Best Linux Distribution for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream

Ubuntu LTS is a sensible starting point for OBS on Linux, but no distribution is proven best for 24/7 4K60 YouTube streaming. Encoder support, upload capacity, testing, and recovery matter more.

For a straightforward Linux setup, start with a supported Ubuntu LTS release and OBS Studio—but there is no established evidence that Ubuntu, or any other Linux distribution, is the best or most reliable choice for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream. The distribution is only one part of the system: your GPU encoder, driver, OBS build, sustained upload speed, and recovery plan determine whether the stream can hold its target. Treat Ubuntu as a practical starting point, not a performance winner, and test your actual hardware before leaving it on air.

Why Ubuntu LTS is a practical starting point, not a proven winner

OBS documents an Ubuntu installation route and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. That makes Ubuntu a reasonable default if you want a familiar, documented path to an OBS installation. The official guidance does not establish that Ubuntu outperforms Fedora, Debian, or another Linux distribution for streaming reliability or 4K60 performance. Choose a supported release that works with your GPU vendor’s drivers and the OBS build you intend to run, then validate the complete setup on the machine itself.

Linux setup OBS installation guidance What the evidence establishes
Ubuntu OBS documents an Ubuntu installation route. A documented install path, not proof of better streaming performance or uptime.
Other Linux distributions OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. An installation option, not a distribution-specific reliability ranking.

OBS’s Linux installation guidance is dated 2021, so check its current instructions and your distribution’s supported release before installing. The same caution applies to older compatibility notes: packaging and graphics support can change.

Check the machine before choosing the distribution

Minimum OBS compatibility is not a 4K60 guarantee

OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X Window System or Wayland as basic Linux/Unix requirements. It also cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS. These are compatibility floors—not specifications for a stable 4K60 broadcast. CPU load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A simple loop of prerecorded footage puts a different workload on the machine than a game capture with overlays, transitions, and several live sources. See the OBS system requirements.

Confirm that OBS can use the intended hardware encoder

OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video as hardware-encoding paths. Hardware encoding can move video-encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU components, but availability and quality depend on the encoder generation, driver, OBS build, and chosen settings. Confirm that the encoder appears in the OBS build installed on the exact machine; do not assume that a GPU family name alone guarantees a usable Linux encoder.

OBS’s hardware article lists GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series (Maxwell) and later for NVENC support, and identifies 6th-generation NVENC (Turing), including GTX 1650 revision 2 and later, in its best-results guidance. It lists Intel Quick Sync beginning with Intel Core i 2xxx and recommends Haswell/Core i 4xxx or newer because of quality concerns with early QSV generations. These are compatibility notes from an OBS article dated 2022, not current buying recommendations. Check current driver and encoder support for the particular hardware before purchasing or relying on it. OBS also notes that earlier encoder generations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software x264 at its default veryfast preset. Read the dated OBS hardware encoding guidance.

Account for the whole scene, not just the video encoder

Before committing to a distribution, run OBS with the actual scene you plan to leave live: representative video motion, audio, overlays, and any capture sources. Watch CPU and GPU load, dropped frames, and stream health during a sustained test. A successful desktop installation or a short preview does not demonstrate that the machine will hold 4K60 continuously.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 input settings and test the upload path

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 input at up to 60 fps. Its recommended incoming video bitrates at 2160p (4K) and 60 fps differ by codec:

YouTube input target Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
2160p (4K) at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps, H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC Not stated in YouTube’s cited recommendation 24 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps, H.264 Not stated in YouTube’s cited recommendation 34 Mbps

These figures are for the incoming video stream; they are not guarantees about what a home connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before going live. Measure the connection under realistic conditions, leave margin for variation and audio, and confirm that the stream stays healthy for an extended test. If your connection cannot reliably carry the recommended 4K60 target, try 1440p60 or a lower frame rate and test again rather than expecting a different distribution to fix a bandwidth limit. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

OBS settings to verify

  1. Select the YouTube connection: In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and use RTMPS where available. Generate or select the stream key in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup and enter it in OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a screenshot, log, or public configuration.
  2. Choose the target mode: In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution and frame rate for the intended 4K60 or fallback test. Then open Settings > Output, select the streaming output controls, choose a supported encoder, and set the codec and bitrate for the target. OBS labels can vary by version and available hardware encoders; verify the selected codec and output in the installed build.
  3. Use a constant rate: Set rate control to CBR. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies no more than four seconds. Use the recommended bitrate for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec in the table above.
  4. Run a representative preflight: Start a private or unlisted test stream with the audio and motion you expect on the real broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s statistics while it runs. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and testing with representative audio and movement before going live.

YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple viewer output formats. A 4K input therefore does not mean every viewer receives 4K; their available playback quality depends on YouTube’s output and their connection or device. YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K streams, which use normal latency.

Plan for unattended operation and recovery

A 24/7 stream is an operations problem as well as an encoding problem. A distribution does not by itself guarantee that OBS, the network, or YouTube will remain connected. Before leaving a Linux machine unattended, create a known-good recovery path and decide how you will notice and respond to failures.

  • Reserve a maintenance window for OS, driver, and OBS updates. Test significant changes before applying them to the live machine, and retain a way to return to a known-good boot or configuration.
  • Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health, along with the machine’s CPU, GPU, temperature, storage, and network state. Set expectations for who will respond if the stream stops or degrades.
  • Keep the stream key private and document how to replace it if it is exposed.
  • Use video and audio you have the rights to stream. Check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization requirements for your content; a technically healthy stream is not a substitute for having the necessary rights or meeting platform rules.

Troubleshoot the likely failure point first

Symptom Likely cause to check Practical next step
OBS does not show the intended hardware encoder The installed OBS build, graphics driver, or hardware does not expose that encoder. Check the driver and OBS build for the exact GPU, update only through a supported route, then verify the encoder is available before retesting.
Frames drop or stream health degrades The upload path cannot sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder/system is overloaded. Check YouTube stream health and OBS statistics; test the upload path, reduce scene workload, or lower resolution/frame rate and repeat the test.
CPU load is high despite choosing hardware encoding The scene may be demanding, or OBS may not be using the expected hardware encoder. Confirm the active encoder in OBS, simplify the scene for diagnosis, and retest with representative motion and audio.
Quality is poor at the selected bitrate The codec, encoder generation, motion complexity, or bitrate may not suit the content. Confirm the chosen codec and YouTube recommendation; test a newer supported hardware encoder if available, or use a different resolution/codec target and compare test streams.
Stream disconnects after an OS, driver, or OBS change A software update may have changed encoder availability or stability. Use the known-good recovery path, restore the previous working configuration if needed, and validate the changed component in a test stream before returning it to continuous use.
