There is no single best handheld gaming console for everyone: start with the games you want to play. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives and a straightforward handheld-to-TV setup, Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-focused library and SteamOS, a ROG Xbox Ally for Windows PC storefronts, or Retroid Pocket 5 for Android games, streaming and retro titles you own.
Best handheld gaming consoles at a glance
| Handheld | Best fit | Display and platform | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo exclusives and play on a TV | 7.9-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz LCD, according to Compare Electronic’s UK comparison | The comparison says the included dock supports TV output. Its reported UK list price was £419.99 after a September 1, 2026 increase; this is a dated UK figure, not a universal or guaranteed current price. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Players with Steam purchases who want SteamOS and an OLED screen | 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED, up to 90 Hz; Valve product page, accessed 2026 | Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content. Compare Electronic reported a UK list price of £649 for the 512 GB model after a May 27, 2026 increase. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) | Players who value a Windows game library and high-spec display features | 7.4-inch, 1080p OLED, 120 Hz, VRR and HDR; ASUS ROG’s 2026 product page | Runs Windows 11 and uses an Xbox-focused interface. ASUS’s specifications describe the display, not an independent performance comparison. |
| ROG Xbox Ally | A lower-cost Windows handheld option in the UK comparison | Windows handheld; exact display specifications not stated here | Compare Electronic describes native Windows access to PC storefronts. Check the exact regional model and price before buying. |
| Retroid Pocket 5 | Android games, streaming and retro games you own | Android handheld; detailed display specifications not stated here | It is a different category from native PC and current Nintendo games; do not assume those games run natively on it. |
Prices and some Switch 2, Ally and Retroid details above come from Compare Electronic’s UK comparison published September 23, 2026. They are not directly comparable across regions or dates. Valve and ASUS provide primary product specifications for the Steam Deck OLED and ROG Xbox Ally X20, respectively.
Which handheld should you buy?
Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo games
If Nintendo’s own game library is the priority, Switch 2 is the clearest fit. Compare Electronic’s comparison highlights its 7.9-inch 1080p, 120 Hz LCD and the included dock for TV output. Those hardware and price details are attributed to that UK comparison rather than a Nintendo primary source.
Choose Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-centered library
Steam Deck OLED makes sense if you already buy games on Steam and want a handheld built around SteamOS. Valve lists a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Game compatibility can vary, so check the specific titles you care about rather than assuming every Steam purchase works equally well on handheld.

Choose a ROG Xbox Ally for Windows storefront access
The Ally models suit buyers who want a Windows handheld and access to PC storefronts. Compare Electronic positions the base ROG Xbox Ally as the lower-cost Windows option in its UK comparison. ASUS’s 2026 X20 page describes the higher-spec Ally X model’s display and Windows 11 software; confirm the exact model, hardware and regional availability before choosing between them.
Choose Retroid Pocket 5 for Android and retro play
Retroid Pocket 5 belongs on a different shortlist: the comparison describes it as an Android device for Android titles, streaming and retro games the owner has. It is not a substitute for a Windows PC handheld or a Nintendo console if your goal is to run their current games natively.
Switch 2 vs Steam Deck OLED
The decision is primarily about library and use, not a simple specification win. Switch 2 is the more direct choice for Nintendo exclusives and the comparison’s described docked-TV setup. Steam Deck OLED is the natural pick for Steam purchases and SteamOS. Both have screens suited to handheld play, but their resolutions, panel types and refresh rates do not by themselves establish which delivers a better experience across different games.

How to compare handhelds before buying
Check the game library first
Match the device to where your games come from: Nintendo exclusives, Steam, Windows PC storefronts, or Android and owned retro titles. On PC handhelds, verify compatibility game by game, especially if a particular title is the reason you are buying.
Consider the operating system and setup
Nintendo’s console format and SteamOS are distinct from operating a Windows handheld. If you want broad PC storefront access, Windows is relevant; if you prefer a console-focused experience, weigh the platform and interface you are most comfortable using. The cited comparison characterizes access and ease differently across these systems, but does not establish a universal easiest-to-use winner.

Read display specifications in context
Valve specifies the Steam Deck OLED’s size, resolution, HDR OLED panel and maximum refresh rate; ASUS specifies a different panel and resolution for the ROG Xbox Ally X20. These are manufacturer specifications, not controlled tests of image quality or game performance. Switch 2’s cited screen details come from the UK comparison.
Treat battery figures as estimates, not a head-to-head result
Valve estimates 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED, depending on content. That range is manufacturer guidance, not a promise for every game or a result from a common battery test across the devices in this guide. Game and settings affect actual runtime.
Decide whether TV play and portability matter
If you plan to play on a television, check how each system connects and whether you need a dock or other accessory. The cited comparison identifies Switch 2’s included dock, while Valve says Steam Deck can connect to displays over USB-C and lists its Docking Station as an option. A handheld’s size and weight also matter if you expect to carry it often; compare the exact model’s specifications before purchase.

Check price, region and accessories
Prices can change and vary by country, retailer and model. The figures in this guide are UK snapshots from Compare Electronic’s September 2026 comparison. Match accessories to the exact system: Valve says all Steam Deck models support microSD cards and offers an official dock; the comparison specifies microSD Express for Switch 2. Verify card, dock and other accessory compatibility before buying.
