For an interactive class, start with a meeting platform; for a polished, instructor-led broadcast or webinar, compare production studios. Zoom Workplace for Education is the clearest fit in the supplied options for schools and universities that need a managed classroom environment, subject to its education-license rules and minimum purchase. StreamYard emphasizes browser-based production and webinar features. OBS Studio can add a composed camera-and-slides scene to compatible meeting software, but it is a production layer—not a classroom platform. No cited source establishes one universally best tool or proves that one produces better learning outcomes.
Choose software by the way students will participate
First decide whether students need to speak and interact in a shared meeting, watch a produced presentation, or do both. Then check capacity, access requirements, recording, administration and the license terms that apply to your school or organization.
| Workflow | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom Workplace for Education | School or university classes centered on meetings and pedagogical interaction. | Education-license eligibility, minimum license count, participant capacity, meeting duration, cloud storage and any streaming configuration. |
| StreamYard | Instructor-led broadcasts or webinars where browser access, branding, guest handling, multistreaming or recorded output matter. | Free-plan restrictions, current price, viewer and recording limits, and whether an organization needs a Business plan. |
| OBS Studio with meeting software | Teachers who want to compose a scene—such as camera plus slides—and present it inside a meeting app. | Setup and operating-system compatibility; the meeting app still handles the class interaction. |
Zoom Workplace for Education: a managed classroom option
Zoom describes Workplace for Education as a communications and collaboration platform for schools and universities. Its School and Campus offering includes meetings, chat, whiteboard, cloud storage and other workplace features. The education pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, listed School and Campus at $10 per user per month billed annually and School and Campus Plus at $15 per user per month billed annually; both had a 20-license minimum. The same comparison listed 30 hours per meeting and 300 participants for those plans. Enterprise was listed with 500 participants and 500 webinar attendees. Prices and packaging can change, so confirm current terms with Zoom before budgeting. See Zoom’s education plans and terms.
Check whether the education license fits your use
Zoom states: “Zoom Education users are intended for student, faculty, staff and alumni for pedagogical interaction within a classroom environment, or the administration thereof and may not be used for any commercial purpose.” This is not a generic low-cost commercial webinar license. Schools should confirm that their planned use, procurement process and account setup meet current terms.

Streaming a Zoom class to a custom site
Zoom Support says custom live streaming must be enabled by an account administrator. The documented requirements include a Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise account, a licensed host, custom streaming enabled and the desktop app on Windows or macOS. Zoom recommends enabling HD video for higher quality. Streaming a webinar also requires a Zoom Webinars license. Requirements can vary with account setup and client version; check the current support instructions and test before class. Zoom’s custom streaming guidance.

When On-Air is a good fit—and a moderation caveat
StreamYard On-Air supports a hosted or embedded webinar page, registration forms and viewer chat. Its help guidance says viewers do not need to download software or create an account. Chat, when enabled, is visible to all participants, with no per-comment visibility control; plan moderation accordingly if students will use it. OBS Studio: a production layer for a meeting app
OBS Studio can compose a camera, slides and other sources into a scene, then share that scene as a virtual camera with a compatible application. OBS’s guide, dated August 31, 2022, identifies Zoom as an example of an application that can accept the output. OBS provides modes for the program, preview, a selected scene or a selected source. The conferencing app—not OBS—still supplies the meeting room and class interaction. OBS Virtual Camera Guide.
Test the virtual camera before class
- Install OBS and confirm that its virtual camera works with your operating system. OBS documents platform-specific setup; on Linux, virtual-camera use depends on v4l2loopback.
- In OBS, prepare the scene you want students to see, such as a camera beside slides, and start the virtual camera.
- In your meeting app’s camera settings, select the OBS virtual camera, then check framing, text readability and audio routing in a test meeting.
- Keep the meeting app’s normal camera available as a fallback. If the virtual camera fails, switch back before students join.
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance notes that macOS compatibility depends on the version in use. Check the current instructions for your operating system and meeting client rather than assuming that an older guide covers every current setup. OBS virtual-camera troubleshooting.

Compare the details that affect a real class
- Interaction: Decide whether students need to join a meeting and participate directly, or primarily watch a presentation and use webinar chat.
- Access: Ask whether students must install an app, sign in or register. StreamYard says On-Air viewers need neither a download nor an account; check the access flow for any other option you consider.
- Capacity and duration: Match the plan’s participant or viewer cap and meeting duration to the class. The cited Zoom education comparison lists 300 participants and 30 hours per meeting for School and School and Campus Plus; StreamYard lists a 100-viewer On-Air limit for Advanced.
- Recording: Confirm what recording is included, where it is stored, how long it remains available and whether your institution’s policies permit the intended use.
- Production control: StreamYard offers studio-oriented branding and guest handling; OBS offers scene composition but requires setup; Zoom’s education offering centers on a managed collaboration environment.
- Administration and terms: Institutional licensing, domain requirements, account controls and procurement may matter more than an individual plan’s headline price.
- Total cost: Compare the actual billing period, minimum seats, required webinar or streaming licenses, storage and any organizational plan—not just a monthly figure.
Copyright and class recordings
Before playing music, video clips or other third-party material in a live lesson or recording, confirm that your use is permitted. A teaching context does not by itself establish permission, and rules depend on the material, jurisdiction and circumstances. Also check your institution’s requirements for recording, student privacy, consent, retention and sharing. Neither a production studio nor a meeting app substitutes for those checks.
Recommendation
- Choose Zoom Workplace for Education as the first option to evaluate when your school needs a managed, interactive classroom and can meet the education-license conditions and 20-license minimum shown on the page accessed October 3, 2026.
- Choose StreamYard to evaluate for a produced, instructor-led broadcast or webinar where branding and a browser-based viewer experience matter. Confirm current plan limits, prices and organizational eligibility.
- Add OBS to your existing meeting workflow when you need more control over the composed camera-and-slide image and are comfortable testing compatibility. It does not replace the meeting platform.
These choices address live teaching workflows; they are not interchangeable with services that keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously.
