For prepared playlist files, use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at 48 kHz as a practical SDR default. That recommendation applies to the video files you upload—not the format or protocol used to send a live stream to YouTube. For live ingestion, choose an encoder and protocol YouTube supports, then match its codec, bitrate, keyframes, and audio settings to your resolution, frame rate, and connection.
First, separate playlist files from the live stream
An MP4 file is a container for prepared video and audio. A live encoder sends a separate stream to YouTube using an ingestion protocol such as RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. Choosing MP4 for your source files does not mean the livestream itself is sent as MP4.

Recommended settings for prepared playlist files
For a straightforward SDR playlist, prepare files using the following YouTube upload recommendations. These describe the uploaded media, not the live encoder’s outgoing settings.
- Container: MP4, with no edit lists and the moov atom at the beginning of the file (“Fast Start”).
- Video: H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, CABAC, and two consecutive B frames. Use a closed GOP with a GOP length of half the frame rate.
- Frame rate: Keep the same frame rate as the original recording.
- Audio: AAC-LC is a practical default; YouTube also lists Opus and Eclipsa Audio. Use a 48 kHz sample rate.
If the playlist consists of files in different formats, check that each one decodes and plays correctly in the software or service that will assemble and stream it. The upload recommendations alone do not establish what a particular playback or live-encoding setup can accept.

Choose the live-ingestion format separately
RTMP or RTMPS
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
For audio, YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. Its recommended audio bitrates are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Do not substitute the 48 kHz upload-file recommendation for the live-ingest guidance: the appropriate setting depends on which workflow and channel layout you are configuring.

HLS
YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. It supports H.264 and HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS requires TS segments lasting between one and four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Because video is sent in segments, HLS has higher latency. Use it when its protocol support or HDR requirements fit your setup—not simply because your source files are MP4.
Set a live bitrate that fits the stream and connection
There is no single live bitrate for every 24/7 playlist. YouTube’s recommendations vary by video codec, resolution, and frame rate. These examples are recommended ingestion bitrates, not guarantees of quality or universal settings:

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings table for the target codec, resolution, and frame rate; it also includes minimum bitrates. Then check that the encoder and connection can sustain the chosen settings.
Check bandwidth and test before relying on a continuous stream
A 24/7 stream needs a stable upload connection, not merely a speed-test peak. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health. Its network guidance says to keep 20% of upload capacity available beyond the primary stream, backup stream, and stream bitrate requirements. Account for all simultaneous upload traffic and any backup path when assessing available capacity.

- Confirm the full chain: verify that playlist playback, live encoding, audio, and the selected YouTube ingestion protocol work together.
- Run a test stream before launch: check that YouTube receives the expected resolution, frame rate, and audio, and review stream health. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor the connection during operation: a network disruption can break the stream. Keep sufficient upload headroom and plan how the encoder or backup path will respond if connectivity fails.
Common format and streaming problems
- The source is MP4, but YouTube or the encoder reports an unsupported live format: MP4 is the prepared-file container, not the live-ingestion protocol. Configure the encoder for a codec and protocol supported by the selected YouTube ingest path.
- The stream looks unstable or drops frames: confirm the bitrate matches the output resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check stable upload capacity and YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom.
- Keyframe or stream-health warnings appear: check that CBR is selected and the keyframe interval is two seconds, not longer than four seconds, for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Audio is missing or configured inconsistently: check the live audio codec and sample rate for the chosen protocol and channel layout. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its sample-rate guidance distinguishes 44.1 kHz stereo from 48 kHz 5.1.
- A playlist file has playback issues: check the upload-file encoding separately, including MP4 structure, frame rate, and the recommended audio settings. Correcting the live encoder cannot repair a malformed or incompatible source file.
