The Creative Stage Pro is the sensible budget pick, and Sony’s HT-A7000 remains a flexible premium alternative.
This guide evaluates the main 2025 choices and identifies which remain worth buying now. Prices and availability can change; the Samsung launch and US list-price figures below are historical or dated references, not permanent sale prices.
Quick recommendations
| Use case | Recommended soundbar | What you get | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall for console and TV gaming | Samsung HW-Q990F | 11.1.4 channels, subwoofer, rear speakers, Dolby Atmos, Game Mode Pro and 4K/120Hz passthrough | Expensive, large and requires powered rear-speaker placement |
| Best for PC gaming | Razer Leviathan V2 Pro | Desktop design, head-tracking AI, adaptive beamforming, THX Spatial Audio and headset jack | No conventional HDMI 2.1 home-theater passthrough or physical rear speakers |
| Best premium alternative | Sony HT-A7000 | 7.1.2 standalone bar, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, built-in subwoofer and optional Sony expansion | Rear speakers and a separate subwoofer cost extra |
| Best budget option | Creative Stage Pro | Compact 2.1 bar with subwoofer, HDMI ARC, optical, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5mm | No Atmos, rear channels, or 4K/120Hz passthrough |
| Best discounted previous generation | Samsung HW-Q990D | Previous flagship with documented 4K/120Hz passthrough | It is a 2024 model; stock, firmware and discount depth vary |
These products do not compete in one uniform category. The Samsung and Sony systems are living-room home-theater packages, the Razer is a near-field desktop speaker, and the Creative is an inexpensive stereo/subwoofer solution.
Best overall: Samsung HW-Q990F
The Samsung HW-Q990F is Samsung’s 2025 flagship. Samsung lists an 11.1.4-channel system with a soundbar, subwoofer and rear speakers, wireless Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Game Mode Pro and SpaceFit Sound Pro. Its specification sheet lists 4K video passthrough at 120Hz: official specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- PC Soundbar with Full-Range Drivers: Armed with two full-range drivers and two passive radiators, the Leviathan V2 X delivers a riveting audio experience across all your entertainment.Waterproof : No
- Compact Desktop Form Factor: The most compact soundbar in our Leviathan V2 range fits perfectly beneath your monitor for a clutter-free desktop
- USB Type C Power and Audio Delivery: Powered by a single USB Type C cable to deliver dynamic audio with a volume output of up to 90Db and enables for an easy setup

- Powered by Razer Chroma RGB: With 14 lighting zones, countless patterns, dynamic in-game lighting effects—experience full RGB customization and deeper immersion with the world’s largest lighting ecosystem for gaming devices
That included hardware gives it a more convincing physical surround field than a small bar relying only on virtual processing. Rear speakers can place effects behind the seating position, while the up-firing channels can add height when the room and content cooperate. It is an editorial recommendation for maximum living-room immersion, not a claim of controlled competitive-gaming advantage.
Why it suits console gaming
- 4K/120Hz passthrough is relevant to PS5, Xbox Series X and high-refresh gaming PCs when the bar is used in the HDMI chain.
- Game Mode Pro is designed for Samsung’s gaming presentation, while Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support the formats used by compatible games and media.
- The subwoofer adds cinematic impact, but reduce its level if bass masks footsteps or dialogue.
Important compromises
- Samsung’s US launch price was $1,999 and its US product page showed $1,999.99 during the cited price check; promotions and availability change.
- The bar and rear speakers need substantial space. “Wireless” rear speakers and subwoofer still require wall power.
- Q-Symphony is a Samsung-TV feature, not a universal television benefit. Samsung describes compatibility with compatible 2020–2025 Samsung TVs.
- It is excessive for a desk, small bedroom or buyer who cannot position rear speakers.
Best for PC gaming: Razer Leviathan V2 Pro
The Razer Leviathan V2 Pro is built for one listener sitting in front of a monitor. Razer describes head-tracking AI and adaptive beamforming that work with THX Spatial Audio to steer a wider sound field toward the listener. It also provides Bluetooth 5.0, a 3.5mm headset connection and Chroma RGB.
Best use
Place it beneath a monitor with the listener centered in front of it. The headset jack makes speaker-to-headphone switching convenient, and direct wired connections are preferable to Bluetooth when synchronization matters.
What it cannot replace
- It has no physical rear-speaker package and is not a full Atmos living-room system.
- Head tracking is most useful while you remain in the intended seating position; moving well off-axis reduces the benefit.
- It is a poor match for multi-seat TV viewing or a console setup that needs HDMI 2.1 passthrough.
- RGB lighting is a style feature, not evidence of better audio.
Best premium alternative: Sony HT-A7000
Sony’s HT-A7000 is an older but still credible premium bar. Sony lists a 7.1.2-channel design with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and a built-in subwoofer. Optional Sony rear speakers and a separate subwoofer can be added; the expansion ecosystem also supports Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping as described on its product page.
Recommended Free Tools
It makes sense for a Sony-TV owner who wants a capable standalone bar now and the option to expand later. However, adding the optional components can make the complete system costly, and a standalone bar cannot reproduce the same physical rear-channel envelopment as the Q990F package. Verify current HDMI passthrough, VRR and refresh-rate behavior for your exact console, display and firmware before buying.

