For most buyers choosing among 2023-era models, the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro is the best all-round gaming router: it pairs Wi-Fi 6 with a 2.5Gbps port, gaming controls and AiMesh expansion. Choose the TP-Link Archer GX90 for tri-band Wi-Fi 6, the Netgear XR1000 for DumaOS traffic controls, or a premium ASUS or TP-Link model if you have a large, busy network or many wired devices. These are recommendations for the 2023 generation, not a claim that these are the best routers to buy in 2026. A router can help manage congestion inside your home, but it cannot make a distant game server respond faster or repair poor ISP routing.

AX5700, AX6600 and AX11000 are aggregate Wi-Fi class labels, not promises of the speed one console or PC will receive. Prices and model availability change; a manufacturer listing does not prove that a product is in stock. Hardware revisions and features can vary by region.
What a gaming router can—and cannot—improve
Gaming is more sensitive to consistent latency, jitter and packet loss than to a router’s headline throughput. The router matters most when local traffic is competing for limited bandwidth: for example, a game may become less responsive while another device uploads video, downloads a large game or runs cloud backup. Quality-of-service (QoS) controls can prioritize a device or traffic type, allocate bandwidth and manage queues so uploads and downloads are less likely to hold packets up.

This queueing problem is often called bufferbloat. A router cannot raise the internet speed in your ISP plan, shorten the physical route to a game server or fix poor ISP peering. If your existing router already provides reliable coverage and handles household traffic without latency spikes, buying a gaming-branded model may barely change your baseline ping.

- Wired play: Ethernet is usually the best choice for a competitive PC or console. It avoids Wi-Fi interference and makes the local connection more predictable.
- Wireless play: Placement, distance, walls, neighboring networks and your device’s Wi-Fi capabilities can matter more than the router’s advertised class.
- Busy connection: QoS and congestion controls are most useful when traffic elsewhere in the home makes latency climb.
- ISP or server problems: A new router cannot fix an overloaded cable segment, weak upload service, cellular or satellite latency, or a distant server.
Best overall: ASUS RT-AX86U Pro
The RT-AX86U Pro is the most balanced pick in this 2023-era shortlist for a typical gaming household: it combines Wi-Fi 6, a 2.5Gbps port, gaming-oriented QoS, security features and AiMesh support without moving up to a large ROG flagship. ASUS identifies it as an AX5700 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 gaming router and lists AiMesh support on its US router selector.
Independent testing of the original RT-AX86U, not necessarily the Pro, praised its throughput, gaming tools, customization, port aggregation and security. Treat that review as evidence about the predecessor rather than a direct test of the Pro: Tom’s Guide’s RT-AX86U review.
Who should choose it
- Gamers who want one capable Wi-Fi 6 router with gaming controls and a path to expand coverage using AiMesh.
- Households with one or more wired gaming devices that can benefit from the router’s 2.5Gbps connectivity, provided the rest of the network supports the desired speed.
- Buyers who want a flexible general-purpose router rather than a device chosen mainly for a large Wi-Fi class number.
Who should skip it
Look elsewhere if you need Wi-Fi 7, several multi-gigabit wired clients or whole-home coverage from a single router in a large or obstructed home. ASUS’s current US page showed a “from $249.99” price signal; check the live offer rather than treating that as a guaranteed price or a historical 2023 cost. ASUS value page.

Best TP-Link choice: Archer GX90
The Archer GX90 suits buyers who want a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router with gaming-oriented features. TP-Link describes it as AX6600, lists OneMesh compatibility and one USB 3.0 port, and markets its third band for gaming use. See TP-Link’s US GX90 page.
Tri-band capacity can help distribute wireless clients, especially in a busy home, but it does not make a faraway console immune to walls or interference. The gaming band is useful only if the device connects to it and receives a reliable signal. If your gaming PC or console is wired, the GX90’s extra wireless capacity may matter less than port layout, QoS and price. Confirm the US hardware revision and firmware feature set before buying.
Best premium option: ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro
The GT-AX11000 Pro is for households that can use its additional capacity and connectivity: think many simultaneous clients, multiple high-throughput devices or multi-gigabit networking. ASUS describes it as an AX11000 Wi-Fi 6 tri-band model with AiMesh, enhanced hardware, a 2.5G port and a 10G port, alongside gaming features and network security. Check the exact US revision and port roles on ASUS’s Wi-Fi 6 router listings.

Its advantages are wasted if your internet plan, modem or ONT, switch and gaming device all top out at 1Gbps—or if the only problem is a single wired console on an otherwise quiet network. It is also a poor fit if compact size or simple setup matters more than configuration options. No reliable current official price is established here, so compare live offers rather than assuming the model is a bargain.
Best for traffic-management controls: Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR1000
The XR1000’s case is its DumaOS 3.0 software, with congestion control, bandwidth allocation and traffic prioritization. Netgear advertises ping reduction of “up to 93%” in a particular test setup. That is a manufacturer result, not a promise of lower ping for every household, game or ISP: Netgear’s XR1000 page.
Independent coverage found the XR1000 useful for gaming, but Tom’s Guide reported that it was slower than the ASUS RT-AX86U and lacked some features gamers might expect: Tom’s Guide’s XR1000 review. Choose it if you specifically value DumaOS controls and will tune them against real measurements, not just for the gaming label. No reliable current official price is established here. Check account, cloud and subscription requirements for the features you plan to use; they should not be assumed from the product category.

