A montage depends on precise timing and readable action, not on a software label. Before choosing, check whether an editor handles the controls and footage you actually use:
- Pacing: Can you trim precisely, keyframe changes, adjust speed, and build speed ramps? Can you line cuts up with music beats without losing control of the gameplay audio?
- Effects and graphics: Look for masking, tracking, animated text, and slow-motion options if your edits call for them. These are useful tools, not automatic improvements; they still need to serve the moment.

Final Cut Pro: an option for Mac-only creators

A reliable gaming-montage workflow
- Capture separately from editing. Recording software captures gameplay; an editor assembles the recording. Preserve the original files so you can return to them if an edit or export goes wrong.
- Organize and copy your recordings. Sort clips into folders or bins by session, game, or event, and keep a backup of the originals. A fast external SSD can be useful for working copies, but a particular drive or capacity is not mandatory; fit storage to your footage and computer.
- Select moments before adding effects. Mark the strongest plays, reactions, and transitions, then decide what story or rhythm connects them. This reduces time spent polishing clips that will not make the final cut.
- Build the cut around timing. Use trims and keyframes for pacing, speed changes for emphasis, and beat-synced cuts where the music supports the action. Add slow motion, masking, tracking, or animated text only when they clarify or emphasize a moment.
- Mix the audio sources deliberately. If game audio, microphone, chat, and music were captured separately, adjust each track independently. Listen for dialogue covered by music and abrupt level changes at cuts.
- Set the project and export for the destination. Choose landscape or vertical framing and a frame rate suited to the intended delivery and source footage. Reframe important action rather than assuming a vertical crop will preserve it automatically.
- Review the exported file. Watch the export from beginning to end, not just the timeline preview. Check for missed action, bad crops, unreadable text, audio clipping, and synchronization problems before publishing.
Performance and sync problems to check before switching editors
Choppy timeline playback
First test representative footage rather than a lightweight sample. Resolution, frame rate, codec, hardware decoding, CPU/GPU, RAM, storage speed, and timeline settings can all affect playback. If the original media is difficult to edit smoothly, use a proxy workflow if your editor supports one, then check the final export against the originals.
Audio drifts out of sync
Variable-frame-rate footage or recordings made from separate capture sources can cause sync trouble. Inspect the exported file. If sync remains unreliable, consider making a constant-frame-rate intermediate and editing from that, while preserving the original recordings.

A vertical edit cuts off the play
Reframe the action for the vertical canvas and inspect every crop. A centered crop can miss a player, HUD element, or action at the edge of a landscape recording.
The montage feels busy but unclear
Effects cannot substitute for selection and timing. Remove a speed change, transition, or graphic if it obscures the play or interrupts the rhythm. The software gives you controls; the edit’s footage, pacing, and sound determine whether they help.
