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish basic output settings for your system and connection. The appropriate bitrate depends on the selected output and the capacity and stability of your upload connection; there is no single bitrate established here for every birdsong stream. 4. Test before leaving it unattended
- Check the YouTube preview for both picture and sound, including that the audio is not clipped or unexpectedly silent.
- Let the loop run long enough to confirm the audio restarts or repeats correctly.
- Disable computer sleep and plan for power, network and application interruptions. A local OBS stream depends on the computer and connection continuing to operate.
- Monitor stream health when possible; neither a local setup nor a YouTube stream should be assumed immune to interruption.
Copyright and YouTube rules to check
YouTube says, “Music and sound effects from the YouTube Audio Library are copyright-safe.” That assurance is specific to the YouTube Audio Library; YouTube says it knows only Audio Library music and effects to be copyright-safe and disclaims responsibility for material from other channels or libraries. A natural-sounding field recording can still be owned by its recorder or subject to a license. Confirm that the rights cover continuous livestreaming, the replay/archive, and the visual—not just personal listening or a one-time upload. Do not assume a recording is cleared because it depicts nature or is labeled royalty-free.
What does “free nonstop” actually mean?
OBS itself is free, but a local 24/7 setup still depends on the electricity, computer and internet connection you provide. A cloud service removes the need to keep your own computer on, but check the amount of included streaming time and the paid price required for uninterrupted operation. Upstream’s reviewed offer lists 24 free streaming hours monthly and unlimited use for one stream at $30 per month; commercial terms can change.