Best budget choice: Creative Stage Pro
The Creative Stage Pro is a compact 2.1-channel bar-and-subwoofer system. A 2025 review reported 160W peak power, Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI ARC, USB-C audio, optical and 3.5mm input; another review positioned it around $169–$170 at the time, not as a current guaranteed price: Tom’s Guide review.
It is suitable for a desk, bedroom or small TV where louder, clearer sound and some bass matter more than surround effects. It is not a Dolby Atmos system, has no discrete rear channels and does not provide 4K/120Hz passthrough. Choose it for simple connectivity and value rather than channel-count marketing.
Best discounted previous-generation option: Samsung HW-Q990D
The HW-Q990D is Samsung’s 2024 flagship, not the 2025 model. It remains relevant when clearance pricing makes it substantially cheaper than newer premium systems. Independent testing documents 4K/120Hz passthrough for next-generation consoles and PCs: RTINGS’ review.

What makes a soundbar good for gaming?
Positional clarity
A useful gaming bar should keep dialogue, reloads, footsteps and environmental details intelligible while separating movement across the front and, where hardware allows, the sides, rear and height channels. Virtual surround depends heavily on room reflections, walls, ceiling height, calibration and seating position.

Latency and reliability
HDMI 2.1 support does not prove low audio latency. Look for stable lip-sync behavior, reliable handshakes and firmware support. Do not treat a “Game” label or RGB lighting as a latency measurement.
Connectivity and video compatibility
Check the specific ports and features you need: HDMI eARC, HDMI 2.1 passthrough, optical, USB, 3.5mm and Bluetooth. For PS5, Xbox Series X and high-refresh PCs, verify 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM support for the exact input and output path. HDMI 2.1 labels vary by port, firmware, region and supported feature.

Bass, room and desk fit
A subwoofer improves explosions and engines but can obscure footsteps if set too high. Measure bar height against the TV stand, allow up-firing drivers clear space, and plan for the power and placement requirements of rear speakers. Room correction cannot fully fix poor physical placement.
Do you need HDMI 2.1?
Not always. The important question is where the video signal travels.
- Console or PC → soundbar HDMI input → soundbar eARC output → TV: convenient when the bar correctly passes 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM.
- Console or PC → TV HDMI 2.1 input → TV eARC → soundbar: often preferable when the TV has enough HDMI 2.1 inputs or the bar’s passthrough is limited.
- Console or PC → display, then optical or ARC to soundbar: simple, but may lose advanced audio formats or video-related flexibility.
For a monitor-first setup, ensure the soundbar does not become the limiting HDMI device. If a console works at 4K/120Hz when connected directly to the TV but not through the bar, keep video direct to the TV and send audio back over eARC.

