There is no one best gaming headset for everyone. For sound quality and a strong all-round feature set, the Audeze Maxwell 2 is the leading premium choice; its roughly 560 g weight is a serious trade-off. Competitive FPS players should also consider the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro, while players switching between several systems may get more value from a Logitech G Astro A50 X or SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni. For Xbox on a budget, look at the Xbox Wireless Headset; for a simple wired setup, consider the HyperX Cloud III.

Gaming headset recommendations at a glance

Headset Best for Connection and platform notes Price and battery Main trade-off
Audeze Maxwell 2 Sound-first gaming, music and cinematic games 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C and 3.5 mm; choose the PlayStation or Xbox version to match your console PC Gamer reported about $329 for PlayStation and $349 for Xbox at review time; 80-plus hours reported by PC Gamer Approximately 560 g; expensive and potentially tiring for long sessions
Razer BlackShark V3 Pro Competitive FPS and players who want ANC HyperSpeed wireless; distinct PlayStation and Xbox versions are listed $249.99 on Razer’s U.S. listings when checked; battery life not stated in the cited sources Less oriented toward natural, audiophile-style listening than the Maxwell 2; confirm console variant
Logitech G Astro A50 X Multi-console and PC setups that benefit from switching Base-station setup; confirm the exact model and video/audio routing needs before purchase A50 Gen 5 was listed at a $299.99 U.S. suggested price in a 2024 Xbox Wire guide; A50 X price and battery not stated there Base station, cabling and price are hard to justify for a single-platform setup
SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni Flexible routing, ANC and battery convenience Feature-rich base-station ecosystem; confirm exact platform support and model Price and battery runtime not stated in the cited sources; Xbox’s $599.99 listing is for the different Nova Elite, not the Omni More ecosystem complexity and cost than a straightforward headset
Xbox Wireless Headset Xbox owners seeking a lower-cost wireless option Direct Xbox pairing and Bluetooth 5.3; features on other devices depend on connection method $109.99 U.S. suggested launch price; up to 20 hours, per Xbox Less refined audio and microphone than the premium alternatives
HyperX Cloud III Wired gaming and buyers who do not want a battery Check the exact edition and connectors for your device; the wired route is simple but lacks wireless convenience Price and battery not stated in the cited sources; it is wired No wireless freedom or simultaneous Bluetooth audio
HyperX CloudX Stinger 2 Core Entry-level wired Xbox setups Choose the Xbox-specific CloudX model $39.99 on Xbox’s catalog when crawled; wired Fewer premium features and no wireless convenience

Rankings depend on what a reviewer values. RTINGS names the Maxwell 2 its top gaming and wireless gaming headset, but a ranking cannot tell you whether its weight, price or platform version suits your setup. Compare the use cases below rather than treating any “best overall” label as universal. RTINGS’ gaming-headset guide and wireless guide explain their current picks and alternatives.

Which headset fits your games and priorities?

Best sound-first premium pick: Audeze Maxwell 2

The Maxwell 2 is the strongest candidate if you want a headset for games and general listening, and you value fidelity more than a featherweight design. PC Gamer lists 90 mm planar-magnetic drivers, Bluetooth 5.3, 2.4 GHz wireless, USB-C and 3.5 mm connections, more than 80 hours of battery life, and a weight of about 560 g. Those specifications describe the product; the driver size and advertised frequency range alone do not prove sound quality. PC Gamer’s Maxwell 2 review and TechRadar’s review provide review context.

Choose the console version carefully. PC Gamer’s review-era prices were approximately $329 for PlayStation and $349 for Xbox, while Xbox’s catalog listed an Audeze Maxwell at $329 when crawled; prices and specific model availability can change. Check Audeze’s product page for compatibility details and current configuration. If comfort is uncertain, try it with a retailer return policy rather than assuming a heavy headset will suit a long session.

