There is no single OBS log setting that identifies every overnight YouTube stream failure. Start with the log from the failed session, distinguish network dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag, and compare OBS’s timestamps with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Change settings only when the evidence points to a likely cause.
Which OBS log should you use?
Use the log for the session that failed—not just any recent log. In OBS Studio, open Help → Log Files → Upload Last Log File after the session ends. OBS uploads the log and provides a URL you can use with its Log Analyzer. The analyzer asks you to upload or provide the log URL. Check that the log’s timestamps include the period when the stream stopped; a log that ends before the interruption cannot explain it. While a session is still active, OBS also provides options to upload or view the current log.
The OBS Log Analyzer reviews logs for common configuration, network, and other diagnostic issues and suggests areas to investigate. Treat a flagged item as a lead, not proof that it caused the overnight failure.
Read the counters as separate clues
OBS tracks three different kinds of frame loss. They point toward different parts of the streaming setup, so do not treat them as interchangeable or assume that lowering bitrate fixes all three.

OBS describes an increasing dropped-frames counter with a yellow or red connection indicator as a sign that the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its connection guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That is a reason to investigate the connection path when this specific symptom appears—not a reason to dismiss rendering or encoding evidence.
Compare OBS with YouTube Live Control Room
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review the stream’s health messages and errors around the interruption. Compare them with the OBS log using four clues:

- Timestamps: Find the entries immediately before, during, and after the interruption in both places.
- OBS network evidence: Note the dropped-frame percentage and whether the connection indicator changed.
- Local performance evidence: Check for rendering-lag or encoding-lag entries and any matching changes in OBS Stats.
- YouTube messages: See whether Live Control Room reports a corresponding stream-health or ingest error.
Matching times can help narrow the problem to OBS’s local workload, the connection path, or YouTube ingest. A YouTube error alone does not establish what happened on the computer, and a log without the failure interval cannot establish what happened at the platform.
If the log points to network instability
Use the network branch only when the dropped-frame counter, connection indicator, or related log entries support it. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests trying a different server or ingest option, lowering the video bitrate, or testing a different streaming service to help distinguish a service-specific route from a broader connection problem.

Check stable upload capacity before changing bitrate
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate heuristic, not a guarantee. Base any setting on stable upload capacity, not a momentary speed-test peak, and stay within YouTube’s current bitrate limits. If your bitrate is near the connection’s practical capacity, reducing it can leave more headroom; it will not repair an unstable link by itself.
Check the connection path
- If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable; a wired connection is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Consider whether VPN or security software, network-optimization utilities, an outdated network driver, or modem/router connectivity could be interfering.
- If available for your platform and OBS version, Windows network-optimization and TCP pacing controls may be relevant to the connection issue.
Dynamic bitrate adjustment may be a fallback where available, but OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality. Availability and menu names can vary by operating system and OBS version.

If the log points to rendering or encoding lag
Do not lower bitrate as a reflex when OBS reports frames missed due to rendering lag or frames skipped due to encoding lag. Those labels describe local workload or encoder-capacity symptoms, not network dropped frames. Review the associated log entries, encoder details, and OBS Stats around the failure to focus troubleshooting on rendering or encoding. There is no universal encoder preset, resolution, or frame-rate change supported for an unspecified computer; the log and system details determine what is sensible to test.
Common misdiagnoses to avoid
- Uploading the wrong log: The last log may not include the failed session. Confirm its timestamps before using the analyzer.
- Treating every frame counter as a network problem: Rendering lag and encoding lag are distinct from network dropped frames and need different investigation.
- Assuming the analyzer proves causation: Its findings are diagnostic suggestions; verify them against the log timeline and YouTube’s health messages.
- Changing several settings at once: If the evidence supports a change, test it in a controlled way so you can tell whether it addressed the observed symptom.
- Using dynamic bitrate as a permanent cure: It may reduce quality and does not fix the root connection issue.
