For most Intel 12th-generation desktop builds, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is the best-value default. It is a large dual-tower air cooler suited to gaming and everyday work on an i5-12600K/KF, and it can also make sense for an i7-12700K/KF. Choose the premium Noctua NH-D15 G2 for refined air cooling and support, or the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 for sustained, high-power i9-12900K/KF workloads—if your case can fit its radiator. For a compact PC, the Noctua NH-L9i-17xx is a space-saving specialist, not a high-power cooler.

The right choice depends on the exact CPU, workload, case and motherboard power settings. A locked i5 and an unrestricted i9-12900K do not ask the same thing of a cooler, even though both may be described with a 125 W base-power figure.

Quick picks

Cooler Type and size Best fit Main trade-off
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE Dual-tower air; about 155 mm tall Best value for most i5-12600K/KF and i7-12700K/KF gaming builds Check case height, RAM clearance and the exact LGA1700 mounting hardware
Noctua NH-D15 G2 Premium dual-tower air Quiet-focused builds and buyers who value support and refinement Expensive and physically large
ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 360 mm AIO i9-12900K/KF systems doing sustained rendering, compiling or other all-core work Needs substantial radiator space and adds pump and installation complexity
ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 240 240 mm AIO i5/i7 builds where a radiator suits the case better than a large tower A strong dual-tower air cooler may deliver comparable practical results more simply
Noctua NH-L9i-17xx Low-profile air Severely space-constrained, low-power or power-limited SFF systems Not intended for unrestricted i7/i9 sustained loads
ARCTIC Freezer 36 Single-tower air Locked/non-K CPUs and mainstream i5 systems Not the pick for a power-unlimited i9 workload

The Peerless Assassin 120 SE is the best general recommendation here because independent testing has found it close to more expensive air coolers while costing much less. PC Gamer listed LGA1700 support, roughly 155 mm height and a review price of about $33; that is a dated review price, not a guaranteed current retail price. PC Gamer’s Peerless Assassin 120 SE review is useful for its dimensions and test context.

Start with the processor and workload

Intel’s 12th-generation desktop Core processors use the LGA1700 socket. That includes Alder Lake desktop chips such as the i5-12600K, i7-12700K and i9-12900K. Mobile 12th-generation processors are different: they are installed in laptops and do not take a desktop CPU cooler. Noctua’s LGA1700 guide explains the desktop socket and compatibility considerations.

Intel lists the 12600K, 12700K and 12900K at 125 W Processor Base Power, but that figure is not a promise that the chip will draw no more than 125 W under turbo. Motherboard settings and workload can allow considerably higher package power. Intel distinguishes base power from turbo behavior in its Processor Base Power explanation. Cooler-brand “TDP” ratings also do not follow one standardized cross-brand performance test, so do not choose from that number alone.

  • Core i3-12100/12100F and other locked i3s: A modest air cooler is generally the sensible scale. A large dual tower is optional, not a requirement for ordinary gaming.
  • Core i5-12400/F and other locked i5s: A quality single-tower cooler such as the ARCTIC Freezer 36 is a reasonable mainstream option. A bigger cooler can run more quietly, but is not automatically necessary.
  • Core i5-12600K/KF: For gaming and mixed desktop use, choose a strong single tower or, preferably for extra noise and thermal headroom, a dual-tower cooler such as the Peerless Assassin 120 SE. A 240 mm AIO is optional.
  • Core i7-12700/F: A good air cooler is usually an appropriate starting point for a locked chip. Consider a larger dual tower if you want lower fan speeds or do long productivity jobs.
  • Core i7-12700K/KF: A large dual-tower air cooler is a strong gaming choice. Sustained, unrestricted all-core work makes a 240/280 mm AIO or tighter power tuning more attractive.
  • Core i9-12900/KF: For gaming and mixed use, a premium dual tower can work, particularly with sensible power limits. For extended all-core loads, prioritize a large cooler and consider a 280/360 mm AIO, reduced power limits or undervolting.
  • Core i9-12900K/KF: This is the most demanding common 12th-gen desktop case in this guide. A 360 mm AIO is the performance-oriented choice for sustained high power; it still cannot guarantee a particular temperature if the board permits very high power or the case airflow is poor.

