For the 2024 ROG Ally X, ASUS’s published starting points include Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5 and other demanding PC games at reduced graphics settings. Treat these as manufacturer reference configurations—not guaranteed “best” settings: ASUS tested them in Turbo mode while plugged in, and performance can differ on the original ROG Ally, on battery, or after game and driver updates.
The practical goal on a handheld is a frame rate that feels steady and controls that respond well, not Ultra graphics or maximum resolution at any cost. Use the game settings below as places to start, then tune for your device and whether you’re playing plugged in or on battery.
Which games and settings should you try first?
ASUS publishes example settings for seven games on the 2024 ROG Ally X. Its examples cover two resolution approaches: native 1080p with reduced presets, or 720p with Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) and a different preset. These are separate reference configurations, not a promise of matching performance, image quality or battery life.

These configurations are from ASUS’s ROG Ally X performance page. The examples make useful starting points, but they aren’t a ranked list of the best games, nor independently tested settings for every Ally. ASUS labels its chart as in-game average FPS, but numerical chart values are not reliably available from the cited page, so no game-specific FPS figures can be confirmed here.

What ASUS tested
The published results were measured on the 2024 ROG Ally X with Ryzen Z1 Extreme, Windows 11, BIOS 301, Armoury Crate SE 1.5.5, 24GB RAM, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and the device’s 1920×1080, 120Hz display. ASUS used Turbo mode at 30W on AC power with 65W power delivery; the FPS limiter and V-Sync were off. ASUS cautions that results vary by configuration and can change as software and drivers are updated.
That test setup matters: these are plugged-in reference settings, not battery-mode recommendations. ASUS’s page identifies the device as the ROG Ally X (2024), not the later ROG Xbox Ally X (2025). Don’t assume the two generations share these specific test results.

Should you choose 1080p or 720p?
Try 1080p first if the game runs smoothly at settings you find acceptable and you prefer a sharper image. If performance is uneven or you want to reduce the rendering workload, try 720p. RSR can upscale a game rendered below the display’s native resolution; it won’t upscale a game already running at 1080p. A lower-resolution image may look softer, so compare visual clarity as well as frame-rate consistency.
If a game supports FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), try its in-game upscaling option first. FSR renders at a lower resolution and upscales the result. RSR is a driver-level alternative that can work across more games, but requires the game to run below native resolution.

How to tune performance on either ROG Ally
- Update before changing settings. Install available Windows, Armoury Crate, graphics-driver and game updates. ASUS notes that graphics-driver releases can include optimizations for new games.
- Choose a power mode for the way you’re playing. Start with Performance mode when balancing performance and battery life. Switch to Turbo when prioritizing frame rate; plugging in can allow greater power use on supported models.
- Reduce graphics settings in steps. If the game struggles, move from Ultra toward High, Medium or Low rather than assuming the handheld can’t run it. ASUS recommends checking performance with Armoury Crate’s built-in Real-Time Monitor as you adjust.
- Try upscaling if needed. Enable FSR in the game when available. Otherwise, consider RSR and set the game below the display’s 1080p native resolution.
- Revisit the settings after updates. A major game or driver update can change performance, so check the result again rather than treating one configuration as permanent.
Does the original ROG Ally need different settings?
The game table reflects ASUS’s Ally X (2024), not a matched comparison against the original ROG Ally. The cited sources do not establish a current, independently tested settings matrix for both models. Start with a lower preset or resolution if your original Ally does not hold a comfortable frame rate, then tune using the steps above.
For the original 16GB Ally, ASUS says allocating 6GB of VRAM may help some games, depending on the title. It is not a universal performance fix. ASUS says this change is probably unnecessary for most Ally X units, so avoid treating it as a default tweak for every model.

What frame rate should you target?
Favor a stable, responsive experience over a high but inconsistent peak. ASUS’s May 2026 AAA-gaming guidance says many AAA games can be playable around 30 FPS at 720p on the standard Xbox Ally, while higher-performance models including Ally X can often reach 45–60 FPS or more at 1080p with upscaling and reduced settings around Medium. Those are broad expectations, not guarantees for a particular game or proof that every title will hit those figures.
For more detail on mode selection and graphics adjustments, ASUS’s October 15, 2025 guide, How to boost gaming performance on the ROG Ally or ROG Xbox Ally, describes Performance mode as a balance between performance and battery life and Turbo as the mode for maximum power. Your result will still depend on the game, device generation, power source and software state.
