The best free VTuber setup depends first on your avatar format: use VTube Studio to track and animate a Live2D Cubism model; use VRoid Studio to create a 3D avatar, then pair its VRM file with a compatible tracker such as VSeeFace. Use OBS Studio to compose scenes and send the finished broadcast to your streaming platform. These tools do different jobs, so there is no single app that replaces the whole workflow.

What each free app does
VTube Studio: tracking for Live2D
VTube Studio uses a webcam or compatible smartphone to animate a Live2D Cubism model. Its official requirements documentation says webcam eye and blink tracking generally works best at 1280×720 or higher, and that 15–30 FPS is sufficient for good tracking. Those are product recommendations, not independently measured benchmarks. Phone tracking means buying a webcam is optional.
VTube Studio does not load VRM or VRoid models. Its free version is a demo with feature limits; the official FAQ and current Steam listing are the places to confirm exactly which limits and platform terms apply. The FAQ says PRO enables features including phone-to-PC streaming for longer than five minutes and removing the app logo. VRoid Studio: create a 3D avatar
VRoid Studio is a free tool for creating and customizing 3D characters, including facial and other character features and textures. It is an avatar-creation tool, not the tracking or broadcast step. Exporting a model does not make it compatible with every tracker; choose one that accepts the model format, such as VRM, and confirm its current requirements. A comparison identifies VSeeFace as a free option for a VRM workflow, but check the tracker’s current compatibility information before installing it. The app being free does not settle the rights for every exported model, clothing item, prop or other third-party asset. Check the relevant asset terms, particularly if you plan to monetize streams or use the model commercially.

OBS Studio: scenes, capture and broadcast
OBS Studio is the broadcasting and recording layer. It can combine sources such as a game, avatar window, webcam, images and text into scenes, then encode and send the output to a platform. OBS is free and open source, available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its official help portal says it can be used for any reason under GPLv2, without a watermark or feature limitations. Set up a first VTuber stream
- Confirm the model format. For a Live2D Cubism model, start with VTube Studio. For a 3D VRM model, use a tracker that explicitly supports VRM. Do not try to load a VRoid/VRM model into VTube Studio.
- Install and configure the avatar tracker. Load the model into the compatible app, select a webcam or supported phone tracking method, and check that face movement and expression changes appear as expected. For VTube Studio webcam tracking, its documentation recommends 1280×720 or higher for eye and blink tracking; it describes 15–30 FPS as sufficient.
- Install OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS recommends this as a starting point for settings suited to the computer and intended use. The wizard is a starting configuration, not a substitute for checking the stream on your target platform.
- Create a scene and add sources. Add the game or window capture, the avatar/tracker output, and any image or text elements you need. Arrange and resize sources in the preview so the avatar does not cover important gameplay or information.
- Check audio input. Confirm the intended microphone or other audio source is active and that its meter responds. Listen to a short recording or private test to catch muted, clipped or doubled audio before going live.
- Connect OBS to the streaming platform. Follow that platform’s current live-stream setup to obtain or connect a stream key. Treat a stream key like a password: do not display it on screen or share it, and reset it in the platform’s settings if it is exposed.
- Test before the public broadcast. Check the avatar, game capture, microphone, desktop/game audio and scene layout in a recording or platform test. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers its wizard, sources, audio checks and streaming setup.
What “free” does and does not cover
- OBS Studio: free and open source, with no watermark or feature limitations according to its official help portal.
- VRoid Studio: the software is free to use; individual third-party assets and their usage rights are separate.
- VTube Studio: its free demo has feature limits. Confirm the current platform-specific details in the official FAQ and listing.
- The complete setup: a compatible model, phone or webcam, paid feature, or third-party asset may add cost depending on your choices. “Free software” does not necessarily mean every component or usage right is free.
Common setup problems and fixes
The tracker will not load the avatar
Check the model format before reinstalling anything. VTube Studio is for Live2D Cubism and does not support VRM/VRoid; a 3D VRM model needs a tracker that accepts VRM. Verify the export format and the tracker’s current compatibility requirements.

The avatar moves poorly or misses blinks
Check lighting, camera position and whether the tracker can see your face clearly. If using VTube Studio with a webcam, its documentation recommends 1280×720 or higher for eye and blink tracking and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient. If you use phone tracking, confirm the phone-to-PC feature and its current free-version limits in the VTube Studio FAQ.
The avatar or game is missing from the OBS preview
Confirm that the relevant source was added to the active scene, is visible in the source list and is not hidden behind another source. Check that the capture source points to the correct game or window, then verify the tracker output is available to OBS using the tracker’s supported integration method.

The stream has no microphone or game audio
Check OBS’s selected audio input and output devices, then watch the audio meters while speaking or playing sound. Make a brief test recording and listen back; this helps distinguish a muted source from a monitoring or routing issue.
The platform will not accept the stream key
Copy the current key from the platform’s live setup rather than an old note, and keep it private. If it may have been exposed, replace or reset it through the platform. A key connects the encoder to a broadcast; it does not grant rights to stream copyrighted content.

Copyright and platform rules still apply
Using a VTuber avatar does not change the rules for the material in your stream. Make sure you have rights to broadcast game footage, music, overlays and other content, and check the streaming platform’s current policies. A free tracker or encoder does not grant a license to third-party assets. Review the terms for your avatar and any clothing, props, music or graphics you did not create yourself.
