For the free do-it-yourself route, use OBS Studio. OBS is free, open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its sources can combine media, images, text, devices, and other scene elements. Set up a looping gameplay stream in OBS
- Check that your channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips and getting-started requirements before scheduling your stream.
- Prepare the recording. Confirm the gameplay video plays correctly and has the audio you intend to broadcast. Check that you have permission to use the game footage and any music or third-party material in it; the rights position depends on the game and content, so do not assume a particular soundtrack or recording is cleared.
- Create a scene and add the video. In OBS, create a scene, then in Sources select + → Media Source. Choose the local gameplay file in the source properties and turn on Loop. OBS documents Loop as replaying the media file when playback reaches the end. For multiple files, OBS offers a VLC Video source that can play a playlist and loop it; VLC must be installed. - Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and retrieve the stream key from the stream settings. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the key using the available connection method. Keep the key private: it lets an encoder broadcast to your channel. - Set output to suit your system and upload connection. There is no single safe bitrate or resolution for every gaming PC and internet connection. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest initial streaming settings; reduce resolution or frame rate if the computer is struggling or the connection cannot sustain the output. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can put substantially more load on a system than 30-fps streaming, so test before committing to a long broadcast. OBS Help Portal · OBS Studio overview.
- Start with a test and inspect YouTube’s preview. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before sharing the stream. Confirm that the video appears, the audio is audible, the loop restarts as expected, and the connection remains stable. - Start the live broadcast and monitor it. Once the preview is correct, start the stream in YouTube Studio if the event requires it. Keep OBS, the computer, and the internet connection running, and check periodically for playback, audio, or connection problems.
Copyright, reused footage, and channel rules
A successful technical setup does not establish that you may rebroadcast every gameplay recording or soundtrack. Check the game publisher’s rules for gameplay videos and streaming, and review rights for music, overlays, and any other third-party material. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. The applicable permission can vary by game and by the material in the recording; no blanket clearance follows from using OBS or from having recorded the footage yourself.
Also distinguish permission to broadcast from a channel’s broader eligibility or monetization decisions. A looped recording is still prerecorded material being presented live; do not imply it is a live gameplay session. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before relying on a rerun format.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop. If using several clips, verify the VLC playlist and its loop setting.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube service and stream key, then look at the Live Control Room preview. If needed, retrieve the key again from the correct stream’s settings.
- Frames drop or the stream disconnects: OBS identifies unstable connections or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as causes of dropped frames. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, lower output demands if needed, and test the connection before a longer stream.
- The computer becomes overloaded: A 60-fps stream can demand substantially more from the system than 30 fps. Try a lower frame rate or resolution and test with the game and OBS running together.
- There is no sound or the wrong sound: Check the Media Source audio and OBS audio meters during a test, then listen to the YouTube preview. Verify the source file itself has the intended audio.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Confirm channel verification and check for a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days.
Optional equipment is not required for a prerecorded rerun
A webcam or microphone is only needed if you want a facecam or live commentary. A capture card is relevant when capturing an external console or device, not for replaying a video file already on the computer.
