For most PC players, the best monitor target for Apex Legends is a 27-inch 1440p display at 240Hz or 360Hz. A good 240Hz IPS monitor is the sensible value choice; 360Hz makes more sense if your PC can sustain very high frame rates. For a premium no-compromise option, the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W offers 1440p at 540Hz or a specialized 720p at 720Hz. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players should shop for reliable 120Hz support, not 360Hz.

Quick picks for Apex Legends

Monitor or category Best for Resolution and refresh rate Panel and connection Main trade-off
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W Premium competitive PC setup 2560×1440 at 540Hz, or 1280×720 at 720Hz Tandem OLED; DisplayPort 2.1 Its highest refresh modes are specialist options: they need a PC capable of matching them, and 720Hz uses a major resolution compromise.
Alienware AW2725DF 1440p/360Hz OLED gaming over DisplayPort 2560×1440 at 360Hz over DisplayPort QD-OLED; VRR support Dell lists 1440p at up to 144Hz over HDMI, so use DisplayPort for 360Hz.
1440p/240Hz IPS monitor Value, mixed gaming and work, or avoiding OLED care 2560×1440 at 240Hz IPS; confirm the model’s supported inputs and VRR range Performance, brightness, warranty and price vary by model; compare current independent measurements before buying.
1080p/240Hz or 360Hz esports monitor Players prioritizing frame rate and lower GPU load Typically 1920×1080; maximum refresh depends on model and input Often a smaller 24–25-inch display Less sharp than 1440p at a similar screen size.
120–165Hz monitor with suitable HDMI support PS5 or Xbox Series X|S Choose a model supporting 120Hz at the resolution you intend to use Check HDMI specifications and console compatibility Apex’s console Performance mode targets 120 FPS; a higher refresh rating does not raise that game-mode limit.

There is no responsible single budget winner here without live pricing and availability. The 1440p gaming monitor category includes models such as the LG 27GR83Q-B and ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS; compare their current prices, input-lag and motion results, warranty, and port limits rather than assuming either is the best value.

What matters most for Apex

Refresh rate that matches your actual frame rate

Higher refresh rates let the display update more often and can make moving targets easier to follow. The refresh interval is about 6.94ms at 144Hz, 4.17ms at 240Hz, 2.78ms at 360Hz and 1.85ms at 540Hz. These are intervals between display refreshes—not total system latency or a promise that you will react that much faster. The jump from 60Hz to 144Hz is generally more substantial in practice than the step from 240Hz to 360Hz.

For many competitive players, 240Hz is a practical sweet spot. Consider 360Hz when your PC regularly delivers frame rates in that range with stable frame times. A 540Hz display is a specialist purchase for systems that can exploit it, not a substitute for a capable PC.

Input lag, pixel response and motion clarity are different

Pixel response time describes how quickly pixels change between shades. Display input lag measures the delay before a signal appears on screen. End-to-end mouse-to-photon latency also includes the mouse, game, CPU, GPU and display pipeline. A manufacturer’s “0.02ms” or “0.03ms” panel figure is not a total-latency measurement.

Fast pixel transitions can reduce smearing, but a headline “1ms” label alone does not establish good motion performance: overdrive can introduce bright inverse ghosting, and results vary with refresh rate and settings. Prefer independent reviews that report response-time behavior and input lag separately, such as RTINGS’ monitor comparison data.

VRR helps when frame rates fluctuate

FreeSync, G-SYNC Compatible and HDMI Forum VRR can reduce tearing when frame rates vary within the monitor’s supported range. Check the VRR range and whether it works through the input you plan to use. VRR does not make an unstable system consistent, and a 360Hz screen cannot deliver its full advantage when the game frequently runs far below that rate.

Resolution, size and GPU load

A 27-inch 1440p monitor is a strong balance of sharpness and performance demand. A 24–25-inch 1080p screen remains reasonable if you want lower GPU load, sit close, or prioritize competitive frame rates over pixel density. 4K is usually a poor reason by itself to choose a monitor for Apex; it makes more sense when you also value sharpness for other games or productivity.

