Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the closest match if you want another story-driven campaign in the Ace Combat universe. For a different take on arcade dogfighting—especially on PC with a flight stick or VR—try Project Wingman. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launched on October 2, 2026, so these are alternatives for a different campaign, mode, or setup, not substitutes you need while waiting for its release.
Which game should you choose?
| Game | Best fit | Platforms established by the cited source | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown | Another Ace Combat campaign and the same fictional universe | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam, Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco catalog) | Direct series predecessor, with a conflict between Osea and Erusea |
| Project Wingman | A distinct Ace Combat-inspired option, especially for PC players exploring flight hardware or VR | PC-focused coverage; check the current store page for supported platforms (PC Gamer) | Conquest Mode, reported HOTAS compatibility, and native VR support |
Choose Ace Combat 7 for the closest series match
Bandai Namco’s series catalog lists Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown as released on January 17, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. It is the direct franchise comparison: the story follows the conflict between Osea and Erusea in the series’ fictional setting, Strangereal.
Pick it if the appeal of Ace Combat 8 is its campaign, squadron drama, and arcade-style fighter combat, and you want another game in that series rather than a new interpretation. The catalog also highlights clouds and scenery. Choose the edition for your platform and check its current store listing for availability and support; the catalog does not establish feature or performance parity with Ace Combat 8.
Choose Project Wingman for a distinct PC-focused alternative
PC Gamer’s coverage of Project Wingman describes it as an Ace Combat-inspired alternative with intense, missile-heavy air combat. Its Conquest Mode adds a different objective: fight for territory and build an air fleet. That makes it worth considering if you want more than a conventional story campaign.

How these games compare with Ace Combat 8
Ace Combat 8 is available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, according to Bandai Namco’s game page and its Steam listing. The publisher describes it as an arcade-inspired flight-shooting game with a story campaign, real-world fighter aircraft, cinematic scenes, and weather that affects play. Its story is set in Strangereal: the Wings of Theve and Joker Flight join the Federation of Central Usea as it fights to reclaim its homeland from the Republic of Sotoa.

Its online offering is more specific than a generic multiplayer label. Bandai Namco’s multiplayer announcement says the Air Base hub can accommodate up to 100 players and that online play has separate progression and saved data, with cross-play. Announced modes include Co-Op Assault, a PvE high-score mode, and Co-Op Warfare, a PvPvE mode featuring two teams of four alongside NPC units.
The available sources do not establish current multiplayer feature parity, player activity, or ongoing online support for Ace Combat 7 or Project Wingman. If online play is your deciding factor, check each game’s current store information and community or publisher updates rather than assuming either matches Ace Combat 8’s co-op, PvPvE, or cross-play setup.
