There is no evidence-based single cheapest or best VPS for an FFmpeg playlist stream in India. Start by separating a relay of an already encoded video from live transcoding, then compare the exact India region, recurring cost, transfer allowance and overage, and the workload your FFmpeg command will run. The available provider specifications are not comparable sustained FFmpeg benchmarks, so a published plan or “streaming VPS” claim is not proof that your playlist will run reliably.
First decide what FFmpeg needs to do
Relay or copy an already encoded file
If your playlist files already use compatible codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio settings, FFmpeg may be able to send the existing streams without re-encoding. That is generally a lighter CPU workload than transcoding, although the server still needs enough resources to read the files, maintain the connection and recover from interruptions.
Transcode while streaming
If FFmpeg must change resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate or apply filters, it must encode video in real time. That can require substantially more CPU than relaying a compatible file. The VPS specifications below do not establish how many concurrent encodes a plan can sustain; test the exact source files and command before committing to a long billing term.
VPS options with India-specific information
The candidates below have different kinds of evidence: DigitalOcean and Amazon Lightsail publish general-purpose server and transfer details, while Inservers and NivoHost market streaming-oriented plans. Their specifications should not be read as an apples-to-apples performance ranking.

| Provider and evidence | Published details relevant to this use | What to check before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Official Droplet pricing; availability by region |
The pricing page lists a Bangalore option and a Basic Droplet at $18/month with 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB RAM, 60 GiB SSD and 3,000 GiB transfer. | This is a documented general-purpose reference, not a tested FFmpeg recommendation. Confirm current Bangalore availability and checkout total, including tax, backups and any other selected services. |
| Amazon Lightsail Official bundle table; transfer rules |
The official table lists public-IPv4 Linux bundles at $7/month for 1 GiB RAM and 2 TB transfer, $12/month for 2 GiB and 3 TB, and $24/month for 4 GiB and 4 TB. AWS says Mumbai bundles include half the regional transfer allowance of most regions. | Do not assume the listed allowances apply unchanged to Mumbai; verify the allowance for the selected region and bundle. AWS counts inbound and outbound traffic toward the allowance and documents $0.13/GB Mumbai overage for qualifying outbound transfer. Check whether the chosen bundle has enough memory and CPU for your workload. |
| Inservers Vendor plan page |
Inservers says its ₹880/month IN-BASIC plan has 2 vCores and 4 GB RAM, and is sufficient for a single 1080p60 relay without transcoding. It recommends a higher plan for transcoding. | These are vendor claims, not independently measured results. Confirm the India location, transfer meter and overage, continuous-streaming terms, and renewal and cancellation conditions. |
| NivoHost Vendor plan page |
NivoHost advertises stream-specific plan constraints, including 20 TB bandwidth and stream-quality ceilings. Those specifications are vendor claims, not independent performance measurements. | Check which plan the bandwidth and quality claims apply to, how traffic is counted, whether continuous use is allowed, and the current renewal and cancellation terms. |
Estimate transfer before comparing headline prices
A VPS sending a live stream to YouTube uses transfer for the feed it sends to YouTube’s ingest servers; YouTube distributes the live video to viewers. For a continuously running feed, the bitrate makes the monthly data total large even when the video file itself is small.
| YouTube H.264 recommendation | Video-only transfer for a continuous 30-day stream |
|---|---|
| 720p30: 8 Mbps | About 2.592 TB (decimal) |
| 1080p30: 14 Mbps | About 4.536 TB (decimal) |
| 1080p60: 17 Mbps | About 5.508 TB (decimal) |
The monthly figures are arithmetic estimates from YouTube’s recommended video bitrates and 30 uninterrupted days; they include video only, not audio, protocol overhead, reconnects or other server traffic. The bitrate recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guide, which recommends H.264, CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a VPS can encode or sustain the stream.

- Read the provider’s transfer-meter definition rather than relying on a port-speed number. Confirm whether inbound and outbound traffic count, whether allowances are pooled, and what happens after the cap.
