There is no single best Nintendo Switch 2 controller for everyone. Choose the official Switch 2 Pro Controller for a straightforward full-size pad, the 8BitDo Pro 3 if customization matters most, or the licensed Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless if its feature mix suits you. You may not need to buy anything: Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller works wirelessly, though its HOME button cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. For retro or handheld play, layout and physical fit matter more than a long feature list.
Which Switch 2 controller fits your budget and play style?
| Controller | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Players who want a conventional, full-size controller for docked play and Nintendo features. | Check your region’s current price; it is the official premium option. |
| 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad | Players who value customization, motion controls and extra controls. | Its shake-to-wake feature is specified for Switch 1 only; confirm connection and feature behavior in the current manual. |
| Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless | Players looking for a licensed wireless alternative with rear-button mapping and motion controls. | It has no rumble; up to 40 hours is a published battery-life specification, not an independent test. |
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 | Players considering a feature-rich third-party alternative. | GamesRadar+’s review says setup on Switch 2 is convoluted and the controller cannot wake the console. Its review-page MSRP was $59.99 / £69; current price and regional availability may differ. |
| Existing Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Owners who want to reuse a wireless controller rather than buy another. | Its HOME button cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. |
| GameCube controller with Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter | Players who prefer the GameCube layout for compatible games. | The adapter works in TV mode through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock; its layout is not a general-purpose fit for every game. |
These options are not direct equivalents: some are full-size docked pads, one is an older controller you may already own, and the GameCube option requires an adapter. For a lower-cost purchase, look for a model explicitly listed as Switch 2-compatible and check whether it is wired or wireless and which features it leaves out. The sources here do not establish a single current cheapest model or live prices across regions.
What features should you compare before buying?
Start with how and where you play, then check the features that affect that use. A controller can be compatible without matching the official pad’s wake behavior or feature set.
- Form and comfort: Decide between a full-size controller for docked play and an attached handheld grip. For handheld use, physical fit, grip shape and access to the controls matter more than a dock-focused feature list.
- Connection and waking: Confirm wired or wireless operation and whether the specific controller can wake Switch 2 from sleep. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says the original Switch Pro Controller connects wirelessly, but its HOME button cannot exit Switch 2 sleep.
- Motion, rumble and NFC: Check which of these features you need. Nintendo Life reports motion controls, HD rumble and amiibo scanning for the Switch 2 Pro Controller. The Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless has gyro but no rumble.
- Extra controls and customization: Rear buttons can be useful if you want additional inputs, but confirm whether they can be mapped as you want and whether software configuration is supported.
- Battery and platform: For wireless controllers, look at the maker’s stated battery figure and supported platforms. Treat published battery life as a specification, not a guarantee of your play time.
- Game compatibility: Nintendo qualifies accessory use by compatible games in relevant listings. Check the individual game’s controller support, especially before choosing an unusual layout.
Best official choice for traditional docked play
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The official Pro Controller is the simplest fit if you want a familiar, full-size pad for TV play. Nintendo Life reports that it includes motion controls, HD rumble, amiibo scanning and remappable rear buttons. Those features make it the clearest all-around official candidate in this group, but whether they justify its price depends on how often you will use them. Check Nintendo’s store for your region’s current price rather than relying on an assumed universal price.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Best sourced pick for customization
8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad
8BitDo lists the Pro 3 as compatible with Switch 2. Its feature set includes TMR joysticks, extra bumpers, rear paddles, Hall Effect triggers, motion control for Switch and Steam, and software customization. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison lists approximate battery life of 20 hours and weight of 8.5 oz (242 g); those are guide-reported specifications, not results from testing for this article.
One important distinction: 8BitDo marks shake-to-wake for Switch 1 only. Do not assume the Pro 3 can wake Switch 2; check the current manual for connection steps and which features work on the console.

Best licensed alternative if you do not need rumble
Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless
Nintendo Life’s 2026 guide describes the licensed Rematch Wireless as having TMR sticks, gyro and mappable rear buttons, with up to 40 hours of battery life stated in the guide. That maximum is a published specification relayed by the guide, not independently tested battery life. The key omission is rumble, so it is a poor match if vibration feedback is important to you.
Is the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 worth considering?
GamesRadar+’s review provides a useful caution for buyers weighing a feature-rich alternative: its reviewer found Switch 2 setup convoluted and said the controller cannot wake the console. The review quoted a $59.99 / £69 MSRP, but that is not a live price and may not reflect current retail costs or your region. Consider it only after comparing its setup and wake limitations with your needs.

Can you reuse a controller from the original Switch?
Original Switch Pro Controller
Nintendo says the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2 and can be charged through the dock with a USB cable. Its HOME button cannot wake the console from sleep, so you may need to use the console’s power button or another method to resume play.
Original Joy-Con
Nintendo says original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly, but several accessories made for them—including grips, wheels, straps and charging accessories—do not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo also documents specific game-related exceptions involving legacy Joy-Con with Ring-Con or a leg strap. Confirm support for the game and accessory combination you intend to use.

When a GameCube controller makes sense
If you prefer the GameCube layout or are playing a game designed around it, Nintendo’s GameCube Controller Adapter is supported on Switch 2 in TV mode through a USB port on the dock. It is a specific solution, not a default replacement for a modern pad: check that the game supports the controller and that its button layout suits the actions you need.
What to choose for handheld play
A full-size wireless pad does not solve the problem of Joy-Con comfort when playing in handheld mode. Look for a grip or controller that attaches around the console and assess its physical fit, grip shape and portability. Tom’s Guide discusses the GameSir G8 Plus as a mobile controller wide enough to fit around the Switch 2 screen, but this is editorial guidance rather than manufacturer documentation. Check dimensions, compatibility with your exact model and whether your case still fits before buying.
Best Value

How to make the final choice
- Decide where you play: Choose a full-size pad for docked play, an attached grip for handheld comfort, or a GameCube layout for compatible retro-style play.
- Check whether you already own a workable option: The original Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly, but its HOME button cannot wake Switch 2.
- Pick the features you will actually use: Compare rumble, motion, amiibo/NFC, rear controls and customization instead of paying for a long list of features you will not need.
- Verify the details that vary: Check current local price, stock, the exact model and manual, game support, connection steps and wake behavior.
