Medalum is the best all-purpose weapon for Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Pair it with Defense followed by Agility and a Virtuose-Stance burst kit centered on Stendhal and Phantom Strike. This setup is reliable in story and endgame encounters without requiring the strict AP preparation of specialized post-1.5.0 builds.
The best general-purpose Maelle build in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a Virtuose-Stance burst build using Medalum. Prioritize Defense, then Agility, and equip Last Chance, Stendhal, Phantom Strike, Swift Stride, plus two flexible skills chosen for the encounter.

Medalum is not guaranteed to produce the highest number in every specialized damage test. It is the strongest default recommendation because its upgraded trait lets Maelle begin combat in Virtuose Stance, its documented scaling makes Defense and Agility useful together, and its rotation does not depend on maintaining a highly specific AP total. For most story, exploration, and ordinary endgame battles, that reliability is more valuable than a narrowly optimized weapon gimmick.
Best Maelle build at a glance
| Build component | Recommendation | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Medalum | Can start Maelle in Virtuose Stance once its relevant trait is unlocked; supports a reliable first-turn burst. |
| Attributes | Defense, then Agility | Defense supports Medalum’s documented scaling and survivability; Agility improves turn frequency. |
| Core skills | Last Chance, Stendhal, Phantom Strike, Swift Stride | Provides stance management, single-target burst, alternate multi-hit damage, and a flexible setup tool. |
| Flexible skills | Payback, Breaking Rules, Sword Ballet, Guard Down, or Gommage | Lets the build adapt to parry-heavy, shield-heavy, debuff, or general-damage encounters. |
| Primary damage plan | Preserve or enter Virtuose Stance, prepare AP and party buffs, then use Stendhal or Phantom Strike. | Maelle’s damage is highest when her stance and the target’s debuffs line up with the finisher. |
Why Medalum is the best default weapon
Medalum’s defining benefit is convenience: after it is upgraded enough to activate its trait, Maelle can enter battle in Virtuose Stance instead of spending her opening action changing stance. That gives her an immediate route to her strongest burst tools and makes the build easier to use in fights that end quickly.