Gaming is often less demanding than a long render, compile, simulation or stress test. A cooler that stays quiet during a game may run faster and louder during a sustained all-core job. No single temperature result transfers cleanly between systems: ambient temperature, mounting pressure, paste, case airflow, fan curves, workload and CPU power limits all matter. Intel’s guidance is to select a thermal solution that meets or exceeds processor power requirements, especially for intensive use: Intel thermal-solution guidance.

Our recommendations

Best overall value: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE

This six-heat-pipe dual-tower cooler is the most compelling starting point for an i5-12600K/KF gaming PC and a sensible value option for many i7-12700K/KF builds. Its performance-to-price reputation is the draw; PC Gamer’s review placed it near premium air-cooling performance at a much lower review price. Results on your own system will depend on the CPU’s power behavior and the rest of the build.

Its roughly 155 mm height fits many mid-tower cases, but not every case. Measure the available cooler height, including any extra height needed to clear tall RAM with the front fan. Also confirm the exact package includes LGA1700 mounting parts: old stock or a marketplace listing may not match the current bundle. The cooler is a poor choice if you cannot confirm the case, memory and mounting fit.

Best premium air: Noctua NH-D15 G2

Choose the NH-D15 G2 if you want premium air cooling and place a high value on noise-normalized performance, build quality and long-term support. It avoids a pump and radiator while offering substantial cooling capacity for a quiet i5/i7 system or a tuned higher-end CPU. Independent comparisons, including GamersNexus’s cooler testing, provide context for its performance relative to other air coolers.

It is not the value pick: it costs more and its size can complicate narrow cases, tall memory and motherboard socket-area clearance. Use Noctua’s LGA1700 compatibility guidance and motherboard clearance information rather than assuming every LGA1700 board is unobstructed.

Best for sustained i9 workloads: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360

A 360 mm radiator is the strongest shortlist choice for an i9-12900K/KF doing extended rendering, encoding, compilation or similar all-core work, provided the case supports it. Current roundup coverage from Tom’s Hardware and PC Gamer’s AIO guide rates the Liquid Freezer III Pro family highly for high-end cooling. Those broad cooler comparisons help establish relative capability; they should not be mistaken for a fresh, identical 12900K test in every configuration.

Before buying, verify radiator length and thickness plus fan thickness at the intended mount. A front-mounted radiator may warm the air entering the graphics card, while a top-mounted radiator changes the balance in the opposite direction. An AIO does not remove the need for sensible CPU power limits, airflow or fan curves. Its pump and fans can also be audible, and the added pump, tubing and radiator are extra failure points compared with a simple air cooler.

Best smaller AIO: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 240

The 240 mm model suits an i5 or i7 build whose case accommodates a radiator more easily than a big tower, or a builder who specifically prefers liquid cooling. ARCTIC lists it as LGA1700-compatible. The manufacturer’s certification page showed a US MSRP signal of $118.79 excluding VAT and shipping during August 2026; that is not a live US street price. Check ARCTIC’s LGA1700-certified product information for compatibility details.

Do not assume a 240 mm AIO automatically beats a high-end dual-tower air cooler. If the case has room for a good tower and you value simpler installation and fewer components, air may be the better fit.

Best compact option: Noctua NH-L9i-17xx

The NH-L9i-17xx is for a low-profile build where a tower cooler will not fit. Its small size is the point, not high sustained-power capacity. Consider it for lower-power or power-limited SFF systems, including a carefully configured i5; avoid treating socket compatibility as proof that it can cool an unrestricted i7-12700K or i9-12900K under sustained all-core load. Noctua introduced it specifically for LGA1700 compact systems: Noctua’s product announcement.

Lower-cost branded air alternative: ARCTIC Freezer 36

For a locked CPU or mainstream i5 workload, a single-tower cooler such as the Freezer 36 can be a more proportionate choice than a large dual tower. It is not the right scale for an unrestricted i9-12900K doing prolonged all-core work. Check the exact product and mounting-kit version on ARCTIC’s LGA1700 product page.

Air cooler or AIO?

Air cooling usually means fewer parts, easier installation and no pump failure mode. A dual-tower model can approach many 240 mm AIOs in practical use, and a failed fan is straightforward to replace. The trade-offs are a bulky heatsink, possible RAM or side-panel conflicts, and less peak capacity than a good large radiator under sustained high power. A large heatsink can also make transporting a system more awkward.

