| GBA and Nintendo DS with minimal setup | Delta | Polished iOS interface, Nintendo-focused controls, save states, fast-forwarding and documented DS features. |
| Most systems and deepest customization | RetroArch | Downloadable cores cover Nintendo, Sega, Sony, arcade and many other platforms, with shaders, cheats, rewind, netplay and RetroAchievements. |
| Large Apple-device library | Provenance | Broad system coverage, artwork management and advertised iCloud synchronization; features depend on the current build and tier. |
| Beginner experience | Delta | Import a file, tap the box art and play without learning a multi-core frontend. |
| Advanced customization | RetroArch | Per-core and per-game mappings, video settings, shaders and latency controls. |
“Best” is therefore a use-case judgment, not a claim that every game performs identically. Nintendo DS peripherals, unusual cartridges, emulation cores, iPhone hardware and iOS updates can all change the result.
What an iPhone emulator actually does
An emulator reproduces another console’s hardware in software. A ROM or game file is a digital copy of a cartridge or disc; it is not the emulator. A BIOS or firmware file is system software that some emulators or features may use. In RetroArch, a core is the individual emulator engine, while the app is the frontend that organizes cores, games, saves and settings.
#1 Best Overall
- It features a more powerful processor than any previous portable system, for faster, smoother gameplay
- The high-resolution, full color screen makes the game jump out at you -- 50% bigger than Game Boy Color
- Two new buttons, L & R, bring you more control & game options
- Extended battery life lets you play for up to 15 hours on a pair of AA batteries
- Compact Game Paks let you store your game progress & are smaller then Game Boy Color Paks
These apps do not legally provide commercial games. Delta explicitly says it does not distribute games (Delta troubleshooting). Use only game and system files that you are legally permitted to possess and use in your jurisdiction. Copyright and backup exceptions differ between countries, and owning a cartridge does not automatically make every download lawful.

Delta documents NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, GBA and Nintendo DS support, including common .gb, .gbc, .gba, .ds and .nds imports (Delta press kit). RetroArch’s App Store listing names DS, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, N64, Sega systems, PlayStation, PSP, arcade platforms and more (RetroArch on the App Store). Provenance advertises more than 50 classic systems across current projects and builds; confirm the exact core and feature state on its systems page and source repository.
Delta: the default for GBA and NDS
Why it is easiest
Delta presents games as a library rather than as a collection of emulator cores. Import a compatible file, let it identify the system, then launch it from the artwork. System-specific skins, portrait and landscape layouts, save states, fast-forwarding, cheats and controller mappings are built into the same interface.
GBA experience
GBA games generally suit the iPhone well: portrait play works for menu-heavy RPGs, while landscape gives action games more room. You can change skins, adjust screen scaling and use a physical controller. Delta is the clearest choice when you want to play standard dumps and ROM hacks without tuning a video stack. Games with unusual cartridge hardware or poorly patched hacks can still fail.

Nintendo DS experience
DS emulation is more demanding because the phone must show two screens and accept touch input. Delta documents one-screen, side-by-side and larger-screen layouts, improvements to its melonDS-based implementation, optional BIOS files, GBA insertion into the DS dual slot and community WFC-compatible online play (Delta release notes).
Current releases do not require BIOS files for ordinary DS play. BIOS may still matter for the DS Home Menu or dual-slot GBA functions; see Delta’s DS BIOS explanation. Microphone, camera, motion, precise stylus and anti-emulation features can remain imperfect. “Supports DS” does not mean every title or accessory works perfectly.
Controllers and synchronization
Delta supports iOS-compatible controllers including Xbox Wireless and Elite Series 2, Xbox Adaptive and Series controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro, Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Online controllers (Delta controller guide). Mapping remains game- and system-dependent, especially when a DS title needs touch input.
Delta Sync can synchronize games, in-game saves, save states, cheats, skins and controller mappings through Google Drive or Dropbox, with version history and restoration (Delta press kit). Treat that as backup assistance, not a reason to abandon manual backups.

- Excellent Nintendo handheld and classic-console workflow.
- Less granular video, core and latency control than RetroArch.
- Limited coverage outside Nintendo systems.
RetroArch: the power-user option
How its core model changes setup
RetroArch is a frontend. You install or select a core for the target system, then configure that core and sometimes each game separately. The model is powerful but less immediately intuitive than Delta; menu labels and core availability can change between iOS builds.
What it adds
- Broad Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, PSP, arcade and other system coverage.
- Shader presets, rewind, cheats, netplay and RetroAchievements.
- Per-game remapping, advanced audio/video options and multiple core choices.
- Fine control for users chasing a particular look, latency or controller layout.
GBA and DS support reflects the selected core, game and device rather than a universal guarantee. RetroArch is a strong fit if you already understand emulator settings or want one app for many platforms. It is a poor first choice if your goal is simply to import Pokémon, Mario or another GBA/DS title and start playing.
Setup outline
- Install the official App Store build or follow the current iOS installation documentation.
- Open the app and update core information and assets when those options are available in your build.
- Install or select the core for the target system.
- Import or scan legally obtained game files.
- Configure the controller under the input settings.
- Set per-core or per-game video, audio, shader and save options, then back up saves and states.
Provenance: a broad Apple-library alternative
Provenance targets a media-library experience with artwork, multiple import methods, cheats, shaders and save states. Its project covers handheld, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, arcade and later-generation systems, with advertised iCloud synchronization that can include ROMs, saves, BIOS files and artwork (Provenance project).
Check the current App Store listing and build before choosing it. Availability, DS core status and synchronization limits can differ between the free app, sideloaded builds and Provenance Plus. It makes most sense for someone who wants GBA inside a larger cross-device collection; for GBA or DS alone, Delta is usually simpler.