EA’s recommended PC requirements target a smooth 60 FPS experience, not 240 or 360 FPS. Running the game, sustaining 144 FPS and exploiting 360Hz are different performance goals. Actual results depend on CPU and GPU, resolution, settings, cooling, and what is happening in a match.

Ports, brightness and ergonomics

Confirm that the specific input supports the advertised resolution and refresh rate. The Alienware AW2725DF reaches 1440p/360Hz through DisplayPort, while Dell specifies up to 144Hz at 1440p over HDMI. Newer high-bandwidth modes may also require a compatible GPU output and cable. On console, check the monitor’s HDMI support at the chosen resolution and 120Hz.

Consider room lighting and how you use the screen beyond Apex. OLED’s deep blacks can be less impressive amid reflections or bright ambient light, while a bright IPS screen may be more comfortable in a sunlit room. Height adjustment, tilt, swivel, pivot and VESA mounting matter during long sessions; verify the stand and mount features on the exact model.

Best high-end option: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W

The 27-inch ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W combines a 2560×1440 mode at 540Hz with a 1280×720 mode at 720Hz. ASUS lists DisplayPort 2.1, VRR compatibility and a 0.02ms gray-to-gray response specification on its official product page. The response figure is a manufacturer specification, not end-to-end latency.

Who should choose it

  • You have a high-end PC and can sustain exceptionally high Apex frame rates.
  • You want one premium OLED display for competitive play and games where 1440p contrast and image quality matter.
  • You value DisplayPort 2.1 and the option to switch between high-resolution and extreme-refresh modes.

Who should skip it

Do not buy it just for the 720Hz number. That mode runs at 720p, a substantial loss of sharpness from native 1440p, and it only helps if the PC can deliver a suitably high, stable frame rate. If your system is usually around 180–240 FPS, a 1440p/240Hz IPS model is a more balanced use of money; if it can push much higher, a 1440p/360Hz display is still a more attainable step for many setups. Current price and availability should be checked with the seller before purchase.

Best 1440p/360Hz OLED option: Alienware AW2725DF

The Alienware AW2725DF is a 27-inch 2560×1440 QD-OLED monitor that supports 360Hz over DisplayPort and VRR. Dell lists a 0.03ms gray-to-gray response specification; independent coverage describes its motion response as near-instantaneous and input lag as low. Those findings are distinct from the manufacturer’s pixel-response figure. See Dell’s product specifications and the RTINGS review.

This is the straightforward premium choice if you want native 1440p at 360Hz rather than paying for 540/720Hz dual-mode flexibility. Use DisplayPort for 360Hz: Dell lists the HDMI connection at up to 144Hz at 1440p. Dell’s published specification sheet describes three-year Advanced Exchange service and Premium Panel Exchange coverage that includes OLED burn-in, but warranty terms can vary by country and purchase date; verify the current terms where you buy. The source specification sheet is available here.

Best balance for many players: 1440p/240Hz IPS

A 1440p/240Hz IPS display is often the more sensible competitive upgrade: 240Hz already represents a large step over 60Hz or 144Hz, while IPS avoids OLED’s burn-in-management concerns and can offer better sustained full-screen brightness for less. It also suits people who keep desktop windows or static work applications open for long periods.

Compare current models such as the LG 27GR83Q-B and ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS through independent category coverage, but do not treat category inclusion as proof that either is the cheapest or best buy today. Check measured input lag, overdrive behavior, brightness, VRR range, warranty, refresh limits by port and live price. RTINGS’ 1440p gaming monitor guide is a starting point for model comparisons.

Best monitor approach for PS5 and Xbox

Apex Legends supports a 120 FPS Performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S when connected to a 120Hz display with a suitable HDMI setup. EA’s Performance mode notes explain the feature. Enable 120Hz output in the console settings and select Apex’s Performance graphics mode; check the display’s supported resolution at 120Hz and use an appropriate HDMI port and cable.

