The right microphone stand depends on your desk, microphone and speaking position. A desk-clamp boom arm brings the mic toward you and swings away when you are done; a weighted-base stand avoids a clamp but takes up desk space. Before buying, check the complete mounted weight, thread and adapter, desk clearance, reach and cable routing. The product figures below are manufacturers’ specifications, not results of comparative hands-on testing.

Choose a stand style for your setup

Desk-clamp boom arms

A clamp arm is a practical choice for a seated streamer who wants to position a microphone near their mouth, then move it aside. Scissor-style arms attach to a desk or wall and allow flexible positioning. Check the clamp’s thickness range against your desk edge, and make sure the arm can reach around your monitor without obstructing your keyboard or controls.

Weighted-base desktop stands

A desktop stand sits on a flat surface, so it does not need a desk-edge clamp. In exchange, its base occupies working space and its reach may be shorter. It can suit a compact setup where the mic stays in one general area and there is room for the base.

Tripod boom stands

Consider a tripod boom when the microphone needs floor-standing placement or you want to use the stand away from your desk. Extending a tripod boom can shift its center of gravity and create a toppling risk; the legs can also become a floor trip hazard. For a fixed seated gaming setup, compare a desk arm or desktop base first.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check compatibility before you buy

Calculate the mounted weight

Compare the arm’s stated load range with the whole assembly: microphone plus shock mount, clip and any other accessories attached to the arm. A microphone’s bare weight is not enough to establish compatibility. Manufacturers specify different ranges, and a listed limit does not guarantee the same fit in every desk configuration.

Match the thread and adapter

Check the microphone mount’s thread against the stand’s thread and the adapters included in the box. Common microphone threads include 1/4, 3/8 and 5/8 inch, but a stand may need an adapter to fit your particular mic or mount. For a Shure SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+ or MV7X, Shure lists compatibility with its Gator arm through a threaded extension adapter; confirm your full mounting arrangement before ordering.

Measure desk fit, reach and clearance

  • Measure desk thickness at the intended clamp location, including any lip or trim that could interfere.
  • Check the arm’s reach against your seated speaking position, monitor and keyboard. Confirm it can move into speaking position and out of your way.
  • For XLR microphones, check connector clearance and the cable’s path through the arm. Internal cable channels can help, but do not assume every cable or connector will fit.
  • Check that the mic can be positioned without hitting the monitor, wall, shelves or other equipment.

Compare these microphone stand options

The models below illustrate different fits rather than a universal ranking. Their specifications are from the manufacturers’ product information and can change; confirm the current listing and included hardware before purchase.

Model Style and reach Load specification Mounting and clearance Best fit to consider
Elgato Wave Mic Arm Desk clamp; 780 mm / 30.7 in horizontal reach, 750 mm / 29.5 in vertical reach; 360-degree rotation 250–1,000 g for microphone and accessories Clamp expands to 60 mm / 2.4 in; supports 1/4-, 3/8- and 5/8-inch microphone mounts; integrated cable channels A desk setup needing extended reach and adjustable positioning, if the complete assembly falls within the stated load range.
RØDE PSA1 Desk insert and clamp; reach not stated in the cited product information 700 g to 1.1 kg for microphone plus shock mount or clip Internal springs; check the mount thread and included adapter against your setup. A clamp-arm option when the mounted assembly is within its published weight range.
Shure by Gator SH-BROADCAST1 Desk clamp; up to 940 mm / 32.25 in extension, as listed by Shure Not stated in the cited Shure product information For desks up to 55 mm / 2.17 in thick. Shure lists the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+ and MV7X as compatible via the threaded extension adapter, which provides XLR cable clearance. Microphone sold separately. Worth checking for the named Shure microphones, especially where XLR clearance matters; verify the complete assembly’s load suitability.
Elgato Wave Desk Stand Weighted base; 216 mm / 8.5 in horizontal reach and 411 mm / 16.2 in vertical reach Maximum load 1 kg / 2.2 lb Includes 3/8- and 5/8-inch adapters for its 1/4-inch thread; no desk clamp A no-clamp choice when its shorter reach and desktop footprint work for your setup.
RØDE DS3 Weighted-base desktop studio arm; 360-degree ball head Supports devices up to 1.5 kg 3/8-, 1/4- and 5/8-inch mounting compatibility; cable management A desktop-base option with a higher stated maximum load than the other listed desktop stand; check placement and thread fit.

How to narrow the options

  • Need the mic to swing in and away? Start with a desk-clamp arm whose reach clears your monitor and whose clamp fits your desk.
  • Cannot clamp to the desk? Look at weighted-base models, and make sure there is enough clear desk space for the base.
  • Using an SM7B or another named Shure mic? Check the Shure/Gator arm’s adapter and XLR clearance, then separately confirm load suitability for the complete assembly.
  • Using a heavier mic or accessories? Compare total mounted weight with the manufacturer’s stated limit or range; do not choose based only on the microphone model name.

Set up the stand for streaming

  1. Choose the position: Sit as you normally stream and identify where the microphone should be relative to your mouth, monitor and keyboard.
  2. Fit the base or clamp: For a clamp, use a flat section of desk within its stated thickness limit and tighten it securely. For a weighted-base stand, place the base on a stable, level surface.
  3. Attach the mic and any required adapter: Confirm the thread engages properly and the complete mounted weight is within the manufacturer’s stated range or limit.
  4. Route the cable: Use the arm’s cable channels or clips without pinching the cable. For XLR, leave enough slack for movement and check that the connector clears the arm.
  5. Position and check movement: Bring the mic into speaking position, then move it through the range you expect to use. Ensure it clears nearby equipment and does not pull on the cable.

Troubleshooting common fit problems

The arm will not clamp securely

Check desk thickness against the stated clamp limit and inspect for a lip, bevel or obstruction at the clamp point. Move to a suitable flat edge if possible; do not force a clamp onto a surface outside its specified range.

The arm sags or will not hold position

Recheck the complete assembly weight, including the mount and accessories, against the model’s stated load range. Remove unnecessary accessories or choose a stand with a suitable published capacity. A load rating is not interchangeable across models.

The microphone thread does not fit

Identify the thread on both the microphone mount and stand, then check which adapter is included. Use a compatible adapter rather than forcing the parts together.

An XLR connector hits the arm

Check connector clearance and cable routing at the mic end. Reposition the arm or use the correct extension adapter where specified. Shure says its Gator arm’s threaded extension adapter provides XLR cable clearance for the named Shure models.

The stand blocks the screen or desk

Reassess reach and the microphone’s approach angle from your seated position. A clamp arm can move the mic off the desk when not in use; a weighted base may be more suitable if clamp placement is unavailable, but it will occupy desk space.
