If you want horror built more around atmosphere, story or puzzle-solving than sudden shocks, start with SOMA. Little Nightmares is another approachable style of horror, while Amnesia: The Bunker is a much tenser step up. None can be promised to contain zero jump scares: the available descriptions do not provide a verified scare count.

How to choose if you dislike jump scares

“Low jump-scare focus” is not the same as “no jump scares.” The sources below describe each game’s style and intensity, but do not establish a standardized scare count. Treat these as recommendations by kind of horror, not a guaranteed avoidance list.

For a first game, consider what you find unsettling besides sudden noises or images: disturbing ideas, being pursued, helplessness, or managing scarce supplies. A game can rely less on abrupt shocks and still feel frightening for other reasons.

Best horror games for jump-averse beginners

Game Best fit What the sources establish What remains uncertain
SOMA Atmospheric, story-led science-fiction horror PlayStation describes it as horror and adventure; editorial coverage characterizes it as more focused on atmosphere and ideas than jump scares. No verified zero-scare guarantee or scare count.
Little Nightmares Stylized puzzle-platform horror TechRadar describes an effect of helplessness while retaining ways to escape. No verified jump-scare count or detailed beginner-accessibility assessment.
Amnesia: The Bunker A more demanding survival-horror challenge Steam describes first-person horror; PC Gamer emphasizes stealth, resource management and sustained stress. No quantified sudden-scare frequency or complete content-warning inventory.
Signalis A possible follow-up for retro survival-horror fans Editorial coverage describes retro-style survival horror with an atmospheric presentation. Beginner difficulty and jump-scare frequency are not established.

SOMA: the natural first pick for atmosphere and ideas

PlayStation’s description of SOMA identifies it as a horror and adventure game from Frictional Games. A recent editorial roundup characterizes it as more concerned with atmosphere and ideas than jump scares. That makes it a strong starting point if unsettling science-fiction concepts appeal to you more than constant pursuit or survival mechanics. It is still horror, not a promise of a scare-free experience.

  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

Little Nightmares: visual unease and puzzle-platforming

TechRadar’s overview of horror games describes Little Nightmares as creating helplessness while leaving ways to escape. Its visual, puzzle-platform approach makes it a different kind of introduction from first-person survival horror. The sources do not confirm that it avoids jump scares, so check a detailed content guide first if even occasional sudden scares are a deal-breaker.

Amnesia: The Bunker: a step up in pressure

Steam’s store description presents Amnesia: The Bunker as first-person horror from the creators of SOMA and Amnesia. PC Gamer’s coverage frames it around stealth, limited resources and sustained stress. Those features make it a less gentle first choice if you are especially uncomfortable with pursuit or pressure, even though the evidence does not quantify its jump scares.

Project Songbird - PlayStation 5
  • A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
  • A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
  • A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
  • The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
  • The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

Signalis: an unverified alternative

Signalis may suit someone specifically drawn to retro-style survival horror and an atmospheric presentation, as described in the G2A News roundup. The available evidence does not establish its beginner difficulty or sudden-scare frequency, so consider it a possible follow-up rather than a verified low-scare pick.

A practical starting order

  1. Choose SOMA if you want story, atmosphere and unsettling ideas as the main draw.
  2. Try Little Nightmares if you prefer visual storytelling, puzzles and platforming.
  3. Move to Amnesia: The Bunker if you are ready for stealth, resource management and sustained survival pressure.
  4. Consider Signalis if retro survival horror appeals to you, but verify its scare profile and difficulty independently.

This order is a judgment based on the cited descriptions and coverage, not a firsthand difficulty test. If you need a strict list with no jump scares, these sources cannot verify one. A community discussion titled “Horror games without jumpscares” and beginner recommendations illustrates how players phrase the question, but it is anecdotal discussion rather than a measured guide or representative survey.
