Which free software should a church use?
OBS Studio is the strongest free-software choice for a local broadcast. How to loop a prerecorded sermon with OBS
The exact OBS labels and controls can vary by version. The following is a practical setup outline, not a verified click-by-click path. YouTube’s current Live guidance should be used for channel-specific eligibility and broadcast setup requirements.
- Confirm livestream access. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast using the channel’s current YouTube Live workflow. Check the channel’s eligibility and any activation requirements shown there before planning a service.
- Prepare the OBS scene. Add the sermon recording as a video source, or prepare the playlist arrangement you intend to use. Configure the source to repeat if your OBS version offers that control. Check that the recording’s audio and video appear correctly in the preview.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Set the stream destination using YouTube’s current stream workflow and the channel’s stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not display it in the scene, share it publicly, or leave it exposed in a recording. If it is compromised, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check the entire transition at the end of the recording, including whether the next playback begins as expected. Listen for gaps, abrupt audio changes, or silence; inspect framing and confirm the picture is not cropped. Test the actual duration and playlist arrangement you plan to use.
- Watch stream health during the broadcast. Keep OBS and YouTube Studio visible to whoever is monitoring. OBS says increasing dropped frames can indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Reduce the streaming load or address the connection if dropped frames persist, then verify the result before relying on it for a public service.
Do not assume that a broadcast will run indefinitely or that every live stream will be archived. Check current YouTube guidance for the schedule and archive behavior you need, and decide who will respond if the stream stops or a platform warning appears.

Copyright checks before rebroadcasting a service
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. Identified material can cause a placeholder to appear, interrupt or terminate a live stream, and licensed content may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Review rights for every element in the recording, not only the sermon: the sermon itself, worship songs and backing tracks, displayed lyrics, photographs, illustrations, video clips, and guest contributions. YouTube identifies permission, applicable copyright exceptions, public-domain works, and Creative Commons terms as possible routes for using someone else’s work, but none guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. A church or nonprofit purpose does not automatically make a rebroadcast lawful.