Best competitive alternative: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro

For FPS players, the BlackShark V3 Pro emphasizes low-latency wireless, competitive tuning, hybrid active noise cancellation and a detachable 12 mm full-band microphone. Razer listed the standard, Xbox and PlayStation variants at $249.99 on its U.S. shop when checked. It is the alternative to investigate if you want a more competition-focused feature set and do not want the Maxwell 2’s weight; it is not a guarantee of better results for every game or listener. Start at Razer’s headset listings and verify the console version. Razer also describes platform variants on its console compatibility page.

Best for switching between systems: Logitech G Astro A50 X

The A50 X makes most sense when you regularly move among consoles and PC and will actually use its switching and base-station features. Xbox Wire described PLAYSYNC audio switching across Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC for the A50 Gen 5, and listed that model at a $299.99 U.S. suggested price in 2024. That is not a current price for the A50 X, and the models should not be treated as identical. See Xbox Wire’s A50 Gen 5 guide and Logitech’s A50 X page. If you use only one console, a simpler dongle headset may be better value.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Best feature-rich base-station alternative: SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni

Consider the Nova Pro Omni if routing options, ANC and battery convenience matter more to you than a simple plug-in setup. RTINGS identifies it as an alternative for buyers prioritizing ANC and swappable batteries, while noting the trade-off against the Astro A50 X’s HDMI 2.1 passthrough. The Xbox catalog’s $599.99 figure is for the Arctis Nova Elite, a different product, so it is not a price for the Omni. For current model details, see RTINGS’ wireless comparison and SteelSeries’ Nova Pro Wireless support guide.

Best Xbox value: Xbox Wireless Headset

The refreshed Xbox Wireless Headset is a sensible first stop for Xbox owners who want direct console pairing and Bluetooth without paying premium-headset prices. Xbox lists Bluetooth 5.3, voice isolation, auto-mute, Dolby Atmos at no additional cost and up to 20 hours of battery life; its U.S. suggested launch price was $109.99. Runtime depends on use, and Dolby Atmos features depend on supported content and hardware. See Xbox’s announcement for those qualifications and the current catalog for current listing information.

Best wired value: HyperX Cloud III or CloudX Stinger 2 Core

A wired headset is a rational choice if you sit near your PC or console and would rather avoid charging, wireless pairing and battery aging. HyperX’s Cloud III is the more general wired recommendation here; for an inexpensive Xbox-specific option, Xbox listed the CloudX Stinger 2 Core at $39.99 when crawled. That catalog price is not a guaranteed current price. Check the connector and exact edition on HyperX’s headset listings before ordering.

Choose by platform before choosing by sound

PC

  • For game audio, use the headset’s 2.4 GHz USB dongle when available; it is generally a better latency choice than Bluetooth. Bluetooth remains convenient for calls and other devices but may introduce gaming delay or microphone compromises.
  • Check whether your desktop has Bluetooth before planning to use it, and whether the headset supports simultaneous game audio and phone audio in the exact connection mode you need.
  • USB audio and 3.5 mm analog are different paths: USB enables digital audio and may expose software features, while analog output depends on the PC’s audio hardware. A wired analog connection can pick up electrical noise on some systems.
  • Confirm where Windows routes game audio, voice chat and microphone input. Some headsets expose separate devices or need an app for EQ, firmware or routing; do not assume all features are available without the software.

PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro

  • Use a headset explicitly compatible with PlayStation wireless audio, usually through its supported USB dongle or base station. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones generally do not connect directly to PS5 for game audio without an approved intermediary.
  • Tempest 3D AudioTech can work with compatible headphones, but spatial processing is not a substitute for good imaging and may sound different by preference.
  • Check whether sidetone, microphone monitoring and game/chat balance work in the connection mode you plan to use. A feature advertised for PC may not carry over to the console.
  • If a base station connects by USB or HDMI, verify the cabling and video requirements. An HDMI switching setup can affect routing and may complicate HDR, refresh rate or VRR; confirm support for your display chain before buying.
  • Coverage of PS5 options includes SteelSeries, Audeze and Razer models, but recommendations differ depending on whether sound quality, comfort or console features are weighted most. See GamesRadar’s PS5 headset coverage.