Soundbar versus gaming headphones
| Priority | Soundbar | Headphones or headset |
|---|---|---|
| Cinematic scale and bass | Usually stronger | More intimate |
| Competitive positional precision | Room-dependent virtual or physical surround | Usually more consistent in near field |
| Privacy and late-night play | Poorer | Better |
| Microphone communication | Requires a separate microphone or controller | Usually built in |
| Comfort and shared listening | Better for many users | One listener and possible fatigue |
For competitive shooters, treat a soundbar as a comfort and immersion choice, not an automatic advantage. Headphones are generally safer when enemy-location precision, isolation or voice chat is the priority.
Does Dolby Atmos matter?
Atmos can convey height and spatial information when the game, console or PC, operating system and complete output chain support it. The logo alone does not guarantee overhead effects. Physical up-firing drivers and rear speakers usually create a more enveloping result than a small stereo bar using only virtual processing, but ceiling shape, seating position and furniture can prevent intended reflections.
Choose by setup
Desk and single PC player
Choose the Razer Leviathan V2 Pro for its near-field design and headset switching, or the Creative Stage Pro if price and basic inputs matter more than spatial processing.
Bedroom or small TV
A compact 2.1 system such as the Creative is easier to place and less likely to overwhelm the room. A large Atmos package is poor value if rear speakers cannot be positioned.
Medium living room
Consider a standalone Atmos bar such as the Sony HT-A7000, or a surround package if you can place rear speakers and want physical rear effects.

Large living room and maximum immersion
The Samsung HW-Q990F is the most complete one-purchase package here, provided the budget and speaker placement are acceptable.
Console, PC and Switch setup guidance
PS5 and Xbox Series X/S
- Use a TV HDMI 2.1 port when possible and connect the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar.
- Use the soundbar’s HDMI input only after confirming 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM passthrough.
- If 4K/120Hz fails, test the console directly on the TV, check the cable and port, update firmware, then power-cycle all devices to reset the HDMI handshake.
Gaming PC
Use USB, 3.5mm, optical or another direct wired connection when delay and synchronization matter. Confirm whether the PC and game output stereo, multichannel PCM, Dolby Atmos or another format, and verify that a high-refresh monitor is not constrained by the soundbar.
Nintendo Switch
The Switch commonly connects through its dock to the TV. Route video to the TV and use eARC or ARC to the soundbar unless the bar’s inputs provide the features your television chain requires.
Common problems and fixes
Atmos is enabled but height is weak
- The game or system may be outputting stereo or another format.
- The TV may be using ARC instead of eARC.
- Ceiling height, texture, seating position or furniture may prevent up-firing reflections.
- The content’s height mix may simply be subtle.
Rear speakers disconnect
Check power, placement, wireless interference and firmware, then follow the model-specific manufacturer support procedure. Universal button sequences are not reliable across brands.
There is too much bass
- Lower the subwoofer level or disable bass enhancement.
- Try Standard or Game mode instead of Cinema.
- Raise dialogue or center-channel level where available.
- Use headphones for competitive sessions requiring maximum footstep clarity.
The bar blocks the TV
Measure the bar height, stand clearance, infrared path and screen’s lower edge before purchase. Wall mounting can change the required clearance, but the bar should remain centered near the display.
How to compare candidates fairly
A practical editorial framework is: gaming connectivity 25%, spatial performance 20%, latency and reliability 15%, sound quality 15%, setup flexibility 10%, value 10% and usability 5%. These are decision weights, not laboratory measurements. Compare complete packages—bar, subwoofer, rear speakers and required accessories—not channel counts alone.
Final verdict
Buy the Samsung HW-Q990F when you want the fullest living-room gaming package and can place its powered rear speakers. Buy the Razer Leviathan V2 Pro for a centered PC desk. Choose the Creative Stage Pro for inexpensive, compact 2.1 audio, or the Sony HT-A7000 for a premium standalone bar that can grow within Sony’s ecosystem. The HW-Q990D is worth considering only when its verified discount and included package clearly beat newer alternatives.
