If you already own a gaming PC, OBS Studio is the best defensible free way to keep gameplay live on YouTube: it is free, open-source software, and YouTube identifies encoder streaming as a common route for gaming. The trade-off is that your PC, power and internet connection must keep working. Also, a stream that stays live for 24 hours is not necessarily saved as a complete replay.
What “24/7” means on YouTube
A continuous broadcast and a complete replay are different things. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. If preserving replays matters, run shorter sessions and make a local recording as a backup. YouTube’s guidance is to check that the local archive file is growing and monitor the live stream’s audio and video quality. YouTube’s archive guidance and its DVR guidance explain the limits.
Best free option: OBS on a gaming PC you already have
OBS sends the game capture and other scene elements from your computer to YouTube using an encoder stream. OBS is free and open source, so this approach avoids a streaming-software subscription and cloud-hosting bill. It is not hands-off hosting: a crash, power loss, internet outage or game failure can interrupt the broadcast, and this workflow does not establish automatic recovery. YouTube describes encoder streams as commonly used for gaming and gameplay with overlays. OBS Project’s Help Portal provides OBS guidance.
Set up OBS and start the YouTube stream
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its current guidance says you must be at least 16 to livestream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before setup.
- Install OBS from the official OBS Project. Use the OBS Project’s own download and help resources rather than relying on a third-party mirror. OBS is free and open source.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream. YouTube documents the workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose a reliable encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Set resolution, bitrate and other encoder options using YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, balancing picture quality against what your PC and connection can sustain while the game is running. There is no single ideal bitrate or resolution established for every game, computer and connection; avoid choosing settings your system cannot maintain reliably.
- Build and check the gameplay scene. Add the game capture and any overlays you want, then make sure the scene shows only content you intend to broadcast. For an around-the-clock stream, confirm the game can remain in the desired state and that unattended play will not expose unwanted on-screen content.
- Start OBS and verify the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Complete YouTube’s Go Live action if it prompts you to do so. Keep an eye on audio and video quality after the stream begins; YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover monitoring.
- Plan for local failures. Decide who will notice a disconnect and how the game and encoder will be restarted after a crash, outage or other interruption. Do not assume the stream will recover automatically. If you need a replay, record locally and confirm the recording file continues to grow during the broadcast.