Xbox Series X and Series S

  • Xbox supports its Xbox Wireless protocol; a generic USB wireless dongle is not automatically compatible. Look for explicit Xbox support or a model-specific Xbox version.
  • A wired headset with a 3.5 mm plug can connect through an Xbox controller. Wireless compatibility varies by headset and may use Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, USB-C or a Windows adapter depending on device and mode.
  • Dolby Atmos availability does not mean every game uses it. Xbox says supported content and hardware requirements apply; check the specific headset and content before treating it as a universal benefit.
  • Confirm that game/chat balance controls work on Xbox itself. Xbox’s headset guidance explains wired controller connection and compatible wireless routes.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

  • Bluetooth audio, USB-C dongles and microphone support can differ between handheld and docked use. Verify the exact headset model and Switch generation rather than assuming a broad “Switch compatible” label covers every feature.
  • Check whether voice chat runs through the game, a phone app or another service; headset microphone support is not the same as in-game chat support.
  • In handheld mode, make sure a USB-C dongle does not obstruct the port or interfere with how you hold the console. In docked mode, check which USB connection the dongle requires.
  • Assume EQ, ANC controls, simultaneous Bluetooth audio and chat mixing may be limited unless the manufacturer confirms them for that exact platform and connection.

Wireless or wired: which trade-off is worth it?

Factor Wireless Wired
Movement and setup Freedom from a cable; useful on a sofa or when moving around Cable can snag or wear, but setup is usually straightforward
Gaming latency A well-implemented 2.4 GHz dongle is typically preferable to Bluetooth for latency-sensitive play Direct cable connection avoids wireless latency and pairing
Power and longevity Requires charging; the built-in battery will age, and replacement options vary No battery charging or battery degradation to manage
Extra features May offer wireless controls, Bluetooth, app features and simultaneous connections Often simpler and less expensive, with fewer routing and wireless features
Failure points Pairing, dongle placement, radio interference and firmware can cause problems Cable wear, tangling, controller-dependent console audio and possible PC analog noise

Wireless does not inherently mean worse sound. The connection and implementation matter: use 2.4 GHz for game audio when available, and treat Bluetooth primarily as a convenience connection unless its latency suits your game. For daily wireless use, check whether the headset has USB-C charging, a wired fallback and a replaceable or swappable battery. A dock is convenient but takes desk space; advertised battery runtime changes with volume, ANC, Bluetooth, lighting and microphone processing.

What makes a headset sound good in games?

Imaging is not the same as soundstage

Imaging is how precisely a headset places a sound—such as footsteps to the left or behind you. Soundstage describes the perceived width or space of the presentation. A large-sounding headset is not necessarily more precise, and no specification number can settle how well a particular model performs. For competitive play, clear imaging and intelligible midrange often matter more than a dramatic bass boost.

Do not shop by driver size or frequency range alone

The Maxwell 2’s 90 mm planar-magnetic drivers and listed 10 Hz–50 kHz response are specifications, not proof that it will sound better to every person. Planar designs can deliver detailed sound but may contribute to weight. Frequency-response numbers are not a reliable quality ranking, and an oversized bass emphasis can mask footsteps or dialogue. Treble that seems detailed at first can also become tiring over a long session.

EQ and virtual surround are tools, not guarantees

An EQ preset can reduce boomy bass or emphasize a range you want to hear, but aggressive processing can distort the sound. Virtual surround may help some players perceive space and sound unnatural to others. Try the headset’s normal stereo mode first, then compare processing in the games you actually play.

Microphone quality and comfort deserve equal attention

Judge the microphone by speech, not its marketing label

Listen for clear speech, controlled plosives, and how much keyboard, fan or room noise reaches teammates. Boom position, mute state, input selection and noise suppression all affect the result. The Maxwell 2 has a detachable hypercardioid boom and internal beamforming; the BlackShark V3 Pro has a detachable full-band microphone. Those design descriptions do not establish which sounds better in your room. Microphone performance may also change between USB, 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and 3.5 mm modes, so check the mode you will actually use.

