Best Gyre Alternative for Looping a YouTube Playlist from a NAS

OBS Studio can loop NAS files into a YouTube Live broadcast, but it needs an always-on encoder computer. Compare that setup with hosted and library-focused alternatives.

For a do-it-yourself setup, use OBS Studio on a computer that can access your NAS. Add one NAS video as a looping Media Source, or make an ordered playlist with OBS’s VLC Video source, then send the output to a configured YouTube Live event. The computer must stay on and connected while it encodes. If you would rather not run an encoder at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

First decide whether you need local playback or a YouTube broadcast

Playing a NAS playlist on a television or in a media-server app is not the same as broadcasting it as a YouTube Live stream. For a public live broadcast, an encoder such as OBS sends video to a YouTube live event. For local viewing, a media server may be enough; no YouTube event is involved.

The NAS holds the files, but OBS does the encoding and transmission. It needs to be able to read the NAS files over a mounted drive or network share, and the computer running OBS needs to remain awake, online, and connected to both the NAS and the internet during the broadcast. The documentation reviewed does not establish compatibility with a particular NAS model or share protocol.

Best options for this use case

Option Best for What it does Main trade-off
StreamNeo Keeping a YouTube stream running without a home encoder Upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and start a cloud loop or playlist. StreamNeo is first to try because it runs always-on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast directly from a NAS or a camera. You need to upload the media and use the service.
OBS Studio with NAS media A configurable, self-hosted broadcast Reads accessible files, loops one file or a playlist, and encodes the YouTube stream. Requires an always-on computer, NAS access, and YouTube Live setup.
Gyre A hosted workflow organized around cloud-stored videos Gyre describes uploading files to its storage, creating a looping playlist, and scheduling a live stream. It depends on Gyre’s service and current plan features. Its vendor-described workflow does not establish comparative uptime, image quality, or total cost.
Jellyfin Organizing and playing a personal media library Provides a self-hosted media library and documented live-TV functionality, including supported tuner inputs. The reviewed documentation does not establish a direct workflow for continuously broadcasting a NAS playlist to YouTube Live.
Youtarr with a media server Mirroring selected YouTube playlist items into a local library Youtarr documentation describes downloading selected playlist videos and synchronizing server playlists, with an M3U fallback. It is not documented as an encoder that continuously publishes a YouTube Live stream.

Set up OBS to loop NAS files to YouTube Live

1. Confirm the NAS files are accessible to the encoder

Mount the NAS share or otherwise make the media files available to the computer running OBS. Confirm that the account running OBS can read the files and that the network connection is stable enough for continuous playback. This is an architectural requirement, not a NAS-specific compatibility guarantee. OBS is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux; its resource needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Create the YouTube live event

Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel and create or select the live event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance says the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours after the request. In the event’s stream settings, obtain its stream key and configure OBS to use the event. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the event and encoder connection rather than reusing a key in a way that could send video to the wrong event.

3. Add a single looping file

  1. In OBS, choose Sources > + > Media Source.
  2. Name the source and select the NAS file. Make sure the path is available to the OBS computer, not merely visible from another device.
  3. Enable Loop in the source properties, then confirm the preview plays and restarts at the end.

OBS documents a loop control for Media Source. This is the simplest arrangement when one file should repeat continuously.

4. Add an ordered playlist

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, choose Sources > + > VLC Video.
  3. Add the NAS media paths in the order you want them played. Check that each item is accessible to the OBS host.
  4. Leave Loop Playlist enabled or enable it in the source properties. OBS documents this as the setting that restarts the source after it runs out of media files.
  5. Check the preview, ordering, and transitions between files before starting the event.

5. Connect OBS and start the event

In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube or the applicable custom ingest option and supply the event’s stream key as required. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm the incoming video and start the live event in YouTube Studio if the event is waiting for encoder input. The precise button labels and event flow can change; use the current YouTube Studio controls for the selected event.

Keep the host computer awake and ensure it remains connected to the NAS and internet. OBS’s required CPU resources depend on the selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no single requirement that applies to every setup.

Choose OBS output settings deliberately

The cited OBS documentation establishes the looping controls and variable system requirements, but it does not prescribe one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every YouTube event. Avoid treating a universal numeric setting as correct for all connections and source files. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the event’s available settings, then test the complete path before relying on it.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Pick an output your computer can encode continuously and your upload connection can sustain. Matching the source may avoid unnecessary scaling, but the right choice depends on the media and encoder.
  • Bitrate: Set a video bitrate appropriate to the chosen output and stable upload bandwidth, leaving capacity for network variation and other traffic.
  • Keyframes: Follow the current YouTube encoder requirements for the event rather than guessing an interval.
  • Audio: Check that the playlist’s audio is present and at a suitable level, and that files with different audio formats transition as expected.

Do not assume a stream is healthy because the OBS preview looks correct: verify that YouTube receives the encoder feed and that the public or private event plays as intended.

When a local media server is the better answer

Jellyfin for a library you want to watch

Jellyfin describes a personal media library and live-TV features, including supported tuners. That makes it relevant for organizing and playing media locally, but the reviewed documentation does not show it as a one-click replacement for a service that broadcasts NAS files continuously to YouTube Live. See Jellyfin’s introduction and its live-TV documentation.

Youtarr for bringing playlist items into a local library

Youtarr documents downloading selected YouTube playlist items and synchronizing playlists to Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, with an M3U fallback. That is a library-management workflow, not a documented continuous YouTube encoder. Review its media server playlist instructions before using it, and check the rights, platform terms, and content-owner permission that apply to any material you download.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than keeping a NAS-connected encoder running, StreamNeo avoids the home-computer part of the setup. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
NAS file does not load or goes offline The OBS host cannot access the share, the path changed, or permissions prevent reading it. Open the exact file from the encoder computer using the same account that runs OBS; verify the share stays mounted and the path remains available.
VLC Video is missing from the source menu VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS if needed.
A file plays once and stops The source loop option is off, or a playlist is not configured to loop. For a single file, check Media Source’s Loop option. For a list, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist.
The playlist stops after one pass Loop Playlist is disabled or one of the playlist items is unavailable. Enable Loop Playlist, then verify every listed NAS path can be read.
YouTube receives no encoder video The stream key or event configuration may be wrong, or live streaming is not enabled for the channel. Check the selected event and its stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm OBS is connected, and verify channel live-stream eligibility and enablement.
Broadcast interrupts during a long run The encoder host may sleep, lose internet or NAS connectivity, or be unable to sustain its encode workload. Review host power settings, network stability, share access, and OBS resource use. The documentation does not establish a guaranteed recovery behavior for this self-hosted arrangement.

Costs, service dependence, and content rights

OBS, Jellyfin, and Youtarr support self-hosted workflows, but a YouTube broadcast from NAS files still requires an encoder computer and an internet connection capable of sending the stream. Existing hardware may be sufficient; the cited OBS system requirements do not validate a particular mini PC or NAS combination. Gyre describes a hosted storage-and-playlist workflow, but its current plan details and prices can change; the available evidence does not support a total-cost, uptime, or quality comparison.

Looping a video does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights and comply with YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. The sources cited here do not settle the legal status of any particular file or playlist.
