For a self-managed server in India, compare Google Compute Engine in Mumbai or Delhi with Amazon Lightsail in Mumbai. Neither is a proven universal winner: the right choice depends on your stream’s resolution, codec and bitrate, the server’s role, and the provider’s current regional price and data-transfer terms. For a continuous fireplace broadcast, estimate egress before choosing a plan, then test the complete setup and its recovery behavior.
Which cloud server should you choose?
These are credible India-region candidates, not tested recommendations for a particular fireplace stream. Google documents Compute Engine zones in Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). Lightsail offers fixed-resource VPS bundles in Mumbai. The available evidence does not establish comparative uptime, ingest latency, encoding performance, or a workload-specific bill for either service.

Do not select by provider name alone. First decide whether the server will encode the video or simply relay a stream that is already encoded. Encoding can load the CPU; relaying still requires sustained network egress. For either architecture, confirm current availability, price, taxes, and transfer terms in your account before relying on a server.
Estimate the stream’s bandwidth and data transfer
Your stream settings determine both the required network capacity and the amount of data sent from the server. YouTube’s H.264 guidance gives a recommended range of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. The appropriate setting depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult YouTube’s current table rather than treating that range as a universal target. YouTube recommends planning for 20% upload headroom. Apply that margin to the configured bitrate when checking sustained network capacity, and account for the fact that a disruption can break a live stream. YouTube network guidance
For a rough egress estimate, multiply the average bitrate in megabits per second by operating seconds, then divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes. A continuous stream operates about 2,592,000 seconds in a 30-day month. At 5 Mbps, that is roughly 1,620,000 MB (about 1.62 TB decimal) before protocol overhead; actual provider billing units and accounting may differ. Use your actual bitrate and hours, then compare the result with the selected plan’s allowance and charges. YouTube’s recommended bitrate range is a setting reference, not a prediction of your provider bill.

Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
- Choose the video and audio settings. Select the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to broadcast, and use YouTube’s published bitrate guidance for that combination. Do not assume a server can encode a higher quality workload without checking actual CPU use.
- Use a secure ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for streaming to YouTube Live. Enter the ingest URL and stream key in the encoder or relay configuration as required by the software you use. YouTube encoder guidance
- Set rate control and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM will perform well.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public log. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If you believe it was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. YouTube stream-key guidance
Deploy and test before leaving it unattended
- Provision the region and VM. Choose Mumbai or Delhi on Compute Engine, or Mumbai on Lightsail, then select a configuration suited to the planned encoding or relay workload. Review the live price, tax, and network-transfer terms for that exact region and plan before creating it.
- Install and configure your encoder or relay. Use the actual media source, codec, bitrate, RTMPS destination, and stream key you intend to run. Keep credentials out of publicly readable files and logs.
- Measure while streaming. Check CPU and memory use if the VM encodes, along with network throughput and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Do not infer 24/7 capacity from a short idle test.
- Test interruptions deliberately. Verify what happens if the encoder stops, the VM restarts, or the connection to YouTube drops. Set up monitoring and a restart or recovery procedure that you have actually tested.
- Confirm the long-stream archive workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that a longer continuous broadcast will become one archive; check YouTube’s current workflow if you need a recording of a stream longer than 12 hours. Fireplace-stream rights and channel policies
Only broadcast video and audio you have the rights to use. A fireplace video, background music, ambient sound recording, or loop obtained from someone else may be protected by copyright; permission to watch or download material does not automatically include permission to rebroadcast it. Check the applicable rights and platform requirements before going live. For a long-running channel, also make the content meaningfully yours: a loop alone should not be treated as a guarantee of eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s monetization decisions and copyright enforcement depend on its current policies and the channel’s circumstances.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: check sustained egress capacity against the configured bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect stream health and connection logs, then test the reconnect and restart path.
- The VM is CPU-bound: this is especially relevant when encoding on the server. Measure CPU during the real workload and adjust the VM configuration or encoding settings based on that measurement; no particular size is established as sufficient for every stream.
- The bill is higher than expected: compare actual outbound traffic with the plan’s transfer allowance and current regional network charges. In particular, confirm Lightsail Mumbai’s allowance rather than assuming it matches most other regions.
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health: verify the RTMPS destination, stream key, codec, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Reset a possibly exposed key.
- The long broadcast is missing as one archive: do not assume the under-12-hour automatic archive behavior applies to a stream running longer than 12 hours. Check the current YouTube workflow and plan recording separately if an archive is essential.