Best for many wired devices: TP-Link Archer AX11000
Tom’s Hardware describes the Archer AX11000 as a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 gaming router with an integrated eight-port switch, making it a relevant option when wired devices are the reason you are shopping. The same review called its result a “mixed bag,” so its high-end specifications are not evidence that it will deliver lower ping than a simpler router. Read Tom’s Hardware’s review and confirm current availability and port needs before choosing it.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000
The original GT-AX11000 is a Wi-Fi 6 tri-band gaming router with ROG optimization. ASUS advertises up to a 90% reduction in peak ping in a particular test using GameFirst V, Game Boost and WTFast on a 10Mbps-down/2Mbps-up connection with competing traffic. That figure is conditional and is not a general-world guarantee. Product details are at ASUS ROG’s GT-AX11000 page. Tom’s Guide listed a $449 launch-price signal; it is not a current price: Tom’s Guide’s review. Because the Pro model is newer within this Wi-Fi 6 family, the original is most defensible when its actual price and features make it a better fit.
Conventional Wi-Fi 6 router
If you mostly play over Ethernet and do not need a gaming dashboard, a good ordinary Wi-Fi 6 router may do the job for less. Gaming features are largely software controls—QoS, traffic shaping, device prioritization and network monitoring—not magic properties exclusive to a gaming product.

Wired access point or mesh system
For a large, multi-story home or dead zones, a wired access point or mesh system with wired backhaul can solve coverage more effectively than replacing a working router with a larger gaming model. A wired connection between mesh nodes avoids making wireless backhaul compete for the same air time as client traffic.
Newer routers
Wi-Fi 6 was mainstream in 2023. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band, which requires a compatible client and generally has shorter effective reach through walls than lower-frequency bands. Wi-Fi 7 hardware has since emerged, so a 2026 buyer purchasing new should compare current models separately rather than treating this 2023 shortlist as the latest generation. In every case, the router and gaming device must support the same Wi-Fi band and standard to use it.
Choose by your home and connection
- Wired PC or console: Start with Ethernet, router reliability, enough LAN ports and QoS only if the connection gets congested. A costly gaming model adds little when the wired path is stable and the household is not saturating the connection.
- Wireless gamer in a small apartment: A conventional Wi-Fi 6 router may be enough. Favor clean 5GHz performance and sensible placement; check that your client supports any band you intend to use.
- Large or busy household: Consider tri-band capacity, QoS with upload management, enough wired ports and wired-backhaul mesh or access points where coverage is difficult.
- Multi-gigabit internet: Verify the entire path: modem or ONT, router WAN and LAN ports, switch, and client network adapter. A high AX class does not overcome a 1Gbps bottleneck at any wired link.
- Competitive play: Prioritize Ethernet, stable ping and low jitter under load, plus ISP quality and routing. Do not add a VPN or game-route optimizer unless testing shows that it improves your route; it can also add delay.
- Limited budget: Try Ethernet, better router placement and a capable ordinary Wi-Fi 6 router before paying extra for gaming branding.
Measure first, then tune the router
Do not judge an upgrade from a single idle ping reading. Record a baseline on the same device and connection, then compare latency at rest and while the network is busy. Use the game’s network statistics or another consistent measurement and note jitter and packet loss as well as ping.

- Update firmware. Install the router’s current firmware using its administration interface or official app. Menu names vary by model.
- Place it carefully. Put the router centrally where practical, off the floor, away from dense obstructions and metal cabinets, and clear of common sources of interference such as microwave ovens.
- Wire the gaming device. Connect the PC or console by Ethernet where practical; use Wi-Fi only if cabling is inconvenient or impossible.
- Record the baseline. Note idle ping, ping during download and upload, jitter, packet loss and in-game network readings before changing QoS.
- Set realistic QoS limits. If your router asks for upload or download capacity, use measurements that reflect your actual connection. A traffic shaper may deliberately cap peak throughput to keep queues short.
- Prioritize selectively. Prioritize the gaming device or relevant traffic, then test while another household device uploads and downloads. Avoid assuming every “game acceleration” option helps.
- Compare results and revise. Keep changes that improve latency under load without an unacceptable speed loss. If results worsen or do not improve, remove or adjust the settings and test again.
- Check for double NAT. If an ISP gateway remains in router mode while a second router is added, strict NAT, port-forwarding trouble, voice-chat issues or UPnP conflicts can follow. Prefer ISP bridge or passthrough mode, or set the second router to access-point mode. Use double NAT only when necessary and with its limitations understood.
If latency remains poor when the home network is idle and under load, the cause may lie with the ISP, modem or route to the game server rather than the router. A high-end router cannot repair a damaged coaxial or fiber installation, a saturated ISP segment or weak upstream capacity.