Comfort is more than weight

Weight is a useful warning sign, not a complete comfort score. Headband pressure, clamp force, ear-cup depth, internal width, adjustability and how weight is distributed all matter. Glasses can make a tight seal or shallow pad uncomfortable at the temples; leatherette generally isolates well but can feel warmer than fabric or velour. If you play for two to six hours, look for independent comfort observations, replaceable pads and a return policy. The Maxwell 2’s approximately 560 g weight is particularly important to assess before committing.

ANC, isolation and battery: features to buy only if you need them

When ANC helps

Active noise cancellation can reduce steady sounds such as fans and HVAC noise, making it useful in a noisy room. It does not automatically improve positional audio or microphone noise rejection. ANC can add processing and battery use, and some listeners dislike the pressure sensation. In a quiet room, passive isolation or a lighter headset may be preferable; open-back headphones can sound more open but leak sound and provide little isolation.

Battery management

  • Treat battery-life figures as usage-dependent, not a guaranteed session length. High volume, ANC, simultaneous Bluetooth, lighting and voice processing can reduce runtime.
  • USB-C charging and a wired mode provide practical flexibility, but only if the headset supports audio over that wired connection.
  • A hot-swappable battery can prevent downtime for a daily player, though it adds ecosystem cost and complexity.
  • Check whether the manufacturer offers battery replacement or repair; built-in batteries eventually age.

Compatibility checklist before buying

  • Exact device: Identify the console, PC or Switch generation you will use, not just the broad platform family.
  • Exact headset version: Match Xbox and PlayStation variants explicitly; shared product names do not guarantee shared wireless support.
  • Connection method: Confirm whether you need a USB dongle, Xbox Wireless, controller 3.5 mm, Bluetooth, USB-C or a base station.
  • Microphone and chat: Verify that the mic works on your device and that game/chat balance is supported in your chosen mode.
  • Feature access: Check whether EQ, ANC, sidetone, firmware updates and simultaneous Bluetooth require a Windows or mobile app.
  • Ports and video chain: Count available USB ports. For HDMI base stations, confirm that your display chain supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR you use.
  • Comfort and upkeep: Consider weight, pad material, glasses fit, replacement parts and the retailer’s return policy.

Quick setup and troubleshooting

USB dongle or base station

  1. Connect the included dongle or base station to a USB port supported by the headset. For a console, use the manufacturer’s stated port and mode; do not assume a generic dongle works on Xbox.
  2. Set the headset as the audio output and microphone input on the device. On PC, check Windows sound settings and the selected input/output in Discord or the game.
  3. If audio drops out, move the dongle to another USB port, ideally away from the back of a metal PC case and USB 3.0 devices; then test again.

Microphone sounds muffled or does not work

  1. Check mute status and position the boom near the corner of your mouth, not directly in front of it.
  2. Confirm the correct headset microphone is selected in the operating system, game or chat app, and check the console’s chat settings.
  3. Temporarily disable aggressive noise suppression or processing to determine whether it is reducing speech clarity.
  4. If the mic works over one connection but not another, check the headset’s mode-specific feature support; Bluetooth and analog connections may behave differently from USB or 2.4 GHz.

Firmware and app issues

Use the manufacturer’s official app and support instructions for firmware updates, EQ or routing. Features may require a PC or phone even when the headset itself works on console. Avoid interrupting an update, and verify which features are saved to the headset versus controlled only by the app.

Make the final choice by your main constraint

  • Buy the Audeze Maxwell 2 if sound-first performance across games and media matters most and its weight is comfortable for you. Skip it if you are sensitive to heavy headsets or want the simplest low-cost setup.
  • Buy the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro if competitive play, low-latency wireless, ANC and a detachable mic are priorities. Verify the Xbox or PlayStation version before ordering.
  • Buy the Astro A50 X or investigate the Nova Pro Omni if you will use their base-station routing, system switching or battery features. Skip the ecosystem premium if you mainly play on one device.
  • Buy the Xbox Wireless Headset if you play on Xbox and want direct pairing and Bluetooth at a lower price than the premium picks.
  • Choose a wired HyperX if you are desk-bound, budget-conscious or simply do not want to charge another device. Confirm the edition and connector for your platform.