A 240Hz or 360Hz monitor will not make console Apex run at 240 or 360 FPS. For console-only play, a well-reviewed 120–165Hz monitor with the right HDMI support is generally sufficient. A faster PC monitor can still make sense if you expect to switch to PC later.

Choose refresh rate by your real Apex performance

Typical stable Apex frame rate Practical monitor range How to think about it
About 60–100 FPS 120Hz or 144Hz Prioritize a good panel and stable performance before paying for extreme refresh.
About 120–180 FPS 165Hz, 180Hz or 240Hz 240Hz leaves useful headroom if the PC can approach it; it is not necessary to hold exactly 240 FPS at all times.
About 180–280 FPS 240Hz or 360Hz Choose based on how consistently the system maintains frame times and whether the higher-refresh model is worth its cost.
Consistently above 300 FPS 360Hz; consider 540Hz as a specialist option Higher refresh can be useful, but gains narrow and the PC must deliver matching performance.

These are practical buying ranges, not hard technical thresholds. A stable frame rate and frame-time behavior matter more than buying a panel whose maximum refresh is far beyond what the system can produce.

Set up Apex for a high-refresh monitor

  1. Connect through the right port. Use the monitor input and a compatible cable that support the resolution and refresh rate you bought. For the AW2725DF’s 360Hz mode, use DisplayPort.
  2. Set the refresh rate in your operating system. Select the monitor’s highest intended mode in the display settings, then confirm the monitor’s on-screen display reports the expected input and refresh rate.
  3. Enable VRR if you want it. Turn on the monitor’s Adaptive-Sync/VRR setting and enable the corresponding supported option in your GPU software. Check that it is active over your chosen connection.
  4. Show your actual FPS. EA says you can use Apex’s Performance Display or Steam’s In-game FPS Counter. Watch the rate during real matches, not only in the lobby.
  5. Cap based on observed performance and VRR behavior. EA’s PC instructions use the platform Library → Apex Legends → Properties or View Properties → Launch Options / Advanced launch options path. Add +fps_max <required frame rate>; for example, +fps_max 240. Choose a cap based on stable performance and your VRR approach rather than copying the monitor’s maximum automatically. See EA’s FPS instructions.

OLED or IPS for Apex?

Consideration OLED IPS
Motion and contrast Very fast pixel transitions and excellent contrast can make motion and dark scenes look clear. Good models can deliver strong motion performance with suitable overdrive; contrast is generally less dramatic.
Static content Long periods of static HUDs, desktop windows or taskbars can contribute to image retention or burn-in over time. Generally a more comfortable choice for heavy static desktop use.
Care Panel-care features reduce risk but do not remove it. Use the manufacturer’s pixel refresh, screen shift, logo dimming and sleep settings. No OLED-specific pixel-care routine.
Brightness and room Strong blacks in controlled lighting; reflections and bright ambient light can reduce the perceived black-level advantage, and sustained full-screen brightness can be lower. A bright IPS model may be more practical in a sunlit room.
Value Premium motion and contrast, with warranty and usage-pattern considerations. Often a stronger price-to-performance choice for 1440p/240Hz and mixed work use.

OLED is not guaranteed to burn in quickly: risk depends on usage, brightness, duty cycle and static content. It is a poor fit if the same desktop or application stays visible for many hours daily and you do not want to use panel-care routines. Check the exact model’s warranty coverage for your region.

FAQ

Can Apex run at 540 FPS?

The monitor can refresh at 540Hz in its specified mode, but that does not mean Apex will render at 540 FPS on your PC. Whether the system can approach that rate depends on hardware, settings and in-game conditions; do not buy the monitor on the assumption that the game will match its maximum refresh.

Should I use G-SYNC, FreeSync or VRR?

Use the variable-refresh feature supported by your monitor, GPU and connection if you want to reduce tearing when frame rate fluctuates. Check the monitor’s VRR range and confirm the feature works through the input you use.
