Start with a compatible Joy-Con setup in TV Mode, calibrate motion controls through the console if input seems off, and use the game’s limited sport-specific options where available. The steps below distinguish actual settings from practice tips; they do not imply that motion can be removed from every sport.
Set up compatible controllers and TV Mode first
Nintendo Switch Sports requires supported Joy-Con controllers, with the configuration varying by sport. Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode and recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Check the Joy-Con instructions shown for the sport you plan to play before troubleshooting motion input. Nintendo’s compatibility and troubleshooting FAQ lists the supported configurations and mode-specific details.

Which motion and accessibility settings are available?
Golf Shot Assist
To turn on the documented in-game assist, open Options → User Settings → Other and select Shot Assist. Nintendo introduced the feature to make Golf easier for beginners. It applies in Play Locally and Play with Friends; when you play Play Globally, the setting reverts to Normal. These mode restrictions are recorded in Nintendo’s July 9, 2024 update notes.
Button mapping and vibration
The console has system-level controls for button mapping and controller vibration under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors. These options are separate from Nintendo Switch Sports’ own settings. Nintendo’s overview does not establish that button remapping replaces the game’s motion gestures or makes every action playable without motion input. See Nintendo’s controller settings overview.

There is no documented general motion-free mode
The reviewed Nintendo support information does not document a general way to play Nintendo Switch Sports without motion controls. The game requires supported Joy-Con controllers, but that alone does not establish that every sport mechanic uses motion exclusively. Do not treat button mapping, vibration control, or Golf Shot Assist as a whole-game motion-off setting.
Calibrate motion controls when input seems wrong
If your character is not performing the expected action when you move a Joy-Con, calibrate the motion controls from the console settings. Nintendo’s instructions are for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED systems.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
- Install the latest system update. Nintendo’s calibration instructions ask you to check that the console is up to date.
- Remove straps and other accessories from the controller before calibration.
- On the console, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls.
- When prompted, hold the controller’s + or − button.
- Place the controller on a flat, stable surface with its stick facing upward, and follow the on-screen instructions.
See Nintendo’s motion-control calibration instructions for the full procedure.
If the issue involves Soccer Leg-Strap Mode
Check that the strap is attached properly and that you are using a compatible controller. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Nintendo Switch Leg Strap. If the game shows a repeated connection-unstable warning, Nintendo says wireless interference may be involved and points players to its connection troubleshooting guidance; the warning alone does not establish that the controller is faulty.

Enable Soccer Leg-Strap Mode using the right menu path
Leg-Strap Mode is an optional Soccer input method, not a general accessibility accommodation. The menu path depends on how you are playing:
- Play Globally: Highlight Soccer and press X.
- Play Locally or Play with Friends: Press + on the Joy-Con instruction screen.
The mode requires the Nintendo Switch Leg Strap and a compatible Joy-Con; Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot be used with the strap. Nintendo’s FAQ covers the menu paths, compatibility, and strap troubleshooting.

Use practice tips as technique, not settings
Nintendo recommends trying CPU opponents through Play Locally for practice. Its sport-specific tips are about timing rather than configuration: in Tennis, contacting the ball at its highest point can produce a faster serve; in Volleyball, jump shortly before your teammate sets the ball to time a quicker spike. These suggestions appear in Nintendo’s June 3, 2022 tips article.
