For a YouTube relay, start with RTMPS where your setup supports it, CBR output, and a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds). Set the encoder’s bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send, then confirm your upload can sustain it. NGINX RTMP relays the encoder output; it does not make unsuitable video settings compliant or guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
These are settings for the encoder producing the stream sent through NGINX—not magic NGINX directives. YouTube’s published guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but the encoder and your installed relay must support the codec you select.
- Transport: Use RTMPS for the upstream connection to YouTube when supported. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: Every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec: Choose a codec your sending encoder can produce and your workflow supports. The codec options in YouTube’s guidance are not a guarantee that every encoder or NGINX RTMP build accepts them.
H.264 bitrate examples
YouTube’s current published H.264 recommendations below are tied to the listed resolution and frame rate. They are platform guidance, not guaranteed quality levels; choose a rate your upload connection can sustain reliably.
| Output | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations and minima for H.264—not universal targets for other codecs or settings. Test the available upload bitrate and favor a stable stream over a setting that intermittently exceeds the connection’s capacity. Leave headroom for normal network variation rather than assuming a speed-test peak is continuously available.

Audio and picture parameters
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1 surround, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Its advanced guidance also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Apply these only if the encoder exposes them and they suit your source and intended format.
What NGINX RTMP settings actually control
NGINX’s RTMP module handles the server-side RTMP workflow. The encoder determines the outgoing codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Changing an NGINX setting such as chunk size or enabling HLS does not, by itself, correct incompatible encoder output or fix every disconnect.

First establish which NGINX edition, package source, operating system, and RTMP module build you have. The module is not present in every installation by default, and installation instructions differ between NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source.
NGINX Plus
F5’s NGINX Plus RTMP guide describes installing the nginx-plus-module-rtmp package, loading ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, testing the configuration with nginx -t, and reloading with nginx -s reload. These instructions apply to the documented NGINX Plus context; verify package and module compatibility for your installation before using them.

NGINX Open Source
For NGINX Open Source, the installation guide explains that third-party modules may be compiled statically with --add-module or dynamically with --add-dynamic-module, where supported. The exact build procedure depends on your NGINX version, platform, and module source. Do not assume the NGINX Plus package command applies to an Open Source build.
When HLS directives matter
HLS fragment length, playlist length, playlist type, and output path matter if your server also packages an HLS output. They are not prerequisites merely because the destination is YouTube Live. The community-maintained nginx-rtmp directives reference describes these options; check it against the exact module version you run.

Bring up and validate the relay
- Confirm the module and build. Identify NGINX edition, version, platform, and whether the RTMP module is installed and loadable before adding RTMP configuration.
- Set the encoder output. Choose RTMPS to YouTube where supported, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a codec/bitrate combination appropriate to your actual resolution and frame rate.
- Check upload capacity. Test the sending connection and select a bitrate it can sustain with margin. The table above is specific to YouTube’s H.264 guidance.
- Validate configuration before applying it. For the documented NGINX Plus workflow, run
nginx -tbeforenginx -s reload. On other installations, use the compatible configuration-test and reload process for that build. - Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check the stream health messages rather than assuming a successful NGINX reload proves the feed is healthy.
- Monitor after launch. Watch YouTube’s stream health and investigate warnings or interruptions. Plan how your deployment will recover from encoder, network, server, or ingest failures; exact retry and failover behavior depends on the NGINX RTMP and encoder versions and configuration.
24/7 reliability: what settings cannot promise
No single NGINX configuration guarantees continuous service. The available official guidance provides encoder parameters and recommends testing and monitoring, but it does not establish a universal reconnect recipe, capacity plan, network redundancy design, or uptime level for a 24/7 NGINX relay. Treat recovery as an operational design problem: test failure scenarios, know which component stopped, and verify that the stream resumes correctly instead of relying on an assumed generic retry directive.
- If YouTube reports poor stream health, compare the actual outgoing bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and resolution against the encoder settings and connection capacity.
- If NGINX rejects the configuration or cannot load the module, check that the module matches the installed edition/build and that it is loaded in the correct context.
- If local HLS output is not needed, omit HLS-specific configuration rather than treating it as a requirement for YouTube ingest.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without maintaining your own always-on NGINX server and computer, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. Start the free first day.
