There is no OBS preset validated specifically for ASMR; test every change against your quietest whispers, breaths, and taps.
Choose filters for the sound you need to fix
OBS filters address different problems. They cannot compensate for poor mic placement, a noisy room, or distortion already recorded into the source. Make one change at a time and listen to the result before adding another.

Build and audition a gentle filter chain
- Improve the unfiltered signal first. Position the microphone and reduce room or computer noise where possible. Listen to the input with filters off; if it is already clean, leave it alone.
- Add Noise Suppression only if steady noise is audible. Compare the available method and settings while listening to soft material, not just speech at normal volume. Back off if whispers, breath detail, or taps sound smeared or artificial. OBS describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; Speex is configurable. NVIDIA Noise Removal has the additional SDK requirement noted above.
- Use a Compressor only if level variation needs control. OBS places a compressor typically at or near the beginning of the chain. Its documented default threshold of -18 dB and ratio of 10:1 are software defaults, not ASMR recommendations. Adjust while monitoring the quietest and loudest parts, and listen for raised noise or flattened dynamics.
- Try an Expander for residual low-level noise. OBS recommends RMS detection and gives 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release as starting ranges in its guide, not as a tested ASMR preset. Start gently: a high threshold can suppress wanted whispers and breaths.
- Use a Noise Gate only when a hard cutoff is appropriate. Set the close threshold above the background noise and the open threshold slightly below the wanted voice level, then test quietly. OBS lists -32 dB close and -26 dB open as defaults; do not treat those values as universal targets. Confirm that the gate does not clip the start or tail of soft sounds.
- Put the Limiter last. OBS lists -6 dB as its default threshold, not a required stream target. It can limit later peaks but cannot undo clipping or distortion earlier in the signal path.
- Adjust Gain only to set input level. Monitor levels as you adjust; raising gain also raises captured noise.
A practical audition order is clean input, optional conservative suppression, compressor only if needed, gentle Expander if low-level noise remains, then Limiter. OBS’s ordering advice places a Compressor near the beginning, an Expander after compression and other effects, and the Limiter last. Treat the chain as a workflow to test rather than a fixed recipe.

Expander or Noise Gate for quiet ASMR?
An Expander has an adjustable ratio and produces a more gradual reduction; a Noise Gate is designed to cut background sound when the mic is inactive. For material that depends on quiet details, audition an Expander first if low-level noise needs reducing. A Gate may suit pauses between sounds, but only keep it if it leaves whispers, breathing, and tails intact. This is an application of OBS’s filter descriptions, not an official ASMR-specific recommendation.
Test the stream in YouTube before relying on it
OBS filter choices affect audio processing, not continuous-operation reliability. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, previewing the feed in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality during broadcast. Those steps do not certify that an OBS setup will stay live for 24 hours or longer. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming tips and encoder guidance for the stream configuration; YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. If you keep a local archive, check that the file is intact and continues to grow.

Check music rights before going live
YouTube requires streamers to have the necessary rights for content they broadcast, including music. Its live system scans for third-party content; a match can trigger a warning, placeholder image, interruption, or termination. YouTube says Creator Music tracks offered for licensing or revenue sharing cannot be used in live streams. Consider original music, tracks from the YouTube Audio Library, or third-party music whose terms explicitly allow your intended live use. A track described as “free” is not, by itself, proof that you have those rights. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and copyright guidance.
Troubleshoot common ASMR filter problems
- Whispers or breaths disappear: Lower the Expander or Gate threshold, reduce the amount of suppression, or remove the filter. Re-test at the quietest intended level.
- Audio sounds watery or metallic: Reduce or disable Noise Suppression. OBS warns that suppression can distort other sounds; check whether the room noise is too loud for the filter to handle effectively.
- Noise swells between sounds: Listen for Compressor output gain raising the noise floor. Revisit compression and gain before adding stronger suppression.
- Soft sounds start or end abruptly: Ease the Gate thresholds or switch to a gentler Expander, then audition each sound’s full attack and decay.
- Peaks still sound distorted: Check the source for clipping before the Limiter. A final ceiling cannot fix distortion already in the recording.
- Stream audio differs from the local preview: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the configured encoder audio format and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Music triggers a live warning: Stop or replace the affected material and verify the license explicitly permits livestream use. Do not assume a “free” label or a Creator Music license allows live streaming.