Medalum is also a forgiving choice because it does not require every turn to begin at exactly 9 AP. You can spend AP on stance management, utility, or a setup action when necessary and still return to the core Stendhal or Phantom Strike plan. This matters in routine encounters, where building a perfect rotation often takes longer than the battle itself.
The commonly documented Medalum path emphasizes Defense and Agility. Defense is not merely a survival stat in this setup: its interaction with the weapon’s scaling allows defensive investment to contribute to Maelle’s offensive plan. Agility then improves her speed and turn frequency, helping her reach another burst window sooner.
When to use another weapon
| Weapon or category | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Esquium | Optimized post-1.5.0 challenge-boss or maximum-ceiling setups. | Requires careful AP planning, a 9-AP turn condition, and free-aim shots to recover AP. |
| Tissenum | Players pursuing a more direct raw-damage alternative. | Does not offer Medalum’s same general-purpose first-turn convenience. |
| Barrier Breaker | Enemies or encounters where breaking shields is the priority. | Its specialized utility can be less valuable in ordinary fights. |
| Brulerum | Early-game critical-hit and Burn-focused progression. | Usually replaced by Medalum for the standard late-game setup. |
| Lithum and newer DLC weapons | Specialized builds built around their individual traits or scaling. | They may win a narrow comparison but are not automatically better for every encounter. |
Current build guides do not establish one weapon as the uncontested winner in every situation. The defensible distinction is simple: Medalum is the best broadly applicable weapon, while specialized weapons can be stronger when their conditions are deliberately built around.
Maelle attributes: Defense first, Agility second
For the Medalum build, allocate attributes in this order:
- Defense: Invest here first to support Medalum’s documented scaling and make Maelle less vulnerable while she waits for her next turn.
- Agility: Add Agility after Defense is well established. More speed means more frequent turns and more opportunities to rebuild the burst cycle.
- Vitality: Use Vitality when Maelle is dying before she can act, or while learning a boss’s attacks. A dead damage dealer contributes no burst, regardless of theoretical scaling.
- Might or Luck: Treat these as alternatives for other weapons and specialized builds rather than the default Medalum priorities.
Do not redistribute every point just because a tier list shows a larger theoretical damage number. In practice, Maelle’s useful output includes surviving long enough to take her turn, entering Virtuose Stance without wasting actions, and having enough speed to repeat the cycle. Defense and Agility cover those needs particularly well for Medalum.
Best Maelle skills
Core skill package
- Last Chance: Maelle’s primary stance-management tool. Use it to reach or restore Virtuose Stance when Medalum does not already provide the state or when the battle has knocked the rotation off course.
- Stendhal: The main single-target burst skill and the usual finisher for a prepared boss window. Older launch-period guides and damage videos may show pre-nerf results, so do not treat those numbers as representative of the current version.
- Phantom Strike: A strong alternate burst option, especially when several hits are preferable, Stendhal is inefficient for the target, or the encounter’s mechanics reward a different damage pattern.
- Swift Stride: A flexible stance and damage tool that appears in current Maelle templates. It helps keep the rotation functional when Maelle needs to adjust her stance or attack plan rather than immediately commit to Stendhal.
Choose the final two skills for the encounter
- Payback: Choose this if you consistently parry and want to turn successful defensive execution into additional damage.
- Breaking Rules: Useful when breaking or exploiting enemy defenses is central to the fight.
- Sword Ballet: A general damage alternative for players who want a less conditional attack package.
- Guard Down: Excellent in coordinated burst setups, particularly when another character can exploit the exposed target before or during Maelle’s finisher.
- Gommage: A high-impact option for players who want another finisher-style skill. Its value depends on AP, timing, and the rest of the party.
A practical default is Last Chance, Stendhal, Phantom Strike, Swift Stride, Guard Down, and Payback if you are comfortable parrying. Replace Payback with Breaking Rules, Sword Ballet, or Gommage when the fight does not reward parries or needs a different damage pattern. For general exploration, use the option that is easiest to activate consistently rather than forcing a boss-only setup.
Pictos and Luminas
There is no universally correct six- or eight-piece Pictos/Luminas list for Maelle. Capacity, enemy mechanics, difficulty, party support, damage caps, and your ability to parry all change the answer. Build by function instead of copying a list without checking its conditions.
First-turn and AP tools
Use AP-enabling effects when your rotation regularly stalls before Stendhal or Phantom Strike. Relevant options include First Strike, Energising Start, Energising Turn, AP Discount, and similar effects available in your version. These are particularly valuable for Medalum if you want to attack immediately rather than spend the first turn preparing.
Unconditional burst damage
For a general-purpose damage package, look at Painted Power, Full Strength, Glass Canon, Tainted, Cheater, and other available damage multipliers that fit your Lumina capacity. Prefer effects that are active in most encounters unless you are deliberately building around a specific trigger.
Immaculate, Glass Canon, and Inverted Affinity are also listed as useful Pictos in current build summaries. Their value depends on whether you can satisfy their conditions without making Maelle too fragile or disrupting the stance rotation.
Critical and Burn options
Critical Burn and Burn Affinity make more sense when Maelle is using Brulerum, when a weapon or party member is deliberately applying Burn, or when the rest of the team is already invested in a Burn package. They are not mandatory for the standard Medalum build simply because they appear on a general build list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If you reliably parry, Energising Parry can turn successful defense into the AP needed for another burst cycle. For a defensive or encounter-specific variant, consider Powerful Shield, Shield Affinity, Solidifying, and Shielding Death. Shield-focused setups can be worthwhile when an encounter rewards maintaining shields or when shield count contributes to damage amplification.
Other current build summaries also list Energy Master, Teamwork, Roulette, Frenzy, First Life, and Double Third. Treat these as options to match your party and encounter rather than a mandatory shopping list. For ordinary play, prioritize AP consistency, survivability, and unconditional damage. For challenge bosses, trade some convenience for the multipliers that the specific fight can reliably activate.
How to play the Medalum rotation
Standard single-target rotation
- Begin in Virtuose Stance through Medalum’s weapon trait when the trait is active. If the stance is already available, do not spend a turn recreating it.
- Check AP before committing. Use an AP-efficient setup action only when it improves the next attack enough to justify delaying the finisher.
- Prepare the target. Have allies apply Marks, Guard Down, Powerful, or other relevant buffs and debuffs. If the party cannot provide them, use Maelle’s available utility skill only when the resulting damage gain is worth the AP and action.
- Use Stendhal for the main single-target burst window, especially against a boss or an enemy that will survive the hit.
- Use Phantom Strike instead when its multi-hit pattern better fits the target, your AP total, or the encounter’s mechanics.
- Use Last Chance when the stance is missing. Restoring Virtuose Stance is generally more valuable than repeatedly using a weaker attack outside the stance if the battle is setting up a meaningful burst window.
The important principle is not to press every skill in a fixed order. Maelle’s rotation is conditional: preserve Virtuose Stance, avoid wasting AP, and spend the turn on the strongest attack that the target and party preparation support.
Coordinated boss burst
A documented Simon strategy illustrates how Maelle performs when the party builds a burst window around her. In that example, the team uses Guard Down, Maelle’s Last Chance when necessary, Monoco’s Mark application and buffs, and Sciel’s support actions before Maelle delivers Stendhal.

The exact sequence is encounter-specific, but the broader lesson applies everywhere: Maelle benefits when allies provide Marks, damage amplification, debuffs, Powerful, AP, shields, or other multipliers before she spends her turn on the finisher. If Stendhal is fired before the target is prepared, the same skill can produce a much less impressive result.