App Store, EU distribution and sideloading
App Store route
The App Store is the lowest-friction option: no jailbreak, straightforward updates and Apple’s normal app review. Country availability can change, however, and an app can be withdrawn, replaced or delayed after an update.
Alternative distribution
Some EU users may encounter AltStore PAL, AltStore Classic or other alternative-marketplace and sideloading routes. Delta’s official guide says distribution depends on location: App Store outside the EU and AltStore PAL in EU countries (Delta guide; Apple’s alternative distribution information). Alternative installs are not automatically unsafe, but signing, account, update and regional requirements add friction. Do not install random configuration profiles or certificates promoted by social-media links.
GBA and DS controls: touch versus a controller
Touch controls are adequate for turn-based games, menus and short sessions. Platformers, fighting games and N64 titles usually feel better with physical buttons. For a controller, prioritize a tactile D-pad, low-latency Bluetooth or USB-C, a phone clamp that fits your case, comfortable GBA/N64 mapping and a way to trigger DS touch actions. Hall-effect sticks are useful when available, but no controller is universally best.
- Attached clamp controllers: Backbone, Razer Kishi and GameSir provide a handheld shape; verify the exact USB-C or Lightning model and case clearance.
- Separate Bluetooth controllers: 8BitDo, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch controllers can also work with iPad, Mac or consoles, but require a phone stand or clamp.
- DS specifically: leave the touchscreen unobstructed and test stylus accuracy before buying around a particular layout.
See the manufacturers’ current catalogs for model-specific compatibility: Backbone, Razer, 8BitDo and GameSir.
Best Value
- Requires 2 AA Batteries
Saves, states and backups
Keep these four things distinct:
- In-game save: created by the cartridge software and normally the most portable.
- Save state: an emulator snapshot of memory and hardware state.
- Configuration: mappings, skins, cheats and video settings.
- Cloud copy: a synchronized or manually uploaded version of any of the above.
Do not rely only on save states. A state can break after changing emulator versions, cores, ROM patches or settings, and a state from one emulator may not load in another. Before switching apps, export both battery saves and states where supported; Delta documents state export and incompatible-state cases (Delta App Store listing).
Performance and device expectations
Older iPhones usually handle GB, GBC, GBA, NES and SNES comfortably. N64 and DS are more game-dependent, while later systems need newer hardware and an appropriate core. Results vary with iPhone generation, iOS version, emulator update, thermal throttling, background tasks, screen layout and audio settings. Delta’s release notes associate faster fast-forward behavior with A15-class hardware, but that is not a universal performance cutoff (release notes).
Test the games you actually own. A title that runs well in one core, layout or iPhone may stutter or have audio, touch, sensor or timing problems elsewhere.
Install Delta and import a game
- Install Delta from its official App Store listing, or use the official regional route.
- Obtain a compatible game file legally. Delta documents
.gbafor GBA and.ds/.ndsfor DS (importing games). - Open Delta and tap the + button in the upper-right corner.
- Select the file in Files or use the iOS share sheet.
- Let Delta identify the system and download artwork if desired.
- Tap the game to launch; use the pause menu for states, fast-forwarding, skins, cheats and controls.
If you own compatible cartridges, a cartridge reader such as the Epilogue GB Operator can help create personal backups. It is a dumping tool, not a source of free games; verify supported cartridges, firmware and current price before buying.
Pair a controller with Delta
- Pair it in iPhone Settings → Bluetooth.
- Open Delta, then Settings → Controllers → Player 1.
- Select the connected controller.
- Choose Customize Controls and map buttons for each system.
- Save the mapping and test it in a game.
Common problems and fixes
The game imports but will not launch
- Confirm the dump is complete and the extension matches the system.
- Try another legitimate dump if the file freezes or fails; Delta notes that some ROM hacks need additional patching software (troubleshooting).
- Check whether a required BIOS or firmware feature is involved.
- Remove an incompatible save state and launch from a clean state.
A save disappeared
- Stop launching the game so you do not overwrite data.
- Check the emulator’s state list and Files/cloud backups.
- Confirm the ROM filename and checksum have not changed.
- Restore the newest known-good battery save or state.
- Do not import a state from another emulator unless compatibility is documented.
Touch controls or DS screens feel wrong
Rotate to landscape, choose another skin, enlarge the DS layout, adjust button placement and opacity, or use an external controller while keeping the phone screen available for touch. An iPad or external display may provide more room where the current app supports it.
DS games fail to boot or online play fails
Update Delta before following older BIOS guides. Ordinary DS play no longer requires BIOS in current releases; Home Menu and dual-slot features can differ. For online play, select a supported community server under Settings → Core Settings → Nintendo DS → WFC Server, disable a VPN or proxy if it interferes, and reset the game’s WFC configuration. This is community-hosted compatibility, not Nintendo-operated online service (Delta online multiplayer).
Choosing by use case
| If you want… | Choose |
|---|---|
| GBA only | Delta, unless shaders, achievements or advanced remapping are your priority. |
| GBA plus NDS | Delta; its documented DS layouts and current BIOS behavior reduce setup work. |
| Dozens of retro systems | RetroArch, accepting the core-by-core learning curve. |
| RetroAchievements, rewind or shader experimentation | RetroArch. |
| A polished multi-device library | Provenance after verifying its current build and sync tier. |
| Lowest setup complexity | Delta from the official distribution channel available in your country. |
Bottom line
Start with Delta if your goal is GBA or Nintendo DS on an iPhone. Move to RetroArch when system breadth and customization matter more than simplicity. Choose Provenance for a broad Apple-device library with artwork and synchronization features, after checking the current availability and paid-feature requirements. Whichever app you use, back up saves, verify your own files and judge compatibility by the games and iPhone you actually have.
