For most live fitness classes, the best streaming software depends on whether you need to coach participants or broadcast to an audience. Use Zoom when seeing participants and responding to them is central; use YouTube Live for public reach; consider Vimeo for branded events and production controls, or Restream when you need to send one production to multiple destinations. Before choosing, check account and plan requirements, test your camera framing and audio, and clear the music you plan to play.
Choose software for the way your class works
An open public workout, a member-only session, a paid workshop, and a technique-focused class do not have the same needs. Decide first whether participants need to be visible to the instructor, whether viewers should find the class publicly, and whether you need event branding or distribution to several platforms.
- Interactive coaching: A meeting-style workflow such as Zoom is a natural starting point when you need to see participants and respond to them. - Public distribution: YouTube Live supports streaming from mobile, webcam, encoder, and console workflows. Its horizontal and vertical formats differ in discovery and available features, so choose the orientation for your audience and presentation. YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- Branded events: Vimeo describes multi-camera production and event features. Livestream Studio and event capabilities depend on the plan; confirm current eligibility before committing. Vimeo Live and Vimeo OTT pricing and plans.
- Several destinations: Restream can distribute output from tools such as OBS and offers a browser Studio and aggregated chat. Channel limits and features depend on plan; its free tier includes two channels and branding restrictions. Restream plans.

Plan the class setup
Frame the full movement area
Set the camera far enough back to show the movements you will teach, rather than framing only your face. Practice the routine in frame and check whether limbs leave the picture during floor work or wide movements. Les Mills instructor guidance suggests testing the camera position and notes that a phone’s rear camera may provide a better picture; verify the actual framing before class. Make speech intelligible over the music
Use a camera-capable device and listen for voice clarity while moving, not only while standing close to the device. A microphone accessory may help if the built-in microphone cannot capture speech clearly, but it is not automatically a required purchase. Run a test and review it
Hold a private or test session before the scheduled workout. Replay it to check framing, sound balance between voice and music, and timing. This is practical instructor guidance, not a controlled software test. Les Mills instructor guide.
Check the connection and ingest setup
If you use an encoder or a multistream service, confirm the destination’s ingest details and stream key in advance, and make sure the network has sufficient upload capacity. Restream’s Zoom integration guidance recommends 4 Mbps upload for 720p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p30; those figures apply to that integration’s guidance, not every platform or setup. Decide whether to keep a recording
Recording and retention depend on platform configuration and plan. Vimeo describes end-of-stream archive behavior for OTT workflows; verify the specific event and account settings rather than assuming every stream is retained. Vimeo Live. A cited Les Mills program page says its referenced classes cannot be saved or recorded; that is program-specific, not a general rule for streaming platforms. Les Mills livestreaming guidance.
Handle music rights before going live
Technical ability to transmit a song does not mean you have permission to use it in a class. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A creator’s claimed licence may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Les Mills instructor tips advise streaming workouts only with royalty-free music. Les Mills instructor guide. That advice does not settle every territory’s licensing requirements. Confirm permissions with the relevant music owners, collecting societies, employer or club, and streaming platform for your location and class model. Regional licensing examples on provider pages should not be treated as universal or necessarily current rules.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, then review the account’s live-stream eligibility. YouTube eligibility requirements.
- The stream is interrupted when music plays: YouTube may have detected third-party copyrighted content. Stop using the matched material and resolve rights and channel allowlisting questions with the relevant rights holder; a licence claim alone may not prevent interruption. YouTube copyright guidance.
- Participants cannot see or hear the class as expected: Check whether the chosen Zoom meeting, webinar, or custom-stream configuration provides the interaction and audience experience you intended. Confirm account eligibility and administrator settings. Zoom custom live streaming.
- Your movements leave the frame or your voice is hard to hear: Reposition the camera, rehearse the full workout, and review a test recording. Adjust the microphone setup if speech is unclear while moving. Les Mills instructor guide.
- A destination is missing from a multistream: Check the Restream plan’s simultaneous channel limit and the configuration for each destination before the event. Restream plans.
- A Vimeo production feature is unavailable: Recheck the current plan entitlement for Livestream Studio or the event feature you need; plan contents can change. Vimeo plans.
