Best OBS Resolution and Frame Rate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mostly static or slow-moving 24/7 YouTube stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters—such as fast gameplay—and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it reliably. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Those are encoder bitrate recommendations, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds.

Choose resolution and frame rate for the content

Higher resolution and frame rate are not automatically better for a continuous broadcast. They increase the amount of data your encoder must send, and 60 fps needs more encoding capacity than 30 fps. For a stream that must remain stable, choose the highest setting your actual setup can sustain—not the largest number available in OBS.

When 30 fps is the better fit

Use 30 fps for mostly static visuals, slides, ambient scenes, artwork, or slow-moving footage. It is a reasonable starting point for a 24/7 stream because it avoids spending bandwidth and encoding capacity on extra frames that may add little to the viewing experience.

When 60 fps is worth it

Use 60 fps when the picture contains motion that benefits from smoother movement, such as fast gameplay. Test it with representative gameplay and audio; if the encoder struggles or the connection cannot sustain the output, reduce the frame rate or resolution.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Resolution choices

1080p is a practical starting point for many streams. Consider 720p if bandwidth or encoding capacity is constrained, and consider 1440p or 2160p only if your source, encoder, and upload connection can reliably sustain the associated bitrate. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so the incoming resolution is not the only playback format viewers may receive. YouTube does not establish one resolution as a universal viewer preference.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates

The following figures are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates for H.264 live ingest. They are not minimum home upload speeds, guarantees of quality in a particular OBS setup, or universal values for other codecs.

YouTube lists different bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; do not apply the H.264 values to those codecs. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec and format you intend to use.

OBS and YouTube settings that matter

YouTube’s live ingest guidance applies to the output sent by your encoder. In OBS, configure the output resolution and frame rate to match the quality you selected, then make the encoder settings consistent with YouTube’s recommendations.

  • Ingest protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
  • Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest. The bitrate table above is for H.264 only.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: Set a 2-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame-rate ceiling: YouTube lists a maximum of 60 fps.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color for SDR. HDR uses different settings, so use the HDR guidance if you are producing HDR rather than copying SDR values.

For the current details and qualifications, see YouTube’s encoder settings page. OBS is a software encoder running on a computer; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal CPU, GPU, or memory requirement for OBS.

Set up and test a 24/7 OBS stream

  1. Choose a target. Select resolution and 30 or 60 fps based on the source material and the capacity of your encoder and connection. For mostly static or slow-moving content, begin with 1080p30; for motion-heavy content, test 1080p60 if your setup can sustain it.
  2. Configure OBS output. Set OBS to the chosen resolution and frame rate. In its streaming output settings, select an ingest-compatible codec and CBR; for H.264, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen format from the table above.
  3. Set keyframes and transport. Use a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS where available. Do not exceed YouTube’s 4-second keyframe maximum.
  4. Connect to YouTube. Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, and keep the key private. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder covers the platform workflow.
  5. Test before committing to a long broadcast. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. If the feed is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.
  6. Monitor the live stream. Watch stream health and encoder output rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy. Keep a local recording if you need an independent copy.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive caveat

YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on broadcasts longer than 12 hours. These are archive and playback limitations, not OBS resolution settings. If preserving the full broadcast matters, keep a local recording backup or use shorter broadcast segments. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot an unstable or poor-looking stream

  • Stream health reports connection trouble: The selected output may not be sustainable on the available connection. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then run another representative test. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are not upload-speed guarantees.
  • Motion looks choppy: Check whether the source itself is low frame rate or whether the encoder is struggling. Try 30 fps if 60 fps cannot be sustained; use 60 fps only when motion benefits and the setup handles it.
  • The image breaks up or loses detail during movement: Check the codec-specific bitrate recommendation and confirm the encoder is using CBR. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, reduce the output quality rather than forcing a higher setting.
  • Keyframes or ingest settings are rejected: Verify the keyframe interval is 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds, and confirm the selected codec and transport are supported by YouTube.
  • The stream runs but no complete archive appears: A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or shorter segments when archive retention is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is unattended playback of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or PC-based OBS production, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
