For a typical 16:9 loop, start with a 1920×1080 OBS output at 30 fps if the source, computer and sustained upload can handle it reliably. Match the output to the source’s useful detail; don’t upscale a lower-resolution video just to select a larger number. In OBS, the canvas is your layout workspace, while the output resolution is the size sent to YouTube.
Canvas vs. output resolution: what each setting controls
Base (Canvas) Resolution
The canvas is the space where OBS arranges sources. For a loop, choose a canvas that suits the intended composition and preserves the source’s aspect ratio. Changing it may require repositioning or resizing sources. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Output (Scaled) Resolution
The output is the resolution OBS sends to the stream after applying its downscale filter. For example, a 1920×1080 canvas with a 1280×720 output is scaled down to 720p. Sending a lower-resolution source at a higher output size does not create its missing detail.
How to choose a resolution and frame rate
- Check the loop file. Note its native resolution, aspect ratio and motion. Avoid stretching; fit the source to the canvas or crop deliberately.
- Start with the composition. For ordinary landscape video, use a 16:9 canvas and output. YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for its computer player; see its recommended upload encoding settings.
- Try 1080p30 when it fits. If the source is 1080p or higher and the computer and connection are dependable, use 1920×1080 output at 30 fps as a starting point. For less detailed source footage, choose a matching or lower output instead.
- Use 60 fps only for a reason. It can better represent motion, but OBS notes that streaming at 60 fps can be substantially more demanding than at 30 fps. Static or slow loops usually have little to gain from the extra frame rate. Test your system before relying on it.
- Reduce load if the stream struggles. If encoding is overloaded or YouTube reports degraded stream health, lower the output resolution and/or frame rate, then test again. A resolution that stays reliable is more useful than a higher setting that drops frames or disconnects.
There is no universal best setting for every loop. Compare source detail, motion, sustained encoder load, stable upload bandwidth with headroom, and whether the intended presentation is landscape, square or vertical. Don’t select 1440p simply because the number is larger: without suitable source detail and enough system and network capacity, that choice is not justified.

Set the YouTube ingest settings to match
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, checked 2026-10-03, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, allows up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS. Its bitrate figures below are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will be stable:
| Codec | Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p30 or 720p60 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use these as starting points for the chosen codec and resolution, leaving upload headroom rather than treating the recommended bitrate as a substitute for a stable connection. YouTube transcodes live feeds into different formats for viewers. For SDR, its guidance calls for Rec. 709, square pixels and progressive scan.

Test before leaving a loop live
- Run a representative portion of the loop, including its busiest motion and audio.
- Check OBS for encoding or rendering overload and check YouTube’s stream health while the broadcast is running.
- Confirm the preview looks and sounds right; adjust output, frame rate or bitrate if the connection or encoder is struggling.
- If a replay matters, record locally and confirm the resulting file is intact and continues to grow. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend testing, monitoring quality and checking local archive files. They also say the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days.
Will YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Don’t rely on one continuous 24-hour broadcast becoming a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours long and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an on-demand copy, keep a local recording and plan an archive approach around that limit. YouTube does not state that a particular restart cadence is required to keep the live feed online. Details are in its archive live streams guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The picture looks stretched. The source and canvas may have different aspect ratios. Preserve the source ratio and fit or crop it intentionally instead of stretching.
- The stream drops frames or looks unstable. The output, frame rate or bitrate may exceed what the computer or connection can sustain. Lower resolution and/or frame rate, leave upload headroom, and test again.
- Encoding overload appears at 60 fps. Return to 30 fps unless the loop’s motion clearly benefits from 60 fps and the computer can maintain it over time.
- The picture looks no sharper at a higher output. A larger output cannot restore detail absent from the source. Use a resolution appropriate to the actual file.
- The 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use a local recording if retaining the full replay is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