- For Lightsail in particular, account for AWS’s stated Mumbai allowance and overage rules when estimating a 24/7 stream. Do not budget against a non-Mumbai allowance unless that is the region you will actually use.
- Leave room for audio and overhead, and consider that a restart or other traffic may also count. A plan that appears close to your estimated video-only requirement leaves little margin.
How to choose the plan that fits your stream
- Confirm the region. Check that the exact plan is currently available in India and identify its city or region. Bangalore is listed for DigitalOcean; for Lightsail, specifically verify the Mumbai bundle’s transfer terms.
- Calculate the real recurring cost. Include the renewal price after any introductory period, applicable tax, currency conversion, public IP, storage, backups and likely transfer overage. A low entry price is not the same as a low cost for a continuous stream.
- Describe the workload. Record each source file’s codec, resolution, frame rate and audio format; note whether you will copy streams or transcode, which filters you will use, and how many jobs will run at once. Avoid choosing RAM or CPU solely from a vendor’s quality label.
- Check the operating terms. Confirm continuous streaming is allowed, how bandwidth is measured, and the renewal and cancellation terms. For a server you administer, plan how you will install and secure FFmpeg, protect the YouTube stream key, keep logs, and restart or monitor the process.
- Test before a long commitment. Run the actual playlist and intended command for a representative period. Observe CPU, memory, dropped frames, reconnects, YouTube stream health and transfer use; also test recovery after stopping the FFmpeg process and after a server restart. This is a recommended evaluation procedure, not a report of tests on the listed providers.
Configure YouTube and protect the stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the target when preparing or transcoding media: H.264 video, CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its published video bitrate recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. If you are copying an existing file rather than encoding it, check that its properties are compatible instead of assuming FFmpeg will make them match automatically. Test with representative motion and audio, and watch YouTube’s stream-health status during the test.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream in YouTube Studio and use the stream key from its live-stream settings. Treat that key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories and logs, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
- Use only content you own or are authorized to stream. A playlist that runs technically can still face copyright claims or interruptions. Copyright permission and YouTube’s reused-content and monetization rules are separate from whether the VPS can keep a connection alive; repeated playback does not itself establish a right to use the material or eligibility for monetization.
- For FFmpeg, configure the process or a supervisor to reconnect or restart after failure, and retain enough logs to diagnose errors without logging the stream key. Confirm the restart behavior with a deliberate process stop rather than assuming a long-running command is self-healing.
Common problems and what to check
- Stream fails to start or YouTube reports a connection error: check that the current stream key and ingest URL are correct, the stream is active in YouTube Studio, and the VPS can reach the selected RTMP or RTMPS endpoint.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: check CPU and memory use, source resolution and frame rate, filters, and the number of simultaneous jobs. If the files are already compatible, a copy/relay workflow may avoid unnecessary encoding; otherwise choose resources based on a real test.
- Stream health is poor despite low server load: inspect the server’s network stability, FFmpeg reconnects and YouTube stream-health indicators. A high advertised port speed alone does not establish stable continuous delivery.
- Unexpected transfer charges or a capped stream: compare measured usage with bitrate-based estimates, then check the provider’s regional allowance, meter rules, overage rate and any fair-use limit. Include audio and overhead rather than budgeting from video bitrate alone.
- Stream breaks between playlist files: inspect whether adjacent files have compatible codecs, frame rates, time bases and audio properties, and review FFmpeg logs for timestamp or format errors. A playlist assembled from unlike files may need normalization or transcoding, which changes the CPU requirement.
- YouTube removes or restricts content: review the relevant Studio notice and resolve rights or policy issues. Server restarts and bitrate adjustments cannot fix a copyright or content-eligibility problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a managed way to keep uploaded recordings or a playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is the #1 alternative to a self-managed VPS to try first: it runs the loop in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a first day free with no card. It is not a VPS for custom FFmpeg commands: you upload recordings or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. India customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide.