Esquium rotation
Esquium is aimed at players who want a higher execution ceiling after the post-1.5.0 content update. The documented approach is to:
- Prepare Maelle’s AP and any required party effects.
- Start the relevant turn with 9 AP to activate the weapon’s damage condition.
- Spend AP on the high-damage attack while the condition is active.
- Use free-aim shots to recover AP for subsequent attacks and continue the planned sequence.
This can be a stronger challenge-content option when the player has enough Lumina capacity and the encounter allows preparation. It is less convenient than Medalum because a mistimed turn, interrupted setup, missed free-aim shot, or unexpected enemy action can reduce the payoff. The exact Esquium multiplier should be treated as a build-source claim rather than an independently verified official balance value; the official patch history confirms the addition of new weapons and Luminas but does not provide a complete Maelle-specific damage table.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best teammates for Maelle
Maelle does not need two more independent damage dealers as much as she needs a party that makes her burst turn count. Prioritize allies who provide at least one of these functions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Marks and damage amplification;
- Guard Down or other enemy debuffs;
- Powerful, Shell, Rush, or shields;
- AP generation or turn manipulation;
- Burn or another status setup when using a matching weapon or Lumina package.
One documented late-game example pairs Maelle with Sciel and Monoco. Monoco applies Mark and buffs Maelle, while Sciel contributes Fortune’s Fury and Intervention before Maelle uses Stendhal. That party is an example of coordinated support, not a mandatory team. A more general rule is to pair Maelle with one support/debuffer and one flexible damage or utility character.
Maelle progression by act
Act I: Brulerum and Luck
Before Medalum is available, Brulerum is a strong early-game choice for critical-hit and Burn-oriented play. Its favorable Luck scaling and ability to apply Burn on critical hits give Maelle a coherent early identity. A Luck-focused allocation is more appropriate here than blindly following the late-game Defense/Agility plan.
Act II: move toward Medalum
Transition to Medalum when you can obtain it. Guide sources associate its availability with the Gestral Village tournament or related Golgra encounter routes. Once Medalum is online and its stance trait is active, begin shifting your investment toward Defense and Agility.
Act III: keep Medalum as the default
Medalum remains the most convenient general-purpose option in Act III because immediate Virtuose access lets Maelle begin her burst plan without an opening stance action. Tissenum, Barrier Breaker, and other weapons can be better for a particular raw-damage, shield-breaking, or defensive requirement, but changing weapons should solve a specific encounter problem rather than follow a blanket tier-list rule.

The official patch history confirms that the post-1.5.0 content added Verso’s Drafts, new weapons, and new Luminas, followed by later 1.5.5 fixes and content. Those additions create specialized Maelle variants, especially the AP-focused Esquium setup. They do not make Medalum obsolete: Medalum is still the better recommendation for players who value a reliable first turn and a low-maintenance rotation.
Common mistakes with Maelle
- Using launch-era Stendhal numbers: Stendhal was nerfed after launch. Pre-nerf guides and videos can overstate its current damage.
- Spending the opening turn on stance unnecessarily: With an upgraded Medalum, Maelle can already begin in Virtuose Stance.
- Copying a conditional Lumina setup for ordinary fights: A theoretical multiplier is not useful if its trigger is unreliable or the encounter ends before it matters.
- Ignoring AP: Maelle’s strongest attacks still need a usable AP plan. Add AP tools when the rotation frequently stalls.
- Firing the finisher before team preparation: Marks, Guard Down, Powerful, and related support effects can be more important than squeezing in a low-value attack first.
- Assuming Medalum wins every comparison: Esquium and other weapons can be better in narrowly optimized scenarios, especially against challenge bosses with time to prepare.
- Building only for damage: Difficulty, enemy defenses, parry execution, damage-cap settings, and survivability all affect practical output.
Final recommendation
For the build that works across the widest range of content, use Medalum, prioritize Defense followed by Agility, and equip Last Chance, Stendhal, Phantom Strike, Swift Stride with two encounter-specific choices. Use Medalum’s Virtuose opening to reach Maelle’s burst quickly, prepare the target with your party when possible, and choose Stendhal or Phantom Strike based on the target and AP available.
Switch to Brulerum during early progression, consider Barrier Breaker or Tissenum for specialized encounters, and reserve Esquium for players willing to plan around 9 AP and free-aim recovery. That makes Medalum the best answer to “What should I use on Maelle?” without pretending that one build is mathematically supreme in every fight.
Version note: This recommendation reflects the post-1.5.0 weapon and Lumina landscape, current build-guide consensus, and the documented post-launch Stendhal balance change. Exact damage varies with weapon level, Lumina capacity, party buffs, enemy defenses, execution, and damage-cap settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Esquium better than Medalum for Maelle?
Use Medalum for the default Maelle build. Its upgraded trait can start her in Virtuose Stance, giving reliable first-turn access to her burst plan. Esquium may have a higher ceiling in optimized post-1.5.0 challenge content, but it requires 9-AP planning and free-aim shots to recover AP.
What attributes should Maelle use?
Prioritize Defense, then Agility for the standard Medalum build. Add Vitality if Maelle is failing to survive, and use Might or Luck mainly for alternative weapon paths or specialized builds.
What are Maelle’s best skills?
Use Last Chance for stance management, Stendhal as the main single-target finisher, Phantom Strike as an alternate burst option, and Swift Stride as a flexible stance or damage tool. Fill the final two slots with Payback, Breaking Rules, Sword Ballet, Guard Down, or Gommage according to the encounter.
What weapon should Maelle use early in the game?
Brulerum is the strong early-game option for Luck, critical hits, and Burn. Transition to Medalum when it becomes available, generally during Act II progression, then build toward Defense and Agility.