An AIO moves most of the cooler’s bulk to the radiator and can provide more headroom with a 280/360 mm radiator under sustained heavy loads. It may make sense for a high-power i9 or a case designed around radiator cooling. It adds a pump, tubing, radiator, more cables and more installation constraints. Radiator and fan placement also influence both CPU and GPU temperatures. An AIO is not maintenance-free, though it generally involves less routine work than a custom liquid loop.

For gaming, noise can matter as much as a small temperature difference. Compare idle, gaming and long-load behavior rather than assuming the cooler at the top of a maximum-speed chart will be the quietest. Noise-normalized testing, such as the comparisons in GamersNexus’s roundup, is useful context, but your case and fan curves still affect the result.

LGA1700 compatibility checklist

  1. Confirm the socket mounting hardware. Look specifically for LGA1700 support and the correct backplate, standoffs and screws. LGA1200 compatibility alone is not enough; the sockets use different mounting geometry. ARCTIC notes that the move to LGA1700 required new mounting kits, and its compatibility page lists supported products. Older stock may need a separate kit.
  2. Check case clearance. Compare the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height with the cooler’s height. For the Peerless Assassin 120 SE, use roughly 155 mm as the cooler-height reference, then allow for a front fan raised over tall memory.
  3. Check memory and motherboard clearance. Look for conflicts with the first DIMM slot, VRM heatsinks and M.2 heatsinks. A fan shifted upward can turn a paper-fit cooler into a side-panel collision.
  4. Check every radiator dimension. For an AIO, confirm radiator length, thickness, fan thickness and the specific top or front mounting position. A front radiator can reduce graphics-card space; a top radiator may conflict with motherboard heatsinks or memory.
  5. Verify the exact retail revision. Do not buy based on a product name or a photo alone if the listing does not confirm LGA1700 hardware. Physical alignment is not proof that the standoff height and mounting pressure are correct.

LGA1700 contact frames are optional accessories, not a required cooler purchase. Improper installation can damage components or affect warranty coverage; do not fit one unless you understand the procedure and its risks. A frame does not compensate for an inadequate cooler, poor case airflow or excessive CPU power.

Installation, tuning and troubleshooting

  1. Install the correct mount and paste. Follow the cooler maker’s LGA1700 instructions, apply thermal paste as directed and tighten the mount evenly. If temperatures are unexpectedly high, remounting carefully is more useful than immediately buying an accessory.
  2. Connect the right headers. Connect an air cooler fan to the CPU fan header. Follow the AIO manual for pump and radiator-fan headers, then confirm the pump is detected and running as intended.
  3. Set a sensible fan curve. Avoid a curve that is needlessly loud at idle, but make sure fans ramp for sustained load. For an AIO, tune pump and radiator fans according to the manufacturer’s guidance; pump noise may not respond to the same curve as radiator fans.
  4. Check motherboard power behavior. In BIOS, review PL1/PL2 or equivalent limits and settings such as multicore enhancement or manufacturer-enhanced turbo. Also review voltage and load-line settings. A BIOS reset or update can change these settings, so two otherwise similar PCs may run a CPU at very different power.
  5. Test consistently and monitor more than temperature. Run a repeatable game or workload and observe CPU temperature, package power, clock speed and any thermal-throttling indication. Include a sustained productivity test if that is how you use the PC. A short game session does not establish sustained-load cooling performance.

A high reported temperature alone does not prove a fault. It may reflect normal turbo behavior or a permissive power limit. If the CPU is throttling, clocks collapse or temperatures rise unusually quickly, check the fan/pump connection, mounting contact, paste, case airflow and power settings. A conservative fan curve can explain noise or temperature behavior without implying a defective cooler; so can a motherboard running the CPU with limits removed.

Final picks by use case

  • Most i5-12600K/KF gaming PCs: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, after checking case and RAM clearance.
  • i7-12700K/KF gaming and general use: Peerless Assassin for value; Noctua NH-D15 G2 if premium air cooling, support and refinement justify the price.
  • i9-12900K/KF with sustained all-core work: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 if it fits; otherwise use a substantial air cooler with deliberate power tuning or choose the largest radiator the case supports.
  • Locked i3/i5: ARCTIC Freezer 36 or another suitable single tower; do not spend for cooling capacity the workload does not need.
  • Very compact case: Noctua NH-L9i-17xx only when its clearance advantage is necessary, with realistic power limits and airflow.
